Cutting edge investigative journalism together with well crafted jokes, this marriage makes LWT an excellent show. In my opinion John Oliver is a very funny journalist.

It's a successful show, but perhaps overrated.

They've also got some of that zeitgeist-y vibe that their obvious competitor, the Daily Show, has lost. Last Week Tonight feels fresh. They take on subjects that even other comedian/newsmen wouldn't do, they get guests that make you think "only on HBO" (Snowden!), their attempts to transcend the show and create "gone viral" social media moments seem to be effective.

On the downside, I don't think John Oliver's nerdgasms or the show's various form jokes ("the only thing worse than this is that! The only thing!") are actually funny. As is always the case, it seems they aren't funny when they're trying too hard. I also wish there was someone other than Oliver would be a correspondent or something; it's hard to sustain the show with one person talking all the time, and Colbert he ain't.

I imagine the show is just beginning a long and successful run, and it'll be interesting to see if it does expand to more and longer shows and how it evolves. At the moment, it's entertaining and watchable, outpacing the other competing shows, but still not hitting on all cylinders.

It's a really good show, pointing real issues in the American system but also covering great international news you don't hear on regular news. It's also funny, but watching it from France, i feel it's sometimes trying too hard, there's a lot of screaming coming from Oliver when doing his jokes, which is sometimes annoying, but certainly something you're more used to see on american TVIt's a really good show, pointing real issues in the American system but also covering great international news you don't hear on regular news. Still earning an 8 though. Expand
