'Madiba' is not a worthy Mandela biopic. It sure isn't all bad, but the differences between Mandela and Fishburne are just too much, making the character less interesting. Also, I understand the need to focus on the anti-apartheid movement rising but rushing the life of the beloved leader makes us feel less attached to him.

Somehow, despite obvious physical differences, Fishburne channels the spirit of Mandela well. Backing him is an equally strong supporting cast, especially Orlando Jones and David Harewood as the dedicated ANC members Oliver Tambo and Walter Sisiulu, respectively, and Terry Pheto as the fiery Winnie Mandela. Madiba is must-see television for anyone who questions the limits of human nature in pursuing a cause.

Madiba is inspiring and ambitious in both its casting and subject matter -- a historical drama that once would have landed on a major network and represents a welcome venture for BET.

It’s a by-the-numbers biopic, taking a straight line through history that doesn’t allow for much complexity or uncertainty.
