I don't have time to watch all the shows I'd like to, but I am able to catch some, and of course, I choose the ones I think look interesting. When I saw a season 2 of The Punisher was released, I decided to rewatch season 1 for the 3rd time and then go on to season 2. Well, once again I enjoyed season 1 immensely and saw things the 3rd time around I'd forgotten. If you like slam-bang action, and interesting characters with heroes and villains, in a show that never gets boring, and keeps in touch with reality (mostly) and isn't some weird fantasy piece, then this show is for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it all 3 times I watched it from episode 1-13. And now I look forward to season 2. I guess I'd already reviewed this once, (I'd forgotten, I'd forget my head if it wasn't attached), and given it a 9. Well, it's stood the test of time so I'm bumping it up to a 10. And the critics, well, they will gush over some artsy, boring movie and then turn up their noses at a show like The Punisher. I can appreciate any movie or show that is done well and interesting, but apparently, some critics can't. Whatever, life goes on. Expand

It's better than any cop show or detective CSI crap I've ever seen. Good writing, characters you care about, and an overall feel that passion went into this.

BTW The original critic score of 7.8 was more fair and accurate than the current 5.4. No way. It deserves better.

All around brilliant show. Honestly, It is in the same league with Breaking Bad, The Wire and Game of thrones. The writing, the acting, action sequences - everything is top notch. It might seem a bit stretched to some people, but I didn't feel bored for a second. It is beyond my comprehension why on Earth the critics tried to sink this masterpiece. Yet another proof you can't trust them at all.

The critics got this one wrong. This MCU adaptation surpasses Jessica Jones and Daredevil. The acting doesn't seem forced or inauthentic. Visually it looks great. And for someone unfamiliar with the story it really plays well.

After watching season 2 of Daredevil I was very excited to see the continuation of Jon Bernthals's portrayal of Frank Castle/Punisher, and he does not disappoint. Ben Barnes is also fantastic as Billy Russo.

A very entertaining and dramatic story that goes deep into the life and struggles of Frank with plenty of action along the way and a satisfying conclusion. Season 2 can't come quick enough.

There is a lot of character building in this show and unlike others like PMS Jones, the brain-dead Fist or Dumbdevil, the villains are much better written and acted. You genuinely dislike them by the time Frank gets his hands on them and he definitely punishes them in fairly satisfying ways.

If you are looking for mindless action and no story feel free to look up the other marvel (or DC) shows. They are all awful except maybe Luke Cage and season 1 of Gotham. The Punisher however was excellent and I hope they can continue at this level for season 2.

Critics are far too hard on this series. Yes it does take a couple of episode to get into and yes, the sheer of violence sometimes is to the point of ridiculous, but overall it is a strong show with a strong message of how war can affect an individual. My one complaint is Marvel TV tends to slow build a characters back story so much that sometimes the pay off isn't as good as it could be.

The series is unique with Punisher and Jessica Jones (and to a lesser extent Luke Cage)as they all were stories that don't need to even address they are about superheroes. They would stand up alone as stories without powers (much like this year's Logan).

Having grown up with Vietnam Vets (who were also outlaw MC members) I saw a lot of PTSD upfront and personal. There were nights of explosive violence, resulting in police, jail and hospital emergency rooms.

Other times I saw them drink themselves stupid, cry and break down.

Mostly I just saw them bury it all inside of themselves, causing them to lose jobs, significant others, and get in trouble with the police. They couldn't fit back into society, and society didn't want them.

That connection with the Punisher is what felt real for me. More so then a blind lawyer who fought criminals or much worse some punk rich douchebag filled with so much privilege that he whined about everything. Sure there was gratuitous violence, slow parts, all that. However, the story of a man trying to figure out how to get through after the things he has done was heart stopping for me.

Pros: Great acting, directing, blah blah blah. Most importantly something I could connect with from my life.

Cons: It did get a bit slow and bloated in the middle.

Sign me up for Season 2.

Jon Bernthal plays unhinged, unstoppable, can't-tell-if-they're-bad-or-good so well. The show really plays around with the Punisher as an anti-hero - he's somehow super likable but consistently brutal, cruel, and exacting. Jon Bernthal plays unhinged, unstoppable, can't-tell-if-they're-bad-or-good so well. The show really plays around with the Punisher as an anti-hero - he's somehow super likable but consistently brutal, cruel, and exacting. As a fan of The Punisher I really enjoyed this show, a lot; but it's not going to be for everyone - mostly because it's insanely violent.
The supporting cast was great - especially Micro who helps keep the show balanced, fun, and frequently light-hearted.

While the Punisher has easily been the best part of the MCU on Netflix universe IMO, it was always a question whether he could carry a feature length series on his own. However the story doesn't do him any favors, nor anyone else in the cast. With continuity holes throughout the entire show to the other Netflix shows, plus some extremely telegraphed tropes, it became SUPER obvious what would happen very early on in the show. That's not to take away from the performances of the surrounding cast here as it was prob some of the best I've seen from a show like this. The Punishers future is up in the air right now in regards to how he'll be handled from here on out. Jon Bernthal is still at his best when he's just being a super badass like he should be. They showed his character was not meant to carry a longer script however. He's best suited for a side role for another hero to bring out the best in them, like he was in Daredevil. That's how I hope they can utilize him in the future. Expand

So I missed The Defenders as I thought "Well the only characters solo show I actually enjoy is Daredevil, I am excited for The Punisher though."

So I saw that The Punisher was ready to be streamed and I thought "Why the hell not?". Straight away I fell in love with this show, after a few episodes I realised that this isn't the show most people are expecting, this isn't all blood, guts, guns and gore. This is more about the psychology of multiple characters that I loved instantly, each character blew me away with their story arcs. It is obvious this show had one of the lower budgets out of them all but it sure makes up for it in writing and imagination, and for me that's all that counts.

I saw many people whining on social media, they were all complaining how bored they all were, I found this strange as I was glued to the show and binging the whole thing. Yes there isn't much action but my lord when there is action it's hard hitting and gnarly! Towards the end I actually felt my emotions twist inside of me, I loved and hated the villain, I felt Castle's pain, I felt his anger, I felt his need to keep on going. I never thought a show about such a gruesome and violent character could have so much emotion and such good characters and story arcs. I think I have to admit I haven't enjoyed a show this much in a long time.

I truly hope Netflix continue to make another Punisher series as it has some good things ahead to it, hopefully it'll make my feelings as Puzzling (haha) as this wonderful piece of television did.

Frank Castle, you have taken the top spot in superhero television for me. Thank you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now, I have not read the Punisher comics. I do have some secondhand knowledge due to my brother reading some, and Matt from the Super Best Friend's Play YouTube channel talking about it. But most of my familiarity with The Punisher as a character comes from Daredevil Season 2. Now if you, like me, came into this hoping for the same kind of action in this series as in the 2nd season of Daredevil. You might be disappointed. You won't find Frank finding new and interesting ways to kill and torture criminals. Instead, it's another show that centers around "The Big Bad Government" and all the sh*t Frank Castle and his buddies did under orders back during the war. Because hey, they had to resolve Shoonover's foreshadowing sometime, right?

Anyway, the Punisher tries to tackle issues like military veterans returning from war, gun control and all that...but it just isn't terribly interesting. It's also not why I wanted to watch the show, but I guess they wanted to make The Punisher look like more than Frank Castle wanting to get his murderboner on. Which is fair. Aside from Frank Castle I gotta say I also liked most of the other characters that were introduced. The only one that was kinda dull to me was Dinah Madani, but that's because she could've been copy/pasted from any show with a "badass female cop who doesn't take sh*t from anyone".

For all my complaining about it, there certainly were some parts when the characters just talk that I enjoyed. Especially when Micro and Frank talk about their families or anything about Micro and his family comes up and Frank has to deal with it in some way for him. Which is why I don't mind much that Frank Castle isn't just the crazed vigilante he's sometimes portrayed as.

When he DOES decide to dole out "punishment" it's well done and fairly brutal. Unfortunately, it's a bit vague if this one season was also the FINAL season. Considering how Frank tries to make peace with everything he's seen and done with Curtis' veteran support group, while in the comics he always seems to live with the rage. While with Billy Ruso (now Jigsaw?) it is uncertain if he ever wakes up and, if he does, if he'll even remember everything.

Still, for all my b*tching (and oh boy, I b*tched a lot more than I realized) I did enjoy my time with the Punisher and would recommend it. I just hope that we get a second season of it and that it will be a bit more action packed if we do get that lucky.

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind...unless you use a silencer. Frank Castle returns in his own series thanks to Marvel's deep pockets. Bloody, dirty, and raw, this show gives comic vets and newcomers alike a glimpse into the mind of an elite soldier whose seemingly limitless arsenal runs perpendicular to his ability to connect with other people. This show is not for the faint of heart.

    The complaints for this show are no surprise to me and rather than antagonize those whom would harp on the smallest of issues I would like to applaud Marvel for a revamped but familiar take on "The Punisher" mythos that I feel effectively flung Frank Castle into the 2000's. The Story may have been slow at certain points and even a bit plot heavy but i understand why this was required. The first season of "The Punisher" to me played out like one of the Greek tragedies of old where the hero comes out on top but not unscathed;
    not whole.
Not one character in my opinion by the end of the season felt flat or lacking in their motivations minus the main protagonist William Rawlins. Frank Castle shined above all others, not depicted as an unrelenting force of righteous conviction, but a broken man left empty and haunted by loved ones he ultimately feels he himself led to a tragic death. Frank shows obvious signs of PTSD as well a few other neurological disorders that I'm sure I couldn't even pronounce, giving you a glimpse of the war Castle is fighting in his own mind; a war he is losing. Using the only skills at his disposal Frank works towards his families revenge all through out the season, a ride filled with twists and turns. Eventually we find out Franks true motivation behind his lust for bloody carnage and absolute justice which humanizes his black and white stance on crime and dealing with criminals without justifying it.
I for one loved the show and if you never had a chance to pick up a Punisher comic I urge you to watch this show. It works on many levels and is a familiar yet fresh introduction to the anti-hero known as The Punisher.

Marvel Netflix's best show. Even though it's gritty it never gets boring like it happens with cage or daredevil. It's fast paced and action packed. I think another key is the superior cast. Dark, violent, but also emotionally charged. This is not a bullet spraying gore-fest, this is a character study of a man battling his demons. The character of the Punisher was introduced to the Marvel TV universe in 2016, during Daredevil’s second season—following three live-action films that failed to make him popular with mainstream audiences in 1989, 2004, and 2008, respectively.

What made The Punisher so interesting in Netflix’s Daredevil was his antithetical nature to The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. While both characters had the same goal in mind - to rid Hell’s Kitchen of criminals - they had very different ways of going about it. As played by Jon Bernthal, Daredevil’s Punisher makes his intentions very clear from the start.

Initially, in Daredevil, when gangsters are first being murdered all over the city, he’s mistaken for a paramilitary organization with exceptional force, but it turns out that he’s just one man, with a lot of weapons and an extraordinarily deadly aim.

Punisher opens with Frank castle finishing of his “mission” from Daredevil after his beautiful wife and two innocent young children — gunned down when unexpectedly caught in the crossfire of a gang war in Central Park, shortly after he was discharged from serving in a mysterious black ops mission in Afghanistan—as a member of “Operation Cerebrus,” a group one soldier says has a reputation for being “the American Taliban.”

In response, Frank, himself a former decorated Marine, committed himself to a one-man war against all crime in New York City… but in particular, the three gangs involved in that fateful shootout: the Irish, the bikers, and the cartel.

The Punisher was a harbinger of a brutal era in comics, where heroes toting massive machine guns were suddenly the norm and the death’s-head logo emblazoned on his costume became a ubiquitous cultural symbol.

Punisher opens with Castle finishing his crusade and then burning his regalia, you could almost say the fire represented his rebirth back into Frank Castle as he leaves that life of the vengeful Punisher behind.

For Netflix, Frank Castle is that harbinger of death once again. Frank Castle, is the archetypal character of the retributive anti hero – one who makes his own rules and follows his own conscience – is a familiar figure in mass culture, appearing in film, television, video games, and comics. This character represents the frustrations of millions of people who feel powerless and who fantasize about striking back at their enemies, be they real or imagined.

With all of Marvel’s works the Punisher follows the strict formula that Marvel has in place. The same style and themes creeps into every Marvel movie can be found within the Marvel television shows. And while this works in terms of getting audience and making money, it’s becoming stale and it’s not innovative anymore.

The thing that has been lacking in both the Marvel cinematic universe and the Marvel televisions shows is the lack of an interesting villain. And that’s what's missing from the Punisher. What set Daredevil season one apart from subsequent shows was the dynamic that Vincent D'Onofrio brought as the Kingpin. That dynamic and power struggle was lacking when Daredevil and the Punisher faced off and is completely missing from the Punisher.

It seemed the show didn’t know who to put in the Punishers crosshairs in a meaningful way. Due to Marvel setting up his motivation as retribution for his family’s death, we see that by the guilt of Castle’s failure to protect the only thing that mattered to him, his family, he has no other motivation. Tying Castle’s past to a secret military programme as the enemy within this show made no sense until you realise that they had a hand in, you guessed it, covering up the real reasons why his family was killed.

Best show I've seen this year hands down. Would recommend to anybody that likes a no bs kind of show and doesn't tip toe around issues. Don't believe the critics. They get literally everything wrong. Lord knows how they even have jobs after rating every show so far off the mark.

The critics messed up on this one. Jon Bernthal is perfect as Frank Castle and almost all of the supporting characters are interesting and well acted. The show also handled the morality and brutality of what Frank was doing very well, not painting Frank as a true hero, but also showing what it's like when a man without Frank's honor tries to do what Frank does. What we got instead was a thought provoking exploration of PTSD, justice, and morality, all punctuated by brutal violence and rage. Well done, Marvel. Expand

Jon Bernthal's performance as the Punisher is by far the best that's been seen in non-print media, and every action, statement, and FACIAL EXPRESSION he makes screams "Frank Castle". The supporting cast not only seem more competent, but hold far more depth than characters in the other Marvel series, i.e. compare Agent Madani to Electra. Of course, if you never liked the Punisher in the first place, there's a fair chance that Netflix's adaptation will not only displease you, but also make you feel uncomfortable. Still, for what it is, not only do I think it's the best MCU show, it's also a fantastic rendition of the setting and themes of The Punisher. Expand

Hell yeah, Marvel is back. I was getting tired of comparing everything to Jessica Jones and finding it lacking. I might even give Daredevil S2 a shot now just because the Punisher's in it, and set aside for a moment the yawnfest of repetitive and meaningless fights that DD S1 was.

Couldn't be more surprised to hear that some of the complaints are to the effect that this wasn't

For a gory show centered on a brutal male character with an army background, I was surprised at how many hints of multiculturalism, anti-gun and anti-war rhetoric they managed to squeeze in. You just have to take it for what it is and pay some attention at what's really in there.

It was pretty much unanimous last year that the highlight of Daredevil's second season was Jon Bernthal's top-notch portrayal of the classic anti-hero "The Punisher." Turns out Marvel and Netflix were just as big of fans as we were, as they started developing this spin-off before the character's introduction to the MCU was even released. For those hoping to see a continuation of Bernthal's excellent work as Frank Castle, know that he doesn't leave you disappointed. His performance is absolutely incredible. The show itself is very faithful to the character and his stories. Any comic book fan will feel right at home. Just know going into this that there are some pacing issues to contend with.

There's a lot of what feels like downtime in the plot. The show drags it's feet in it's middle episodes and I can't help but wonder if it would have been better off condensed to a shorter running time. I was certainly never bored while watching The Punisher, in fact this is the fastest I've made it through one of these Marvel/Netflix shows due to how gripping and addictive I found it to be, but it was very clear that a lot of what I was watching was filler. Certain subplots feel unnecessary and there's a lot of waiting around for the next significant plot piece to show up. It all ties in together nicely though, and this is certainly good filler. The show uses it's slower moments to build on Frank as a character, showing that he's more than just a mindless killing machine. It also tackles hot social and political topics and takes the time to make us care about all it's characters, supporting and essential. So in the end I can't complain too much. Especially since it humanizes this character in ways the movies haven't before and delivers a world that's darker and grimier than even that of Jessica Jones. Just know that you aren't always going to see The Punisher, well, punish.

When the guns do come out, boy did they nail the brutality. This is a violent show. Very violent. The best part is how it manages to mix the gunplay with a sense of moral quandary. It manages to include the graphic depictions, make them exciting and fun to watch, without over-glorifying all of the killing. It rightfully shows that The Punisher's actions are both a result of being backed into a corner and his fragmented sanity. It doesn't pull any punches and is certainly satisfying to watch, but this isn't killing just for the sake of killing. It's done maturely so that there's a brain mixed in with all that blood.

Simply put, I was hooked on The Punisher from the first episode. I cared about all of it's characters and their stories even when things got slow. It does total justice to a character who is just too controversial to ever be a true hit with professional critics out there. However, where this show succeeds where the movies have failed is in making Frank Castle more than just a killing machine. They gave him depth and filled his world a lot of character who are just as interesting in their own ways. This is right up there with the best of what the MCU has to offer, and I, for one, can't wait for more.

May be critics just read summary on Wikipedia and found out, that series is about american soldiers doing crimes, and Afghanistan policeman investigating it, and how american soldier becomes terrorist (i am not talking about Frank). Yeah, it asks a lot of controversial questions, but this questions should be asked, and this shouldn't be a reason to rate is soo low. On the other hand, absolutely sterile Luke Cage has got 79, series with absolutely no stakes, bulletproof hero, what can be more boring.

Bernthal acting is absolutely brilliant. This series could have been without any action, and it would be amazing just because of his performance. His relationship with Micro is very enjoyable. Action scenes are amazing, extremely powerful.

Pure genius in the scene where the bomber tries to let the birds out of their cage, but the birds have been conditioned to remain despite the open cage and open window. He has a political manifesto and believes he is freeing the people. Much like the birds, the public's reaction is to stay imprisoned.

It would be absolutely despicable if the critics are short-handing this great art due to political reasons and bias. Best marvel series ever.

But these chapters go unnoticed by the scenes in which Frank Castle comes into action, the mere presence of the character gives a feeling of euphoria and joy.
John Bernthal makes a performance equal or superior to the view in DD season 2, his scenic skills and his character is what undoubtedly saves the series.
There are chapters in which the plot gets stuck and can not continue to develop, but once it is achieved it is wonderful and you look forward to knowing more.
The series is unstable in the aspect of plots, while they show you the events of secondary characters that stop the displacement of the story, suddenly they return to the main character and make a breakthrough that rewards everything you expected to see it.
The action scenes are great, the violence is explicit, touches on deep issues about war, trauma, death and justice. Just everything you expected from a series of this vigilante.

THE BEST TV ADAPTATION OF A COMIC EVER MADE. It was gritty and dark in refreshingly new and astonishingly powerful ways. The Dark Knight movies being over a decade old and Walking Dead being on its sixth season, it managed to do this by addressing real issues like PTSD and coming to terms with the finality of death and loss. Beyond that, the directing and editing were artful. You can see the choices the writer and director made and the clear themes running through every episode. I would say that in this sense it was even better than the first season of Breaking Bad. It had a clarity of voice and a perspective, and it didn't shy away from political issues. A true masterpiece. I am truly puzzled by the critics reviews. Many state that it is plodding or slow, but its the investment in its characters in the first few episodes is what makes this story so rich. The characters are nuanced, with conflicting emotions and motivations, and throughout the entire show, you're left feeling like anything can happen at any moment which heightens the excitement. Somehow, among all this cultivation of story and character, there still manages to be those scenes that make you jump up in the air and pump your fist, or curl up in a ball and cover your eyes. I have to wonder if some of these critics are burned out and lacking in patience or just lost the ability to empathize with characters. Fatigue from over-analysis? And for the reviews that say that there is not enough action, I would argue that what we need less of is more action without a full understanding or motivation for why. That is the core of what this makes this show so amazing. That it takes these Dirty Harry/Taken/John Wick kind of action scenes, and imbues it with deeper sense of meaning. So that a gun battle isn't just a gun battle, but the physical manifestation of several well-crafted stories intersecting and colliding. Oh, and as a side-note, the action scenes are amazing! This show stands among an elite group of television series in the last few years that serve as evidence that this is truly the golden age of television. Expand

All too often it’s a plodding slog. Bernthal’s performance somehow finds energy in Frank’s pain. ... Lightfoot’s breadth of storytelling is gratifying--he wants to do more than give the cultural landscape another killing machine to idolize. It makes The Punisher less uncomfortable to watch than it could be amid so many outbreaks of extreme gun violence. But it isn’t an easy ride.

The show is well-written and Jon Bernthal ("The Walking Dead") is fantastic as Castle, the Afghanistan war veteran turned vigilante. ... But the story itself isn't dynamic enough to punch through all the cultural baggage this show is unfairly (or as some believe, justifiably) saddled with. It doesn't help that the burly character's superpower isn't a superpower at all. It's old-fashioned rage, coupled with special ops training.

Better too rich than too thin, to be sure, but “The Punisher” casts its net so wide that almost none of these stories get a fair shake. When they do, it’s usually the acting that closes the gap — Woll and Bernthal are so good together that it almost doesn’t matter that their scenes get snapped out quickly — but it’s hard to escape the feeling that, in giving us all that story, “The Punisher” doesn’t have much time for substance. It’s simultaneously too much and not enough.
