Rare true crime docuseries that shows empathy to the victims, their families, and their community. It gave enough historical references for the viewer to understand the climate for those under siege while offering up enough whodunit to keep those interested whose appetites lean heavily in that direction.

This four-part series is much more than mere true-crime documentary. As it widens its outlook to explore how such an atrocity could have occurred, its political savviness and thoughtful tenderness make it a masterclass in righteous, acutely relevant reporting.

The reason why Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York is watchable is that it’s not just about a bunch of related murders, but about just how uphill of a climb the LGBTQIA+ community had in New York and elsewhere during a time that wasn’t all that long ago.

This thoughtful, well-paced series from director Anthony Caronna weaves together illuminating social and historical context, loving explorations of the victims' lives, and a gripping criminal mystery to create an emotional and educational odyssey that transcends the standard boundaries of true crime.
