Three hours might seem a stretch for this subject, but with the Walden period bookended by the lesser known pre- and post-Walden years, it stays interesting all along. .... The documentary might inspire you, once you’re done watching, or even sooner, to get off the couch and go into the world.

It’s a handsomely mounted, passionate, and convincing piece of filmmaking. It also helped me readjust my own thinking on Thoreau, about whom I hold views more ambivalent than the rhapsodies on display here.

Despite the finality with which episode 2 concludes—I really thought the series was over and wasn’t unhappy—episode 3 is actually the most engaging of the chapters, being about Thoreau’s life as a surveyor, explorer, advance man for Charles Darwin, unflinching abolitionist and ally and interlocutor of John Brown. .... Most remarkably, Jeff Goldblum, who as Thoreau abandons anything associated with standard Jeff Goldblum and creates a vocal character full of self-reflection, naïveté and awe.
