Every new event and plot twist is nonsensical and riddled with holes, but this is something every Haven fan will have come to expect at this point. Since the beginning the writers of this show have been content to just throw whatever random crap or plot device they can come up with regardless of whether or not it makes sense even in the context of its bizarre universe and that hasn't changed here. It's just nice that it finally feels like all of it is actually building up to something for a change.

They doubled the amount of episodes this season in an effort to wrap things up for the fans and there are some severe pacing issues as a result. The show drags its feet in the first half with all of the incredibly creepy Mara stuff. Watching Nathan try to seduce Audrey out of her with tickle fights and love talk all while she's chained to chairs or even a bed can be really uncomfortable. The second half comes off as quite rushed, particularly near the end. While it's nice to finally get some urgency I actually would not have been bothered to spend more time with the final act as William Shatner proves to be a great new foe.

The way the appearances of random troubles now tie into the main events is a big improvement to the rather detatched case-a-week approach of the first three seasons. Especially since they are now stretched out to cover multiple episodes effectively giving them their own arcs. I really enjoyed how things like the darkness trouble gave certain parts of the season their own tone. A highlight of the second half comes in the form of the returning haunted house trouble as it allows an episode to experiment with a cool found-footage horror style where we watch all of the action through security cameras or cell phones.

It's easy to deal with most of season 5's issues as they're the same ones viewers have been putting up with or looking past since the very first episode. However, there's a glaring issue this time around that's almost impossible to not be offended by, and that's the weird hate boner the show developed for its best character, Duke Crocker. It's so bizarre to see everyone act like he's never done anything for anyone other than himself despite the fact that he's been the only one to truly put the town and his friends before himself in every scenario. It is so unfitting that he's the only member of the main cast to not recieve a happy ending and that is sure to leave a sour taste in the mouth of any longtime fan.

Season 5 of Haven at last answers all of our questions. Its only real strength is that it's more watchable than seasons 1-3, so don't make the mistake of thinking that this is actually good television. It's just better than the majority of what's come before. The ending's treatment of Duke Crocker is abhorrent so things don't conclude on a very satisfying note, but I was kept engaged throughout the entire 26 episode run. For that, I give it a pass.
