Just remember these reviews from critics can vary on episode... most reviews being a one episode review... so don't ever take much stock in TV reviews. This episode was awesome, it had everything you would want from a GoT episode. Oh no... the Sand Snakes... They are awesome too... get over yourself.

    BAD:
It's a shame the series was edited to put the large set pieces at the end, instead of where they would have made pacing the best. For example, putting Cersei's big act in the final episode created big problems for the timing of events across the entire series. It made her storyline plod along - it only needed to be about 5 episodes long. Plus is created issues in other storylines - e.g. Vary's trip to Dorne takes 3 episodes, but his return to Mereen only takes 20 minutes.
Arya stark's story is another one that plodded along, then time-warped at the end of the series - again the editors wanted big events to occur at the end of the series, instead of an appropriate place for good pacing.
The Deus Ex Machina of the Battle of the Bastards - too much like a Lord of the Ring's cliche, which is a shame because the battle was by far the best one in the series.
    GOOD
It awoke story lines from the books that had been ignored - much to my delight.
Bran's story returns and is the most emotionally powerful part of the series.

Game of Thrones sixth season isn't without its flaws, John's resurection was very predictable and too many of Sansa's scenes felt like filler for example, but it still manages to pack in more jaw dropping scenes than any other TV show I can think of and is rarely not utterly entertaining. It’s fun to see the continuous journey of our beloved characters, good as bad ones. It’s one hell of a ride with many turns, and the scope have greatly gone bigger – there aren’t that many of the main characters left and the action is greatly superior. The plot continues to introduce new storylines, and it might be too many for the show’s own good but we love it don’t we. It’s one hell of a show, but it might have some small fragments of predictability, expositions, pacing issues & rushed moments throughout some of the episodes. Add the fact that it might have become a bit fan-service-ish & stretched out yes; well it’s not flawless! But let’s not forget what makes the show so great. It’s the characters -- their interactions, personalities and journey through this world that really matters. It’s the continuation we all wanted – especially the season finale! Can’t wait for season 7!

It's way better than season 5 with many of the characters storylines actually progressing, yet it does feel that the creators of the show seemed to have ran out of idea as to what to do with certain character - so they resort in killing them.

That for me was a bit of a departure from the shows logic of death ( for the pleasure of others, for the good of the realm, because they were main character). This season saw a lot of characters die, and for the first time I feel (from a story point of view) that it made no sense.

I look forward in seeing what will come next for this show, but I do hope they learn from past mistakes and remember where it all started.

Wow, what a season this has been, but then again you can say that with the past seasons. Besides it's flaws (mostly from writing and character decisions). This season has been great and really pushes of what it can manage to pull off, while you watch it at home for free.

This isn't anything new, but hey they great every year. Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, and Iwan Rheon. The rest of the cast are all great and really add something to their characters. But the real stand out this season (for me) was Kit Harington. Ever since the first season and now, both Harington and the character has come along way. You can see a difference when you think back. Becoming more stronger and legendary, deserving the title "King of the North".

Season 6 contains possibly one of the best episodes that has ever shown on TV. It terms of scale and visuals, it's pretty cinematic and nothing quite like it. Those episodes are "Battle of the Bastards" and "The Winds of Winter". Where can I even begin, it's everything that makes great TV, just put on a grader scale. The acting, cinematography, directing, sound, etc. All of these are too good to fully express with words.

My problems with the season is mostly to do with writing and certain character decisions that doesn't make sense for the characters to make. The scene where Arya gets stabbed repeatably around the stomach area by an assassin, which in the universe of the show (or reality itself) that would mean death. But somehow after a couple of bandages and some soup, shes fine. Like what? And why is she out in the open strolling around when she knows very well someone is out to kill you who can take different appearances. It was pretty stupid and out of character.

While Jon Snows death in the last season was shocking and unexpected, but now it kinda feels like a cheap gag at the viewers. After months of waiting and leaked photos of behind the scenes service on the web, it became very obvious he wasn't dead. While not as insulting as the cliff hanger from The Walking Dead, although it doesn't feel like something they would pull off. I guess it's for viewers and ratings, but you don't need to do that since it's one of the most popular TV shows on right now. I didn't read the books and I'm not sure if it was in the book or not. If it was then I take back my criticism. And that's really it for problems.

Overall rating: Bring on season 7.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Game of Thrones is a series that requires fans to weather the bad times, while giving them very few good ones to relish along the way; so judging what's to come on just this fragment of material would be unfair. It takes its time stirring the pot before the steam lifts enough to reveal what has really been cooking.

The story in this season maybe got less unpredictable moments than the others, but it isn't like all of these moments are gone like some people said, in this season there are events that have moments that i didn't saw coming at all, the Martin brain is still in the show, you can still feel his hand there. The story, yes, have moments for us to praise and cheer in some moments, but i needed that, after season 5, i needed moments to cheer with the characters once again, for me that was on point.
The production quality keeps getting better each season, it is so impressive, there are moments here that are simply better than a bunch of blockbuster movies that we have nowdays, this show broke the barrier of visual quality between cinema and tv shows, it is really striking. The costume of the characters are great, the difference that you see between the suit of people from the red keep and the river run are really noticiable, not just that difference is good, but also the costume now got so wonderful, the armour that Jaime uses or the suit of Cersei, that is all so beautiful, you can feel the power even by the way that they dress. The Cgi in this season was completely unbelievable, it was perfect, the cgi of monsters or battles, that was simply perfect.
They completely resolved another problem that i had in previous seasons, wich is the action, in this season the fights and the battle was so great, the battle of the bastards was simply one of the best medieval battles that i have ever seen, not because the strategy, that was actually pretty simply, but the battle itself, how they at first filmed only Jon point of view, making we see the battle from an inside point, how everything is complex, without understanding what exactly is going on around you, we could see the war just like Snow could, that was perfect, this sequence could made my emotions get at the point of my skin and really feel every moment there, that was just fantastic.
Lena Headey is just perfect, she can expose and be badass without saying one word, saying the she is great is redundant, but for real, she is one of the best in acting here. Bella Ramsey was so nice, she was just a kid, but the way that she said what she had to, was so good, some people surely disliked that, but for me, it was dope, like a kid bringing to grown men how life really is, i loved it. Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner were dope great here, they could bring a big development and change in their characters, they both are really different now. Emilia Clarke is definely better in this season, she is getting more comfortable with her character, her faces and mouths things that was so little expressives before, now are notably better. Natalie Dormer as Margaery did a really nice work, she was great in showing concern in some moments, also as calm, knowing that something gonna happen and getting nervous and trying to be calm. Jonathan Pryce did a really good job, he was convicted in what he was saying, he was very convincing.
There are some story lines that didn't got very clear here, what they were doing, in wich direction they will follow, but still, they will take their time and explain things. Bran line was a bit strange, but soon or later it will start making sense, then i will have a better opinion in it. But personally how they work with the chess this season was very good. The Daenerys situation in other seasons wich was so stopped, and nothing happens, here it is way more interesting, maybe convenient, but it was way better. King's Landing story was very nice here, they flipped the religious story into a really nice political move, and had a insanely dope ending. Jon story got more clear, and also had a direction that we can see what is happening. These are definely the main things in this season, and for me it all worked. There are some side moments, with Aria and Jaime for example, some of them are kind of a moment for fans, but it worked out, it was dope and made sense.
The Light of the Seven sequence is another cinematography moment that deserves to be remembered, that whole sequence was great, the image composition and the song together, all of the converting into a twist that worked really nice.

Season 6 is certainly a step up from season 5, and while overall it does not top the fourth season, the last two episodes of this season are unquestionably in my top 5 favourite episodes in this show so far. This was an incredible season with shocking revelations and mind-blowing unpredictability.

I certainly hope some of the critics that thought S6 of GoT was the weakest of the show wrote those reviews mid season, because the final two episodes of S6 are as epic and top notch television as it gets, from acting, directing, music, etc. Certainly two of the best GoT episodes ever and I would argue two episodes that should at least be up there for some of the best in TV all time,I certainly hope some of the critics that thought S6 of GoT was the weakest of the show wrote those reviews mid season, because the final two episodes of S6 are as epic and top notch television as it gets, from acting, directing, music, etc. Certainly two of the best GoT episodes ever and I would argue two episodes that should at least be up there for some of the best in TV all time, packed with impactful and perfectly executed scenes every 5 minutes.

Slow, disjointed, with some characters seemingly have the ability to teleport from one part of the world to another. Some of the visual scenes were stunning as usual and the acting held up well against a poorish script. The biggest downer given the end of series 5 and the threat of the white walkers and the epic impact they were about to have on the 7 kingdoms is completely forgotten for the first 8 episodes and remains so with only the odd scene and passing reference, The Queen of Dragons we thought had an invincible army but somehow this seems to have fallen apart faster than the average British government. Overall you cannot watch this without knowing the makers are milking the franchise by 80% of air time given to minor side plots, minor characters and scenes that don't add anything to the backbone of the plot and in several cases don't fit or have any useful purpose to this series or presumably the next. Game of Thrones's comeback was awesome, amazing plots, awesome characters and again awesome dialogue and writing, Dan Weiss and Benioff do some nice works on converging the story-lines and i am okay with it, no way they would squish 1000 pages of a book in 10 hours, they do a fine work with what they can, and GoT is their gold mine. Wish a better season than the last one.

Easily containing Game of Thrones' worst narrative decisions, Season 6 is, at best, a slowburn that culminates in the best two episodes of the entire series; at worst, it's a plodding and uneven transitional season.

When Robb betrays his promise to marry one of Frey's daughters he pays for it with his life. Jon made the choice to let the wildlings pass and was killed for it. And then they brought him back from the dead. That's when the series died. Expand

Season six of Game of Thrones is written like crap, except that the final two climatic scenarios of this season is what made it satisfyingly good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now that season 5 of Game of Thrones is over, who is excited for the premiere of season 6 on Sunday?

To clarify, this 5/10 rating is only for the first episode of the new season [update: Nope, it'll work for the whole season two. What an efficient season of fan service. I can't wait for the next book]. I give Game of Thrones overall a 9/10. It is my favorite thing on television outside of The Americans and Rick & Morty.

Seriously, nearly everything included in this premiere could easily have been included before the end of last season. The recap of previous happenings goes on rather long and the episode itself is already rather short, yet we still bounce around between a ton of characters. The score is excellent and the location shots and cinematography rather stunning, but Emilia Clark still ruins Daenerys for me, especially in comparison to the book character. She is written so much weaker and helpless in the show. Sansa, Brienne and Cersei are the highlights here and they are quite good, but it felt like this episode should have run another 20 minutes.

The first 3 season premieres of this show were wonderful. The fourth was probably the weakest and the fifth wasn't terribly better than that one, but both were well worth watching, each far more than this latest entry.

With the exception of a couple scenes which included Sansa or Cersei, all of which probably could and should have been included before last season's finale alongside the Sand Snakes' coup, there wasn't much going on.

Jamie didn't even finish sailing before they had already seemingly sent Trystane back to Dorne freely! For no reason! Apparently, everyone hated Doran and Trystane except his elite guard who falls from one strike. And the show tries to fill this plothole by releasing the note sent to Doran by Jamie online... Give us a break.

Davos does a number of things that are completely out of character and don't make much sense. Remember how much he hates Mel and wishes to kill her for the betterment of all? Isn't he curious how Stannis died or what happened to Shireen? Think she just lies and says they were murdered by the Boltons? Doubtful right? And why does he feel compelled to both guard Jon Snow's dead body and stay in Castle Black after discovering it?

Speaking of Mel, all them blood magics from Asshai contrast the Lord of Light stuff pretty well, by the way, and a little reveal of her powers is a cool scene, but didn't surprise me nor rock my world enough to end an episode strongly.

I am glad we finally got Brienne to unite with Sansa and I like Theon's redemption so far. I thought it was criminal that Bran has been out for a season and we didn't even get him on screen.

Meanwhile, Arya is still blind and in training. Will she warg to "see" so she can do something to regain her sight, similar to in the books? I dunno, but this felt okay for the premiere when I thought she would have another scene before the end of the episode.

Pretty subpar episode even if were smack in the middle of the season given the lack of content, inconsistencies and microscopic plot progression

Predictable plot, badly paced scenes, constant feeling of indignation, lack of heroes to cheer, bad endings of initially good storylines. I think Martin's continuation of the storyline will be more interesting, then this one...

The acting from the lead cast was stupendous especially from Emilia Clarke, Maisie Williams, Peter Dinklage, Sophie Turner, Kit Harington, Gwendoline Christie, Iwan Rheon, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kristofer Hivju, Nathalie Emmanuel, Ellie Kendrick, Jonathan Pryce, and Alfie Allen. The acting from the supporting cast was terrific especially from Diana Rigg, John Bradley, Jerome Flynn, Jacob Anderson, Gemma Whelan, Bella Ramsey, Conleth Hill, Faye Marsay, Max von Sydow, Daniel Portman, Hannah Murray, Indira Varma, Carice van Houten, Michiel Huisman, Essie Davis, Jessica Henwick, and Keisha Castle-Hughes. The battles this season were remarkable and awesome especially the battle between Jon Snow, the Night's Watch, the Wildlings, the Mormont Army, and the Knights of the Vale against Ramsey Bolton and the Bolton Army and the battle between Daenerys Targaryen, Drogon, Rhaegal, Viserion, and the Dothraki against the Masters. The writing, storytelling, and plot this season was phenomenal. The visual effects were very impressive this season especially Drogon the Dragon, the Wildfire explosion in the Great Sept of Baelor, and Daenerys Targaryen walking out of the burning Dothraki shack. The makeup effects were excellent especially Leaf and all of the Children of the Forest, the Night King, the undead army of wights, Wun Wun the Giant, and Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane. The sets and scenery were splendid this season just like they are every season and this season especially the Cave of the Three-Eyed Raven. The music was great especially the music featured in episodes 9 and 10. The last scene was great and cool seeing Daenerys with a huge army and her three dragons by her side. Game of Thrones is still my 2nd favorite show of all time. Expand

A decent season. Not as good as the first ones, but considering that it has no book material to be based on, I think it's pretty well done. Yes, it does have its ills, but a good part of them had origin in Season 5, however, another good part of them hadn't, precisely the problems of serious plot holes and poor writing that sadly would only get worse with the following seasons. Thankfully, it has some truly great moments that saves us from a cringe overdose, and the last two episodes are among the best in the entire show. Brilliant pieces of work there.
I genuinely think this is the best season of the second half of the show. I actually enjoyed it, and as a book reader this is perhaps a guilty pleasure of mine.

In short, it was an episode of Game of Thrones, a show with little interest in or aptitude for self-editing. The aspects that worked were no better-written or more artfully shot than those that fell slightly flat; they simply had a sense of urgency that was, even by the standards of a show whose premieres are slow going, was absent elsewhere.

Surprise has its place, and isn't mandatory in a table-setting episode like this, which did its best to catch us up on most of the characters (while skipping over the likes of Littlefinger, Sam, and Hot Pie) and show us where their stories may be headed after all that went down at the end of last season.

The bodies still pile up in a sprawling episode full of ongoing storylines, but there's a definite sense that there's hope for some of these hopeless sorts. ... [Arya's] journey, as a young woman in a severely patriarchal society, has always been extremely compelling, but with every season, she gets more agency and strength, and becomes even more captivating.
