Being such an important moment and having it contrived so much just to get the story beats they want has ultimately broken the show. This is not the end of Game of Thrones, this season is a joke and does not represent the actual ending of the show. That ending is something we will have to play out in our minds, and or wait for George RR Martin to fix it for us. Expand

A laughably bad end to a show whose quality has been in decline for quite some time now. Others have already covered the specifics exhaustively. Looking back at the early seasons, it's sad to think that this is how it all ends. Fortunately, it's only just the show.

Visually impressive, yet utterly moronic. The characters are there, but they're all skin-deep, and some behave like different people. If you care for Game of Thrones, the fantasy genre, or even just like good stories, this season should leave you mortified.

Jon Snow having been resurrected, finding out to be a Targaryen and true heir to the throne for nothing, Arya meeting the best mentors for nothing, Tyrion being dumbed out by the writers because of lack of imagination, all the prophecies and character development and foreshadowing.. All for f-ing nothing. Dumb & Dumber managed to ruin one of the best show ever just before the finish line. All those prophecies and things that were developing in the end were for nothing as they were not even used for a purpose. It might have been salvageable if they waited for the books to be finished or dedicate the entire season to the night king battle, while at the same time depicting very slowly but surely Daenerys as a villain, as they wanted to, or simply pick another route. And then! Only then dedicate another season to end all of it properly... Dany doing all that is just out of character, after freeing so many people, breaker of chains, after liberating slaves she just snaps like that. What the actual f-? Episode 6: Easily one of the most disappointing episodes not only of this season but of the whole series. There is a petition to remake it all but I doubt it will happen (i'd really be glad if it did). Season starting sub-par, below average of every season only for it to get worse each time.. after episode 1 or 2 it was just a free fall without a parachute. I feel bad for all the actors, engineers, artists and crew members who worked really really hard to deliver an astonishing thing visually, audio wise, fx wise and acting wise but which were ultimately went down the **** hole because of some stupid writers. The crew and actors deserve an 11/10 all day everyday (which is why this is a 3/10 and not a 0/10)... the **** writers? (negative) -10/10. This show deserved sooo much more yet got so much less because of incompetent writers. Truly sad to see some dumb writers defecate on a masterpiece where people put their heart and soul into. Although the ending is the worst ever, and the night king having deserved a whole season dedicated to it, this still remains one of the best shows ever. We'll see the real ending when the books come out and not this rushed lackluster thing they call the ending season to a series that took almost one decade to make. Jon Snow, true heir and king to the Iron Throne, king in the north and king beyond the wall. That's how it should have ended. Either him on the throne or nobody. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The ONLY reason I have given this train wreck a 3 instead of 1 is some of the production value in terms of special effects.
Writing, has been horrific, cliche, deus-ex-machina every episode to subvert the audiences expectations, attention to detail went out the window this was painfully manifest in every battle scene to the invisible pirate ships that decloaked like Klingon Birds of Prey after firing anti-dragon bolts that would make a modern Anti-Air battery blush all this done in the name of creating some great cinematic experience, here's a clue,,, it doesn't! it's cheap and undeserving of what has been for the most part an excellent television series.
The decline that started somewhere around season 5 matured into a festering heap of dung by season 8.
Having just watched the finale, I was so glad to see those end credits because it meant the torturous death of the great series was finally over.

The poor quality of writing this season makes my heart hurt. Everyone seems to agree that by not having the books to draw from, the show suffers, and that's becoming increasing obvious with each new episode.

It's such an incredible shame because a show that nosedives in the final seasons isn't nearly as re-watchable as one that doesn't.

Daenerys isn't a villain. Daenerys was sold, raped and betrayed, fought for what she wanted and won all obstacles, so can the writers treat her as the leader she is? Cause all we saw in the premiere was a weak and boring sidekick to Jon.

There's not enough space to fit everything in here, so to go by point:
    - Characters have gone borderline stupid and are acting unlike themselves.
    - The plot has holes in it bigger than Drogon and Veserion combined.
    - Entire character arcs have been thrown out of the window, and are now anime fan fiction.
    - The characters have plot armor thicker than the box office of Avengers Endgame.
    - Most importantly: It is nothing more than a tv movie CGI garbage fest at this point.
Are there positives? Well, no. But the production team behind making the sets, costumes, music and CGI is to be commended. The attention to these aspects is still very impressive.

I am profoundly disappointed in David Benioff and D.B. Weiss who are responsible for this terrible season. Shame on you. I give this season a 3/10. It is a terrible.

So what do you do? Ask your colleagues for help? Use some of your own money to hire someone who is better than you for this night? Maybe just look up a recipe on the internet?

Nope! Grab some leftovers from the previous dishes in the fridge, throw them in the blender, forget to close the lid and waste half of it on the surrounding walls, put the mixture in the microwave, forget basic seasonings and just dump everything on a plate. No decorations or presentation because that would cost time and effort. Voila! You have created a dish. Not something crafted with love care or any thought but at least you brought up something.

The majority of the people "like" it. It is a product from a gala night so it has to be good right?

That's season 8 in a nutshell. Forget common sense, forget basic battle tactics and carefully crafted plans. Throw away your most interesting villain, forget what made the previous seasons so great and instead resort to over the top use of plot armor.

Congratulations. You have finished your series on a really, really bad note!

The show was built on rich themes, complex characters, and competing ambitions. Compelling, insightful dialogue in the early seasons helped paint a rich story world and internal worlds for our heroes and villains alike. But in the last few seasons, those brilliant attributes have been de-emphasised in favour of spectacle. Many of the show's other strengths — production design, the score, a lot of the acting, the visual effects, the cinematography, some of the directing — continue on formidably. But the interiority of these characters and their relationship to a complex and changing story world has been sorely neglected. It's staggering that a show with every luxury in terms of budget, time, and talent could choose with such hubris to spurn its origins. Daenerys is the hardest hit by this, presented in the end like a two-dimensional cardboard cutout rushed from complex protagonist to antagonist/villain in an episode and a half. Foreshadowing is not story or character development. Foreshadowing sows the seeds of character development, and with Daenerys, we needed to see the "good" seeds wither and the seeds of the "bad" flourishing before we could really see and understand her trajectory. Good tragedy can be tremendously cathartic and satisfying if we see the sheer inevitability of where people end up, as the product of their own decisions and those around them. Dany's arc could have been an epically tragic one, but that opportunity was squandered. We could be debating the choice to make this the end point — because choosing to have two "mad queens" consumed by power and greed while a bunch of men are presented as the moral compasses of the show, and the only ones worthy of wielding power, could be troublesome. But we can't even sufficiently do that because the exposition of that journey was so purely executed. That's to say nothing of all the interesting and profoundly relevant themes that the show has raised over the years, and which seasons seven and eight have treated with scant regard. We already knew war was hell. We knew people were flawed, often tragically. We knew this was not a happy ending story. So the only thing that makes the journey worthwhile (for those who still think story trumps spectacle) is seeing how those characters struggle with themselves, with each other, with their environments before they commit to the courses that lead them to their final destinations. Inadequate time was spent setting that up. That, unfortunately, will be the show's legacy. Doing full orders of seasons seven and eight at 10 episodes a season may have gone a long way to keeping the show coherent. But, unfortunately, it betrayed itself — and us. Expand

It just goes downhill from there and after already established, average season 7, the last one shows that you can hit the bottom - and very hard at that.

If their efforts on that front are anything like Season 8 GoT, they shouldn't be anywhere near that franchise either. But Disney is into ignoring fans and putting out hot garbage on a tight schedule that will make the most money for the least effort and talent spent, so these writers should fit right in.

There was conflict in nearly every scene, people were constantly negotiating, fighting, scheming, seducing etc. The multi-layered stories were constantly moving forward and there were often amazing twists and surprises. Key characters died. Some minor characters triumphed over major characters. Ultimately, it was about The Story. Now let's talk about this final Season 8. The show has descended into predictability, long silly speeches, and scenes with zero conflict / drama. Characters just explain the plot or tell us how they're feeling. Or crack so many stupid sarcastic comments. Worst of all, the show has been infected by the US political climate. How? In the first few seasons, women weren't portrayed as physically equal or superior to men in strength and combat skills, (and combat is absolutely central to the conflict in the stories). Yet, in the last few seasons, women are consistently physically superior to the best male warriors. Keep in mind there was no story event that altered physical realities of the world. But now, in Season 8, when a 5 foot tall skinny little girl announces she's going to engage in physical fight to the death with the most horrifying evil zombie warriors, we're supposed to just accept this. Ultimately, it feels like just another silly, sanctimonious SJW diatribe. Maybe it's more impotent rage about the 2016 election. In any case, the show has become a huge disappointment. Expand

This season is the most predictable, "plot armored" anticlimactic and badly written that I have ever seen. We no longer care when a character dies because the odds are very unbalanced. I wouldn't say Aryia hasn't been prepared for this moment but it felt somewhat meaningless. Why did Melisandra take off her necklace? Did she have to?
