It gleefully and lengthily traded in female terror and, as you might have spotted, I hated it. ... John Simm is very good as gentle DS Roy Grace, just as Craig Parkinson is enjoyable as DS Norman Potting. They earn the two stars. Plus, the dialogue is pretty good.

Thank heavens for the upstanding DI Roy Grace (John Simm) and his squeaky-clean cohort of slightly plastic colleagues who explain things to one another in overt and presentational dialogue. The only one of them having much fun is Craig Parkinson.

Aside from the show’s failings as a compelling episode – its uneven pacing, heavy-handed clues and drab dialogue – the biggest problem was its treatment of its female characters.
