How do I even start. Heartstopper was a roller coaster of emotions, but was not toxic in any way. It showed friendship, love, and acceptance. The show also portrayed the characters well, with the cast being almost the same age as the characters in the web novel, which gave a more authentic feel of a show. A rush of endophins after every episodes.

Alice Oseman managed to perfectly adapt her already wonderful comics into a Netflix show.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The show we needed as kids. Heartstopper isn't a show full of drama and crazy cliffhangers. What it is is the representation needed in queer cinema. A show that shows that not only is it ok to be queer, but you can have a happy ending as well. Too many times in cinema queer people are represented as tragedies. This is not that. The last feelings I have were bittersweet. This is a show I needed when I was young nut I'm grateful that the younger generation has this. Expand

For someone who's fallen in love but has never had the opportunity to be in love this show leaked onto a neglected want I'd somehow deluded myself of wanting. It's not something i thought people like me could have,a love independent of dubious internet introductions or perverted age differences- pure kinship. I've found it here in the wonderfully paced 8 episode's which move with a careful certainty surrounding it's contents as it slowly constructs it's inhabitants. These characters are very real, what they feel hurts or brightens, no black & white but most importantly there's this glowing sense of community. An acceptance of people for who they are and where they are within themselves.

"Heartstoppers " is true to it's name at multiple occasions. It's stacked with quietly sincere moments of connection that whilst making my eyes water with second hand joy darken my heart with the reality that i am only watching.

Nick is on the surface a cast of a cliché one we've been bombarded with (see: nate jacobs) that encapsulates distance, stoicism, aggressive and rage but the cliché are dismantled. Nick is a caring broad beacon of kindness, hes gentle and thoughtful,a near antheisis to the archetype confused heterosexual jock. His interactions with Charlie have an enviable excitement bereft of the agony of sexual confusion being used as a source of blame. Charlie own characterization is actually uncomfortable for me to watch...it's too close to home,to me. His introductory liason is a verbally abusive parasitic arrangement that serves to affrim his own self hatred:secretive sex ,slurs and gaslighting . He's demure for a man of his gifts and appeal . He feels small to witness like watching the city from a plane, you know this isn't how it looks that it's bigger but you're disconnected from the grounds perspective so you focus on the blurry insignificance. Charlie has a supportive friend group that never fails to be there for him a group composed of the feminine heterosexual Tao ,timid bisexual steven and recently transition p.o.c trans female. They create the grounds for interesting storylines as miscommunication goes awry between the few as they diverge into separate interpersonal relationships.

This show is far from perfect. It does tend to play it safe with a more sanitized exploration of teen romance than would normally exist (it's not as straight-washed as love, simon or victor) instead it feels innocent instead of pandering. But it does withhold the show doing justice to serious happenings which are either dulled or forgotten such as the near sexual assault in episode 2. The sidd characters are characterized solidly enough but they do feel empty of the realism people in their situations would feel. The actor is ok ,nothing to note or denounce. Overall this show fails to be brilliant but at least it doesn't try to. It's modest without being ashamed and delivers all it needs to. It's piqued my interest with the original source material.

    Definitely a must watch.

It is a comic book fantasy about LGBTQ+ teenagers, and as such, it softens any hard edges and amplifies the sweetness of the romance at its centre. There is something altogether soothing about the time spent in its company.
