How Marvel can produce content like this after such a stellar run is unfathomable. This is content that is more deserving of The CW. Low effort content for a low effort audience I guess.

But at the same time I can't tell you who is, therefore I give it a shot. The show is so much cringe and cliche I couldn't bring myself yet to finish the first episode. Kamala Kahn is simply not a great character, the actress kinda works, she definitely has charisma, but she can't turn a hero nobody asked for in an interesting person. To say something positive, I really really like the visual ideas! Maybe I'll try to watch it another day, for now I can't recommend it, at least not to adults. Rating wise it would be best if I could just choose a "not applicable". As a final thought, this gets me worried for "The Marvels" or whatever it will be called. Expand

Everything is sanitized and childish, but not like in a family friendly way but in a patronizing way. But the most unforgivable part is that it's just extremely boring. Things move really slow and then when things happen, it's not that exciting. The writers clearly focused on something other than plot. Gave it 2 instead of zero because there is excellent prop, costume and VFX that sadly is wasted on one of the worst written shows I've seen, and certainly the worst one marvel has ever put out. I'll watch anything that's good, from a horror flick to teen rom coms, as long as there is a good story with creative characters and a great plot and dilemma. Girl who finds bangle that gives her powers and then saves boy (whom was a luke warm character at best) is hard for me to find the appeal. This show is pretty boring, I watched 3 episodes and was kind of semi present for another 2 episodes after but at that point it had completely lost my interest.

This is probably the first bit of MCU content in 14 years that I won't bother finishing. It feels like I'm being battered over the head with religious education, I don't particularly care if you're Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish or whatever else I've no interest in a comic book show that seems more interested in virtue signaling than telling a good story.

It seems well made, the cinematography is good, and I can't fault the acting but the story and pacing is terrible.

On top of that the show has a Disney channel type feel to it where the humor seems like it was created in a boardroom as opposed to an actual comedian. The only thing the positive ratings seem to mention is that it’s very inclusive and gives something for young Pakistani people to see themselves in, but when that is made through replacing the macfuffin with a bangle and putting an ethnic theme over tired trends it rings hollow and annoying. I really enjoyed the character in the comics but the more she appears in other media the more tokenized she seems to become. Expand

Has nice Aesthetics, but so far, nothing happened. There is no antagonist so far, and no real problem. It is like a reality show where we follow a person who does normal stuff.

The Kamala actress is cool, though. I think they have an excellent director, but no script to work with… Well, let's see what will happen in the upcoming episodes. Will adjust my review accordingly if the plot develops to a more interesting and engaging story, as it has so far.

The rating of 4 is because the aesthetics of the show look charming, and the lead is likable, and apart from it being boring, nothing struck me as game breaking so far. We see.

Maybe it is made for kids and not so far for adults...

I applaud Marvel and Disney for promoting non-white, non-supermodel characters. When done well, it gives voice to those who have been underrepresented and expands the MCU in a great way. But unlike Black Panther and Spiderman Dimensions, Ms. Marvel feels sanitized and more than a bit phony.

There is much talk of the partition of India and Pakistan, colonialism, and of course, ordinary slights of Muslims by white males and law enforcement. The problem is these are complex issues in need of nuance, especially since few have any understanding of the partition. Instead, we get corporate woke speak.

She Hulk is much better though still dumbly woke. Note to Disney; characters are more interesting when they are not 100% good or bad. White males are portrayed as either incompetent bigots or woke allies. It implies a world view where there can be no legitimate disagreement on values; ironic given the central role Islam plays in Ms. Marvel. This is the anti-liberalism of the woke left.

An outsider home life featuring strong but kooky wamen, and contrived teenage problems which can be solved with a combination of Learning Lessons and just making up new superpowers as necessary.

But Sabrina had writing that was sweet, sly and subversive, with plenty of delightful little Easter eggs for parents as well as children, and there's precious little of that here. It's absolutely basic-witch exposition, conflict and resolution, with a modest effects budget that's splashed on jarring ADHD fireworks and a hyperactive score.

I'm sure it's fine FOR tweens and below, but Disney really should sort their marketing and stop pitching all their shows to all viewers. There's zero chance that I'd be interested in this. It's all ages-appropriate, but not all-ages appealing.

I mean, she is a girl conflicted by her desire to be a superheroine and the desire to make her strict parents happy, but it doesn't seems like the latter is really of any importance to her, i mean i get the rebellious stage, but she doesn't even get punished by her parents when she disobey, she doesn't feel guilty at all when she crushed her car in the drive test or when she sneaked away, so much that the next night she goes to a party! ...so i guess her parents are not really strict by only nagging her and that there are no real consequences for her behaviour...which is a bit unrealistic to me for the context they wanted to put her in. Also, i don't like her power, i liked the original one, and the origins of how she got them feels underwhelming... Expand

The “expert” reviews clearly only watched the first episode and are falling over themselves to signal their virtue in just LOVING any show that whispers “diversity”. It’s pathetic and the more we do this the more trash we can expect. Thanks “experts”.

The writing is bad and the character development is almost nonexistent. If Disney would focus on writing a good story instead of all the virtue signaling and woke nonsense I would bet this would be a hit. There are universal values regardless of religion or ethnicity that draws people to stories. That's overcoming hardships, learning to be better, but none of it involves being preachy and talking down to people. It's disrespectful to its own universe. It's disrespectful to the previous heroes, it's disrespectful to her own culture, it's disrespectful to the American culture. It's just plain not good. I don't think people care that she's Pakistani or Muslim or anything like that. I think people are tired of being preached to and spoken down to. I think people are ready for Disney to just put out good stories again. Not white stories not male dominated or white dominated or none of that trash because no one really cares about that anyways. I don't care what anyone says that's not what matters. What a missed opportunity. Expand

The target audience is very clear, reaching children and young people, but did they manage to do that? apparently not all young people are enjoying this.

I watched the 2 eps, and I didn't like the rework of Kamala Khan's powers, a bracelet, is this for real? Is she a Green Lantern now?

The origin of her powers comes from the ancestors. great-grandmother? why not do like the comics, make her an Inhuman, it's much more interesting.

At the same time, I can't tell you who it is, so I'll take a chance. I couldn't force myself to complete the first episode since it was so cringe-worthy and cliched. Kamala Kahn isn't a terrific character; the actress does a decent job, and she has a lot of charm, but she can't make an uninteresting hero exciting. To be positive, I think the graphic concepts are fantastic! I'll attempt to watch it again another day, but right now, I can't suggest it to grownups. It would be ideal if you didn't rate anything at all. Expand

With that said, this show has thus far let me down. Why in the love of God does Hollywood sometimes feel the need to try and reinvent the wheel?? Why does she not have her correct superpowers?? This, unfortunately ruins the show for me. Her personality? I will give credit where it's due here. They did a great job capturing and displaying her personality. Her awkwardness, her strong will and her heart are all on point. Her family is included beautifully I thought. These are really the only reasons why I will probably watch the next episode. But man I am so sick and tired of Hollywood always trying to reinvent the wheel. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first two episodes are truly bad. The actress who plays Kamala Khan seems likable but….isn’t? Due to poor writing she has to be charming while acting like an ass. This is a consistent problem with Disney princess arcs. They’re born perfect and the only impediment to the character is that no one realizes their perfection. It’s self involved. I think Kamala’s parents are right to worry about her being out late at night in New Jersey. Nope, they’re too controlling. I think her friend is right to feel snubbed when she cancels her training without telling him. Nope, he’s just jealous. I think it’s a terrible way to write heroes that little girls could look up to.
Pre Endgame every Marvel hero was on a journey of embracing self sacrifice - that’s a traditionally “boy hero trait” (Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Thor, etc.). There is no reason girl characters should be any different but that arc can’t happen when you’re just so obnoxiously awesome right off the bat. Give us a Wanda, not this trite nonsense.
The lack of any interesting development is back filled with the standard empowering (pandering) story beats. We will have a period discussion, why? Is that empowering? How? Peter Parker doesn’t discuss the web fluids he gains in puberty. Then there has to be a girl power moment at the mosque. Why? Who thinks a teenager is the best leader for a community organizations? Pretty much no one, because teenagers still need to grow up. The scene where a family friend is pressured to vote for her because of woman’s suffrage. Come on, really? Suffrage is not about teen girls being entitled to everything they decided they wanted yesterday. And for gods sake, correcting someone for saying your name wrong is not empowering. I have an uncommon name. If you say it wrong, and IF I even care, I’ll correct you. Then you can say it right next time. No one intentionally says your name wrong. Doesn’t happen. 99.% of the world doesn’t want to offend others and do their best not to. If you’re easily offended by things like people mispronouncing a name they don’t have much exposure to then you’re the impatient self absorbed one. Disney is not actually teaching girls to be good women, just how awesome they already are. What do you get out of that? Where do you grow? See Captain Marvels “arc” for the answer. Nowhere.
Just to touch a little more on the topic of religion, man is it unnecessary and half baked here. Disney wants religious diversity to show how noble they are. I can only think of Jesus being mentioned once in the entire MCU - as a Starlord joke. Was Iron Man Muslim / Christian / other? Does anyone care? How is mentioning only Islam at length diverse? And then to do it in this wannabe feminist way because Disney can’t really ignore that Islam, historically, hasn’t treated women great. How to maneuver this minefield? How about don’t. No one wants religion and religious activism in the MCU. No one. Seriously, Feige, poll your fans as they leave the theatre, you’re allowed. No one prefers the forced diversity of the new heroes. Ask them.
Anyways, we have another day 1 hero and we get our cringe filled post heroics swagger scenes as she walks into the high school. This is a hard underline of why the post Endgame MCU sucks. Think how different it is from Peter Parker refusing to show off his powers because it feels self serving and dumb. It is, and it makes Kamala unlikable and shallow when that’s her attitude. What even is the actual Marvel story here? Girls got bracelets from box, has training montage. All this ugly, pedantic, PC window dressing around that stupidly simple progression is pointless.
Kevin Feige, give us good heroes! You did it for a decade, how can you not know how all of a sudden? You’re becoming the new Lucas. I honestly don’t understand how you guys (Yourself, Spielberg, Lucas, The Wachowskis, etc. ) can’t see where you left the track. You had it! We all thought you understood, you don’t. There’s no shame in taking a step back and course correcting. I think the big realization that needs to dawn on all these creators is this - it was not just you. It was Favreau, the Russo brothers, great actors-and people who loved the characters more than the activism. You’ve lost them all and it shows, it’s time to clean house.

Kamala’s Mom is a boss though, nails the Indian mother. She’s so low key and perfect I worry people will miss how amazing she is here. Marvel, you want diversity? How about an older Indian female hero with a tragic back story who has selflessly been serving her family / community AND likes Bon Jovi? Give the Mom the bracelets, we have a better hero to grow with right there. I’d watch it. I won’t finish watching this garbage.

The main conflict may look high stakes especially for a young person but on later reflection the issue could've easily been discussed between the two parties. By the end of the first episode, it looks exactly like any other marvel movie, with the same broad stroke CGI. It is too soon to pass judgement on the main actress' portrayal as the first episode is barely a intro to the show. In the end, I had both hopes and fears for Ms marvel, such as giving a tv show to a character younger then the MCU itself but that was outweighed by the Asian inspired music and appearance I was looking forward to. I wish Disney had the guts to give Ms marvel as well as their other tv shows and movies a distinctive feel and appearance. I'm just disappointed. Expand

Ms. Marvel is a nuanced, sophisticated treatment of a rapidly growing segment of American life, the culturally rich Muslim diaspora. Iman Vellani is absolutely brilliant as the lead, a struggling teenager full of zest and life, trying to find her place in the world at the intersection of religion and culture, fandom and rebellion. The rest of the supporting cast is perfect, portraying the interplay of complex dynamics in any typical family. The fight and chase scenes are thrilling and do not seem made for TV. The mechanics of Kamala’s powers are interesting to watch, especially her primarily defensive posture and utilization. The production designs are excellent and immersive, typical of New York and Karachi, with no pretense. The soundtrack and costumes are amazing, spot on. As many have said, the sensitive and nuanced portrayal of the savage partition period is much appreciated - this entire period of history has often been shown as a simple blood bath, with little focus on the actual pain of individuals torn apart. There is plenty of setup for what follows in movies and TV, but it's not often we get a series dedicated to a relatable teenager growing up in a complex world. Expand

I understand that this one is likely aimed toward teenagers, but it honestly feels like a show for 10-year-olds. In most cases would be fine, but as a piece of an interconnected series of movies and is confirmed to be in the next Captain Marvel movie aiming it toward the general audience seems like a no-brainer to me. The character is uninteresting, undefined powers, and the show feels like a bad modern version of Freaks and Geeks. Now credit is due towards the style, I do enjoy the moving art and all of the visuals, the acting is fine, but the characters themselves especially the side characters like Bruno (had to look it up to even remember his name) are just really hard to connect with because they don't seem like believable people. I think the only time I felt emotion for a character is when I felt bad for Kamalas's father when he dressed up as The Hulk and was yelled at. The show has heart and good acting, but the problem is the marketing, the characters, and the tone. Expand

It's like god spilled a script and hastily put back the words in whatever order he thought would make sense. By far one of the weaker additions to the MCU. Not 'Thor 2' bad, but pretty close. I'd avoid this one unless you really, really wanna see a pakistani superhero. I was excited at first because I absolutely ADORED Moon Knight. I am enjoying the superheros of other cultures being introduced but they need to balance cultural exploration with the story of what we came to see.

The 2nd episode being 90% pakistani culture was a waste. It's interesting but I'm not watching an MCU movie to watch a wedding. One thing it did too positively though is illuminate the Partition. Was not aware that it was that bad. Definitely something I learned.

The common criticism of the Marvel shows is that they need more time than the 6 episode format allows, but I'd have been happy had this ended far sooner than Ep 6. It was really, really, boring. It was essentially a programme about Kamala and her family - if thats what interests you then fair play, but I had zero interest in it. Ultimately, nothing really happened - there were massive amounts of time spent on things which were totally inconsequential.

Apart from all that, the acting wasn't particularly good, and the CGI was pretty poor in parts.
