ugh - so awful and on the nose writing and fake and terrible and typical Ryan Murphy where he rips off a zillion different other artists and claims it's an homage.

Wow after all those delicious series, this one is a bomb. After "The Politician" also on Netflix I didn't think Ryan and his posse could helm a second dud, but they did. The acting is terrible, writing is bad and show boring.

This is Ryan Murphy's first big show for Netflix (7 episodes). The series gets off to a somewhat steamy start, but the prurient aspects of the story slowly cede to the melodrama of the situations and relationships. There are lots of beautiful period locales (some of which look familiar from Murphy's earlier Hollywood series Feud on FX), beautiful costumes (especially Patti LuPone's dresses) and lot's of wonderful performances, including Jim Parsons, LuPone, Miro Sorvino and several relative newcomers. One minor complaint: The actors who portray Rock Hudson and fictional Jack Castello look too much alike. While there's lots to enjoy in this glam series, the final episode (appropriately titled "A Hollywood Ending") was just too perfect and made it feel more like a message show than a dishy Tinsletown drama. It’s got some good production value (I love me some 1940s LA), but the writing and characters can be pretty wonky and preachy at times...

I really loved this mini series, it is not perfect (a little bit cheese at times), but for what it make me feel and how much I enjoy it, it deserves a 10/10. We already have hundreds of TV Shows and movies that show the reality of how racist and sexist was Hollywood in the Golden Age, so having this alternate history/universe where someone in the Golden Age of Hollywood was brave enough to take a risk, and that risk pay off, it was cool to see. I totally recommend it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Obrigado Ryan Murphy. Seus projetos dão visibilidade para as minorias e são emocionantes. Recontar a história dos anos 40 na sua nova série "Hollywood" foi comovente e arrebatador. Imaginar o mundo como ele deveria ter sido foi lindo... Expand

Simply amazing! Show Hollywood like it has never been shown before. I love it

Most Ryan Murphy fans will probably love this show. I watch anything Ryan Murphy puts out, and I love the classic group of characters that he uses in his projects. My love for Ryan Murphy's projects combined with my love for this old Hollywood era made me expect to really love this. I did enjoy watching it, but the emotional payoff wasn't quite there for me in the end. There was no realMost Ryan Murphy fans will probably love this show. My love for Ryan Murphy's projects combined with my love for this old Hollywood era made me expect to really love this. I did enjoy watching it, but the emotional payoff wasn't quite there for me in the end. There was no real attempt at conflict resolution, as all problems were solved by waving a magic wand. I do really want to praise the beautiful colors, costumes and music that really contributed to this beautiful old Hollywood tribute. I also really want to give props to David Corenswet, Holland Taylor and Mira Sorvino who each did a fantastic job portraying the authentic mannerisms and vocal inflections of the era. I did love being transported to this setting, and did enjoy watching it but definitely left being a little disappointed. It wasn't quite satisfying or rewarding, but it was a fun and entertaining ride. Expand

This is about the worst series I have ever watched. It is so bad that it makes me want to write a comment about it. Wow.

It’s an intentionally delicious and messy show, born to be binged, although a lot of the name-dropping – Tallulah Bankhead, Noel Coward -- may float right by some. No matter, its glittery blend of the tacky, corny and controversial, while lacking real weight, is an escapist balm.

It’s tin-eared and confident but totally inadequate as a portrait of Hollywood as it was outside of its production design, which is admittedly rich.

Too bad the vehicle for their improbable success, based on the story of a woman who jumped off the Hollywood sign to her death, looks like a laughable dud. The grown-ups come off better, even when you know they know they're slumming. [11 - 24 May 2020, p.7]
