A consistent performer, but getting tired in its old age. It does not help that the new characters on the show have not shown the potential needed to be adequate successors to the unique characters who have been written out of the show. With this being the final season for the Abby character, it is losing yet another of its most interesting voices.

In recently re-watching the early seasons of NCIS, the most obvious change in this series is the loss of fun. This show used to be genuinely funny in spots. Quirky and comedic exchanges were regularly found in the dialogue. Their loss in contemporary scripts may have been a natural maturation of this show (with Gibbs suffering the loss of Kate, Jen. and Ziva, plus being blown up and otherwise mangled physically and emotionally), but the comedy is the luster this old warhorse is missing! Also missing from recent seasons are the generous sprinklings of special effects and tech found early on.

Would like to see the new generation of NCIS actors and writers return to its roots and regain the luster that is now missing in its old age.

While one would expect the Gibbs character to stay on at NCIS until they throw him out, it may be time for his character to move to more of a consulting role and start grooming his replacements. Gibbs would never become an assistant director - lacking any political correctness - however, he does need to build teams for the future.

Will continue watching, but do miss the unique and quirky characters, plots, and dialogue that was classic NCIS.
