This show has great production values, fantastic martial arts set pieces and beautiful cinematography. Unfortunately it gets bogged down in a strained narrative and only adequate acting. It has great potential but I'm not sure if I'm up to watching it through its growth period.

In an apocalyptic land he is a Baron who rules a portion of land and is very evil and diabolical, in addition there are other barons such as the Black Widow who are equally as evil. Then you have the clippers who are assassin's and ordered by the baron's to kill at will. Sonny being Quinn's top clipper is a thrill to watch as he magnificent in his craft of martial arts! Also you have the teens who will thrill at the emergence of MK a good looking and well cast youngster who has a dark secret and starts emerging onto the scene when he is found by Sonny locked in a trunk. The show has a dark setting and the visuals are great to go along with a well written show and doubled with a great cast. Kudo's to AMC for this well crafted and rounded show, not just for the lovers of martial arts, but for anyone who enjoys an action packed serial. Expand

Totally silly, but succesfully audacious; Into The Badlands has loads of full of fun little tv cliches sandwiched within some questionable performances and dumb dialouge. Not to say the acting is bad; its mostly just servicable with a select few standouts. The main baron Quinn comes off as the most natural; a sort of psycho power hungry Game of Thrones style king (lot of the pieces being set down in these first couple of episodes are totally Game of Thrones esque) who genrally just steals scenes and acts super evil just because. Which is the same thing one can say of the world building, its just there like it or not, logic be damned. Expand

This is the kind of stuff people like in the 1980's where the main hero kills 4 people in one small sweep of his blade. It tends to be fine is certain shows where there are powers or various superhuman strength, in this show, it just does not work. It tries to be too impressive, too good at the start that it also puts itself in this situation where they have to one up it every time. By the second episode, the main hero is not against 30+ raiders. I'm going to make an assumption here that by the season finale, the main character will be fighting an entire baron's army.

The plot from the 1st and 2nd episode is just so bland. The actors don't seem to be invested in it to make you feel the immersion. The plot has potential as it is set in a vast world, but it seems the budget wont let it reach that potential. This is a classic problem that shows from ABC, CW11..etc have. They get a small budget and it will only increase if they start pulling in viewers.

I rate this show 4/10. I can't in good heart give it anything more; i don't think it will get better, especially considering that episode 2 was even worse. My recommendation is to skip it.

The show had exactly what I was worried about, overly dramatic oriental style fight scenes. The main protagonist guy? yeah he can fight about 50 guys by himself. I'm a huge fan of martial arts and on that level this show delivers in spades. Unfortunately what started as an interesting story ends up into one hot mess of cliches and whatnot. So much potential wasted here. Will not be back for season 2

Having said that, I do anticipate Into The Badlands to catch on similarly to how The Walking Dead did. That may be a bold prediction, but for anyone who recalls watching the first (six episode, like ITB) season, The Walking Dead was in many ways awkward, corny, and without a strong, developed identity. It was the television show equivalent of going through puberty. Into the Badlands suffers from the same shortcomings in it's maiden voyage, I have no delusions about that, but beneath all of it I can really see the potential for something great and I'm looking forward to watching it grow into itself. In the meantime, it's still a very enjoyable ride.

If I had to relate this show to other shows/movies, I would probably say Into the Badlands is a combination of Game of Thrones with it's fatal politics and uber violence, and The Warriors (1979), a decidedly less complex story, and it's simple "faction" system, i.e. a strong use of color and uniformity between members making clans easily distinguishable.

Into The Badlands is one of the most entertaining shows on television! Maybe some elements of this show are basic, but, honestly, who cares? What's matter here is appreciate those amazing fights scenes, the great characters (specially the Widow, Tilda and Zypher) and follow a surrounding story with so much potential.

This show is being horribly underrated here. This show is only one episode in and has so much potential. The fight scenes are absolutely fantastic, probably the best I've seen on TV. The fight scenes are just as good as the fight scenes on Arrow. And the deep, rich story makes this an awesome show.

My wife and I were also really impressed with the beautiful and vibrant colors of the cinematography. We'll see where the story goes from here, its a fairly big conceit to have a future world with no guns, but I'm intrigued by where they are going from that starting point. We've got the set up for future battles between the various barons, but we'll also got hints of something greater beyond, so the Barons may end up just being a distraction. We'll have to see where the story goes from here.

Into the Badlands is a modern take on all those cheesy martial arts movies back in the 80s, and it a fairly enjoyable show to watch from what little being given to us.

The show excels in the one thing it focuses on, the combat. While at times it may seem hilarious how many people 1 man can kill, that's kind of the point of the whole show. Characters jump, slash, and flip around the room with a variety of blades, axes, and other ninja tools somehow found in the middle of what is obviously the Southern United States. It really seems like they know what they are doing in many cases and it rarely leaves me disappointed after a fight.

Another nice aspect is the porduction value, this show really has some nice sets, combining the Wild West, Southern Plantation, and Steampunk-esque outfits together in a unique setting loosely based of Journey to the West (Sonny, the main character, is no doubt the Son Goku of this tale). Pretty much everything here is done with practical affects and is done well. I would complain that the few moments they do try to use anything other sometimes comes off a kind of ugly, but it's rare and can be blamed by the lower budget of a new show. All in all it's a pretty place to look at and see the characters kill and travel in.

The show as of now is still a little weak on the story, however, this is only the first season and many of AMC's shows sometimes have slow bits in every season. Some characters seem a little out of place and do not feel as valued as some others. While some characters, like The Baron, are intimidating and interesting others, like various side characters and even the main character himself seem to be bland and cold. Of course this may just be how they were designed, they are ruthless killers after all, but I would really hope to see some character growth soon.

All in all I say at least watch a few episodes and give them some support. This show has potential, and giving it time we may one day see this series really pull off some cool stuff.

People that are writing bad reviews are obviously not Marital Art fans, because if they were, they would not be talking **** about it. The fight scenes are awesome and could almost be compared to the movie 'IP Man' (Awesome Martial Arts Movie).
The time slot maybe hurting the series ratings too. AMC has compared the ratings to The Walking Dead series which is not relevant, the plot and all around story is totally different, (switch the time slot with the Walking Dead, and let's see how the ratings do then!). Maybe if AMC would or could air 'Into The Badlands' after The Walking Dead is over for the season, this too would probably give the series a better chance at ratings. All I know for sure is it is really nice to have a totally different series out there that does not revolve around Crime Shows aka Cops!, there are way to many of those.

The first thing I thought of while I was watching this was Quentin Tarantino doing a TV show, because it just reminded me of his kind of over the top action from Kill Bill. By no means is this a bad thing the fight scenes are by far some of the best I've seen outside action movies. Which is saying a lot cause I thought Daredevil really set the bar high for a TV series.

For the people who are saying that storytelling was lacking - I find that most shows lack real story in their first show or two. It does take some time to build the background of the world, which they have started to do. I understand there are a very limited amount of shows in the season, but I have a simple rule for most new shows that I start - I call it the three episode rule. If a show does not get good in three episodes then I drop it. For a show like Into the Badlands it has to hit faster since there are a limited number of shows, I knew after the pilot I would like the series.

was reluctant to watch at first, previews seemed to concentrate on fight scenes, but after watching first episode, then two, then three . . . now hooked on the characters and story line. anticipating the next episodes.

Into The Badlands is a breath of fresh air compared to Network television. The cinematography is superb and the fight scenes are well choreographed and the plot has limitless potential.
I hope season 2 will have more than 6 episodes.

I think the critics were a bit too harsh on this show. It has kind of a "Mad Max"/Quentin Tarantino feel to it, meaning it takes place in this sort of over-the-top, stylized reality. If you can go along with that stylized reality, it's a fun show to watch. I guess my only complaint is that I wish some of the actors were a bit more likable. Aramis Knight, who plays M.K. is the typical "generic teen actor" who lacks charisma. Marton Csokas, who plays the main villain is also a bit boring...kind of just a generic, cartoonish villain. But most of the other actors in this show are pretty compelling and their storylines are holding my attention (notably Orla Brady, Sarah Bolger, Madeleine Mantock, Ally Ioannides, and Stephen Lang). Interesting story so far, acting isn't outstanding and the fighting is completely unrealistic, little over the top and hokey. But most people have never seen a real fight and if they are lucky they never will. Anyone else notice the Widow Lives at a Country Club, in one scene you can see a well groomed fairway, a manicured green and several well kept sand bunkers in the back ground. Bet there is also a really wonderful like with swans too. Do they not realize that if you have the tools and equipment to keep 1940's vintage cars running, you can also make guns? Bombs, rockets, mines, light aircraft, so on and so forth?
I'll keep watching as long as the Widow is around, she gives me a chubby.

Great show. If you love action, great acting, an excellent storyline and have an appreciation for the martial arts, this is the show for you. I noticed that "users" rate this show a 8.1 vs "pro-reviews". Every week they pack in Jackie Chan quality fight scenes! Excellent show.

I'm catching up with Season 2. This show is one of the best shows I'm watching. The fights are the best I know. The characters are all strong ones. I hope to see many more seasons.
I wouldn't trust the rating on Rotten Tomatoes that much. They are giving The Orville 21% while the public is giving them 93%.

For all of the impressive whirling, gouging and slashing acrobatics on display in Badlands, the action often feels strangely inert. Whether badass male or kickass female, these combatants tend to be joyless, expressionless ciphers. [23 Nov - 6 Dec 2015, p.14]

Yes, it's riddled with comic-book clichés. True, the dialogue is out of a Cracker Jack box, and most of its characters have less dimension than cardboard cutouts. But I'm a sucker for well-choreographed kung fu films. And Badlands--a Mad Max-ian postapocalyptic kung fu western that costars Emily Beecham as a killer beauty--has some wonderfully wigged-out fight scenes.

The problem is that at no point during the first couple of episodes does the show truly come alive as a drama about actual people inhabiting a convincing fictional space. It doesn't pulse with life, as any series defined mainly through its actions ought to. And when action does happen, it's disappointingly personality-free.
