Big fan of Long Way Round and Long Way Down, so I've been looking forward to this, and the boys do not disappoint. They fall into the same old rhythms despite their age and Charlie's physical condition (explained in the show). Add the many challenges of using electric cars and bikes (the trucks are the first two the company ever made), and there's a new dynamic. We’re on board for the thrill of the trip and the stunning visuals we’ll see on Long Way Up, plus seeing McGregor and Boorman renew their friendship will be fun. But the privilege shown on this trip is staggering and detracts from our enjoyment of the show.

The vistas are glorious. The locals are charming. The technical feat is impressive. The stars and their supporting cast seem like thoroughly decent chaps. Sadly, such qualifiers don’t stop this self-indulgent series from being deeply tedious television. It’s like a Top Gear segment stretched way too thinly.

It’s a lovely travelogue – 13 countries worth. Hyper-miling to do it with electric bikes adds bits of suspense and touches of drama.
