Dec 22, 2017Brilliant series. Fantastic costumes and overall production values. Kit harington has done amazing in his very first job as a producer and showrruner. Gunpowder is hands down one of the best minisseries of 207.

Dec 23, 2017Decent historical, decent writing, more than decent acting , great cast, didn't know much of anything beyond the fact the Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt by Catholics to blow up Parliament (thanks V for Vendetta) this filled in all the blanks my history lessons had left out. It's a decent watch.

Dec 28, 2017Kit Harington's new series is nothing short of outstanding. I look foward to see his next projects as a producer. He has proved that he has a bright future ahead of him once jon snow is retired for good.

Dec 18, 2017Hands down the best television series of all time. The writing and acting never cease to astonish, amaze, delight, intrigue, and captivate. The camera work is cinema-worthy. The casting brilliant. I could watch each episode three times and still be held in thrall by the excellence of this series on every level.

Feb 4, 2018Excellent movie quality casting for what felt like a historical documentary. While graphic, it wasn't for the sake of gratuitous violence, but accurate to the consequences of the time period. The Protestant Inquisitors were complex enough to be absolutely sinister but still human. Costumes and sets were immersive. Good production by HBO.

Mar 17, 2019The show is not a total failure, with 3 episodes u really could not get invested in the characters or the story. Some of the actors were solid while some left much to be desired.I guess that is how i would best summarize the show Good to look at but it leaves much to be desired in the story department.

The bulk of Gunpowder is a reasonably exciting costume drama combining history and suspense, with fine performances by Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss as the King’s vindictive secretary of state and Peter Mullan (Top of the Lake, Ozark) as Henry Garnet, a Jesuit priest sympathetic to Catesby’s efforts.

[Gunpowder] takes its precious time with weighty moments yet still skims the surface of things in a way that never fully engages nor illuminates its key characters.

The series is handsomely dressed, and Mr. Blakeson has the blunt ability to ratchet up tension that he showed in the 2009 film “The Disappearance of Alice Creed.” But Mr. Bennett’s script, while it delineates the issues, doesn’t make us care about the people involved.
