I'm going to make this short: If you haven't watched TTGL (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann) and are a fan of anime, do it. It is one of the one of the best anime ever made. It has an amazing story, beautiful animation, great music (Libera me from Hell comes to mind), amazing characters, and so much more. 10/10.

Gurren Lagann Season 1 is one of the most powerful and emotional seasons in animation history. There is a wonderful pacing and character development that just floors me everytime a speech is made. A outstanding theme song and a wonderful story of courage, hope, heroism and determination. One of my favorite animes. In 27 episodes, you see the main character go from a young teenager, to an adult, to an old man. It's brought tears to my eyes on multiple occasions. The combat and plot can be whacky, but the story between the characters is touching.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (TTGL) is an amazing series encompassing many characters whom you learn to love, and a compelling story driven by human spirit and the will to fight for the future. Nothing could have been done better in this show and I wouldn't change anything whatsoever. I highly recommend anyone claiming to enjoy anime to watch this series!

When you watch "Gurren Lagann", all you can think of is the passion that was used in the series. The tale of brotherly bond and the strive for the future is what Gurren Lagann is all about and many will, probably, learn a thing or two from this great anime series.

This is one of my favorite shows of all time. one thing about it is, they tried to make it as....... anime, for lack of a better adjective, as they could. for example, at one point, they have a robot in a robot in a robot in a robot in a robot fighting in a space ocean.

god awful, the dialogues are corny and cliché as can be. There's
nothing in the show that I can tell is good, it's just that bad. I'm
giving this a zero, not only because I want its undeserved rating to go
down, but also because I sincerely think that it's a 1/10 show. Hell I
would give it a 0 if it was a thing...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Perhaps at first glance, Gurren Lagann is you typical Shonen anime. With characters shouting at everything, boob jokes, and a metric ton of action, it's easy to sort of dismiss Gurren Lagann after a few episodes. Yes, Gurren Lagann's stellar animation and action are the very genesis of the series, but those of us who watched this anime all the way through its 27 episode arc know that it offers a variety of different experiences throughout.

The easiest reason to love Gurren Lagann is just how damn fun it is to watch. The best way to enjoy this show is to turn off your brain and simply appreciate its amazing action sequences. Explosions are especially awe-inducing; this is an area that most animators don't spend a lot of time doing. It's surprising too, since great explosions aren't always possible on budget, live action TV shows. Gurren Lagann truly reminds us why animation is special, without dumbing its plot or characters down to the point where only kids would enjoy it.

I also have to admire the show's boldness. Gurren Lagann goes through two major shake-ups in its first and only Season. I've made it no secret in the past that I wasn't so fond of the show initially. However, I eventually warmed to the characters and slowly learned what made the show great. I'm unsure if this was intentional or not but I found Kamina's dialogue to be a lot more entertaining in the episodes before he died, making his death all the more impactful. He was a fun character to watch, and his death was an important stepping stone for the rest of the Season.

The second act has Simon and the rest of Team Dai Gurren head hunting Lord Genome, a seemingly self-righteous prick who aims to kill any humans that poke their heads above ground. It later turns out his goal is more noble but the writers sure do a good job of making us hate him. His disregard for human life is spine chilling, so it was a really great feel-good moment when Simon blasted a huge hole through his chest. Gurren Lagann isn't exactly a show to watch if you're in the mood for some strategic writing but the reveal the Lord Genome was trying to protect humans against the anti-spirals much later was a sound decision.

After a boring recap episode, we're presented with a huge time skip where the team forms an above-ground government free of oppression. We're presented with a new dynamic here that has the citizens of the town becoming complacent. While it does reflect our society in a way, it's brief and forced at times. Though, it does lead to Rossiu's interesting character study that almost leads to his suicide. After that... space battles! Gurren Lagann was thankfully in top form during its final stretch.

The very end also gives us a nice bit of closure. Seeing Nia go left us with some emotional weight, and seeing the characters years after the series' events was nice. Simon seems to be living as a wanderer now, now that he believes he fulfilled his purpose.

One thing I wasn't so much a fan of was the series' humour. I also found that the voice acting was quite poor at times. Plus, I wasn't a fan of some of the weirder and aspects. For example, they literally shattered outer space near the end. Like I said, turning off your brain is a solid plan.

Gurren Lagann achieves and exceeds what it sets out to do. Although most publications didn't look twice at this anime, it was one of the better Science Fiction shows on TV. Gurren Lagann doesn't invoke much in the way of thought but it's a highly entertaining anime that is tough not to recommend.

Gurren Lagann take place in a dark future where humanity on the surface has been whipped out, leaving human kind to dig forever under ground. Until protagonist Simon finds a key shaped like a drill, and activates an ancient mech, stopping a rampaging machine from terrorizing the village, and finally escaping the underground, to face an even greater threat in the outside world.

Gurren Lagann is a non-stop crazy ride from start to finish. The pacing is great, the characters are very likeable and the fight scenes are phenomenal, it's such a fun watch.
