Broadcast on the BBC from 1973 until 2010 Last of the Summer Wine was the longest running comedy show of all time, and despite several changes to the line up and the tone of the show, it managed to build a fairly loyal fan-base amongst older viewers. Anyone under the age of 70 watching the show today will likely be wondering quite how it remained popular for so long, as to describe most episodes as forgettable is an understatement.

Seeing as these early episodes were set in the 70’s, the behaviour of some of the men towards the female characters is also pretty questionable by today’s standards.

Last of the Summer Wine has plenty of charm and wit, but gets a bit tiresome after only a few episodes. Luckily, it has enough randomness to keep one interested, but, unfortunately, never rises above only being modestly funny. However, it is easy to see the appeal, for the British and Americans, since the show can genuinely appeal to everyone, regardless of age. In its favor, the show has little to no continuity, meaning that someone watching the show can start from anywhere and easily follow the episodes. However, Fawlty Towers and Keeping Up Appearances are probably better choices for a similar kind of comedy. Expand
