We’re recommending it on the strength of Gomez’s lead performance and Lawrence’s ability to guide his showrunners to better episodes as his shows first seasons go along. But it’s too generic at this point to be considered a decent family sitcom, much less a successor to such a well-loved ’80s series.

Gomez oozes enthusiasm and clearly Alicia cares a lot. The kids are all pretty great too, particularly Escalona, Goodjohn, and Severs, who have the most opportunity to provide their respective characters with depth and nuance.

Gomez is just as delightful here as she was throughout the four-season run of One Day At A Time. Now we just need to see if the rest of the show can rise up to meet her—at the moment, it’s got quite a climb ahead of it.
