Just plain unfunny ... Space Force was by comparison a lot better. Not much more to say about it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'd give this season, likely the only one, about a 7 or 8. I laughed a lot, certain parts were a bit boring, but a lot if it was funny. I thought the last episode had a weak ending, but overall I enjoyed the concept of three idiots who believe they have what it takes to become astronauts. It has more heart than something like Space Force, for example. Expand

The series is hard to pin down. On one hand it's slow, and you are trained to want more from your shows. On the other hand you find yourself watching this and it's like a comfortable blanket. You get comfortable with it. You like it, but it's nothing groundbreaking. You watch the shows. It's ok. You can live with or without it, but you keep coming back for the next episode.

While this show has some big names involved it has the feel of a small scale production. It doesn't go for the big set-ups to tell a joke but relies on it's understated humour for chuckles.

Moonbase 8 worked best blending dry wit with moving character studies of three men who discovered that even on the Moon – or a fake moon in Arizona – there are some problems from which you cannot run. If only the one-liners functioned as effectively as the pathos.

In all, “Moonbase 8” is comforting, but disposable entertainment. While the finale surprisingly teases a larger world beyond the desert, the first season is an uncomplicated hang-out.

While “Moonbase 8” is often more relaxed than laugh-out-loud funny, it’s a step up from Netflix’s “Space Force,” which tried way too hard and wound up being seriously underwhelming.
