While it evolves into a competent, at times rather deft, drama, it proves too staid to capture the idiosyncratic, fiercely political spirit of its source material—and feels, as a result, less like a reimagining than a sandpapered imitation.

There's so little of this that's very Yakuza in tone, and it’s so limited in inspiration from the games that there’s hardly much you’ll recognize from them. There’s great character work from some of the cast – particularly Kento Kaku as Nishikiyama – but sadly nothing very interesting for them to do.

The story just doesn't have enough meat on its bones to fill six 40 to 50-minute-long episodes and keep the viewer's attention.
