Leary is unquestionably the star, but the way he interacts with everyone else doesn’t make him seem like the star of their lives. It’s also just funnier [than "Shifting Gears"].

While some of the geopolitical commentary proves cutting, the father-daughter relationship tussle is pretty much the sitcom pabulum you’d expect.

The largely unfunny pilot of Going Dutch would normally lead us to give the show a “skip it,” but given the showrunner’s pedigree and the interpersonal potential of the father-daughter story, we’re giving the show a chance to improve.
