The sixth season of Game of Thrones suffers a few ailments along the way, losing by far the comparison with the previous three. But it remains and we are always talking about a high quality product. Episode 6x09 "Battle of the Bastards" is beyond perfect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Season 6 is just another A+ season and it just keeps getting better with each season. The acting from the lead cast was stupendous especially from Emilia Clarke, Maisie Williams, Peter Dinklage, Sophie Turner, Kit Harington, Gwendoline Christie, Iwan Rheon, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kristofer Hivju, Nathalie Emmanuel, Ellie Kendrick, Jonathan Pryce, and Alfie Allen. The acting from the supporting cast was terrific especially from Diana Rigg, John Bradley, Jerome Flynn, Jacob Anderson, Gemma Whelan, Bella Ramsey, Conleth Hill, Faye Marsay, Max von Sydow, Daniel Portman, Hannah Murray, Indira Varma, Carice van Houten, Michiel Huisman, Essie Davis, Jessica Henwick, and Keisha Castle-Hughes. The battles this season were remarkable and awesome especially the battle between Jon Snow, the Night's Watch, the Wildlings, the Mormont Army, and the Knights of the Vale against Ramsey Bolton and the Bolton Army and the battle between Daenerys Targaryen, Drogon, Rhaegal, Viserion, and the Dothraki against the Masters. The writing, storytelling, and plot this season was phenomenal. The visual effects were very impressive this season especially Drogon the Dragon, the Wildfire explosion in the Great Sept of Baelor, and Daenerys Targaryen walking out of the burning Dothraki shack. The makeup effects were excellent especially Leaf and all of the Children of the Forest, the Night King, the undead army of wights, Wun Wun the Giant, and Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane. The sets and scenery were splendid this season just like they are every season and this season especially the Cave of the Three-Eyed Raven. The music was great especially the music featured in episodes 9 and 10. The last scene was great and cool seeing Daenerys with a huge army and her three dragons by her side. Game of Thrones is still my 2nd favorite show of all time. Expand

Easily containing Game of Thrones' worst narrative decisions, Season 6 is, at best, a slowburn that culminates in the best two episodes of the entire series; at worst, it's a plodding and uneven transitional season.

Game of Thrones's comeback was awesome, amazing plots, awesome characters and again awesome dialogue and writing, Dan Weiss and Benioff do some nice works on converging the story-lines and i am okay with it, no way they would squish 1000 pages of a book in 10 hours, they do a fine work with what they can, and GoT is their gold mine. Wish a better season than the last one.

A decent season. Not as good as the first ones, but considering that it has no book material to be based on, I think it's pretty well done. Yes, it does have its ills, but a good part of them had origin in Season 5, however, another good part of them hadn't, precisely the problems of serious plot holes and poor writing that sadly would only get worse with the following seasons. Awful show, at this point it just wallows in vulgarity and pointless violence and cringeworthy "Strong Wahmen" cliches. The writers really had no idea what to do once they lost the grounding of GRRM's writing and turned it into a pile of Hollywood stereotypes. Sad!

This season of Game of Thrones for me was able to fix a situation that i had in pretty much all of the other seasons, wich is a lot of moments that didn't made the story go on, sometimes it felts that things was just stuck, but in this one pretty much everything feels flowing, in every episode the story moves and it never stops, that's great, there isn't one bad episode that i can think of, for me all of them were very nice, and in all of them the plot runs.
The story in this season maybe got less unpredictable moments than the others, but it isn't like all of these moments are gone like some people said, in this season there are events that have moments that i didn't saw coming at all, the Martin brain is still in the show, you can still feel his hand there. The story, yes, have moments for us to praise and cheer in some moments, but i needed that, after season 5, i needed moments to cheer with the characters once again, for me that was on point.
The production quality keeps getting better each season, it is so impressive, there are moments here that are simply better than a bunch of blockbuster movies that we have nowdays, this show broke the barrier of visual quality between cinema and tv shows, it is really striking. The costume of the characters are great, the difference that you see between the suit of people from the red keep and the river run are really noticiable, not just that difference is good, but also the costume now got so wonderful, the armour that Jaime uses or the suit of Cersei, that is all so beautiful, you can feel the power even by the way that they dress. The Cgi in this season was completely unbelievable, it was perfect, the cgi of monsters or battles, that was simply perfect.
They completely resolved another problem that i had in previous seasons, wich is the action, in this season the fights and the battle was so great, the battle of the bastards was simply one of the best medieval battles that i have ever seen, not because the strategy, that was actually pretty simply, but the battle itself, how they at first filmed only Jon point of view, making we see the battle from an inside point, how everything is complex, without understanding what exactly is going on around you, we could see the war just like Snow could, that was perfect, this sequence could made my emotions get at the point of my skin and really feel every moment there, that was just fantastic.
Lena Headey is just perfect, she can expose and be badass without saying one word, saying the she is great is redundant, but for real, she is one of the best in acting here. Bella Ramsey was so nice, she was just a kid, but the way that she said what she had to, was so good, some people surely disliked that, but for me, it was dope, like a kid bringing to grown men how life really is, i loved it. Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner were dope great here, they could bring a big development and change in their characters, they both are really different now. Emilia Clarke is definely better in this season, she is getting more comfortable with her character, her faces and mouths things that was so little expressives before, now are notably better. Natalie Dormer as Margaery did a really nice work, she was great in showing concern in some moments, also as calm, knowing that something gonna happen and getting nervous and trying to be calm. Jonathan Pryce did a really good job, he was convicted in what he was saying, he was very convincing.
There are some story lines that didn't got very clear here, what they were doing, in wich direction they will follow, but still, they will take their time and explain things. Bran line was a bit strange, but soon or later it will start making sense, then i will have a better opinion in it. But personally how they work with the chess this season was very good. The Daenerys situation in other seasons wich was so stopped, and nothing happens, here it is way more interesting, maybe convenient, but it was way better. King's Landing story was very nice here, they flipped the religious story into a really nice political move, and had a insanely dope ending. Jon story got more clear, and also had a direction that we can see what is happening. These are definely the main things in this season, and for me it all worked. There are some side moments, with Aria and Jaime for example, some of them are kind of a moment for fans, but it worked out, it was dope and made sense.
The Light of the Seven sequence is another cinematography moment that deserves to be remembered, that whole sequence was great, the image composition and the song together, all of the converting into a twist that worked really nice.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now that season 5 of Game of Thrones is over, who is excited for the premiere of season 6 on Sunday?

To clarify, this 5/10 rating is only for the first episode of the new season [update: Nope, it'll work for the whole season two. What an efficient season of fan service. I can't wait for the next book]. I give Game of Thrones overall a 9/10. It is my favorite thing on television outside of The Americans and Rick & Morty.

Seriously, nearly everything included in this premiere could easily have been included before the end of last season. The recap of previous happenings goes on rather long and the episode itself is already rather short, yet we still bounce around between a ton of characters. The score is excellent and the location shots and cinematography rather stunning, but Emilia Clark still ruins Daenerys for me, especially in comparison to the book character. She is written so much weaker and helpless in the show. Sansa, Brienne and Cersei are the highlights here and they are quite good, but it felt like this episode should have run another 20 minutes.

The first 3 season premieres of this show were wonderful. The fourth was probably the weakest and the fifth wasn't terribly better than that one, but both were well worth watching, each far more than this latest entry.

With the exception of a couple scenes which included Sansa or Cersei, all of which probably could and should have been included before last season's finale alongside the Sand Snakes' coup, there wasn't much going on.

Jamie didn't even finish sailing before they had already seemingly sent Trystane back to Dorne freely! For no reason! Apparently, everyone hated Doran and Trystane except his elite guard who falls from one strike. And the show tries to fill this plothole by releasing the note sent to Doran by Jamie online... Give us a break.

Davos does a number of things that are completely out of character and don't make much sense. Remember how much he hates Mel and wishes to kill her for the betterment of all? Isn't he curious how Stannis died or what happened to Shireen? Think she just lies and says they were murdered by the Boltons? Doubtful right? And why does he feel compelled to both guard Jon Snow's dead body and stay in Castle Black after discovering it?

Speaking of Mel, all them blood magics from Asshai contrast the Lord of Light stuff pretty well, by the way, and a little reveal of her powers is a cool scene, but didn't surprise me nor rock my world enough to end an episode strongly.

I am glad we finally got Brienne to unite with Sansa and I like Theon's redemption so far. I thought it was criminal that Bran has been out for a season and we didn't even get him on screen.

Meanwhile, Arya is still blind and in training. Will she warg to "see" so she can do something to regain her sight, similar to in the books? I dunno, but this felt okay for the premiere when I thought she would have another scene before the end of the episode.

Pretty subpar episode even if were smack in the middle of the season given the lack of content, inconsistencies and microscopic plot progression

Wow, what a season this has been, but then again you can say that with the past seasons. Besides it's flaws (mostly from writing and character decisions). This season has been great and really pushes of what it can manage to pull off, while you watch it at home for free.

This isn't anything new, but hey they great every year. Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, and Iwan Rheon. The rest of the cast are all great and really add something to their characters. But the real stand out this season (for me) was Kit Harington. Ever since the first season and now, both Harington and the character has come along way. You can see a difference when you think back. Becoming more stronger and legendary, deserving the title "King of the North".

Season 6 contains possibly one of the best episodes that has ever shown on TV. It terms of scale and visuals, it's pretty cinematic and nothing quite like it. Those episodes are "Battle of the Bastards" and "The Winds of Winter". Where can I even begin, it's everything that makes great TV, just put on a grader scale. The acting, cinematography, directing, sound, etc. All of these are too good to fully express with words.

My problems with the season is mostly to do with writing and certain character decisions that doesn't make sense for the characters to make. The scene where Arya gets stabbed repeatably around the stomach area by an assassin, which in the universe of the show (or reality itself) that would mean death. But somehow after a couple of bandages and some soup, shes fine. Like what? And why is she out in the open strolling around when she knows very well someone is out to kill you who can take different appearances. It was pretty stupid and out of character.

While Jon Snows death in the last season was shocking and unexpected, but now it kinda feels like a cheap gag at the viewers. After months of waiting and leaked photos of behind the scenes service on the web, it became very obvious he wasn't dead. While not as insulting as the cliff hanger from The Walking Dead, although it doesn't feel like something they would pull off. I guess it's for viewers and ratings, but you don't need to do that since it's one of the most popular TV shows on right now. I didn't read the books and I'm not sure if it was in the book or not. If it was then I take back my criticism. And that's really it for problems.

Overall rating: Bring on season 7.

It's way better than season 5 with many of the characters storylines actually progressing, yet it does feel that the creators of the show seemed to have ran out of idea as to what to do with certain character - so they resort in killing them.

That for me was a bit of a departure from the shows logic of death ( for the pleasure of others, for the good of the realm, because they were main character). This season saw a lot of characters die, and for the first time I feel (from a story point of view) that it made no sense.

Slow, disjointed, with some characters seemingly have the ability to teleport from one part of the world to another. Some of the visual scenes were stunning as usual and the acting held up well against a poorish script. The biggest downer given the end of series 5 and the threat of the white walkers and the epic impact they were about to have on the 7 kingdoms is completely forgotten for the first 8 episodes and remains so with only the odd scene and passing reference, The Queen of Dragons we thought had an invincible army but somehow this seems to have fallen apart faster than the average British government. Overall you cannot watch this without knowing the makers are milking the franchise by 80% of air time given to minor side plots, minor characters and scenes that don't add anything to the backbone of the plot and in several cases don't fit or have any useful purpose to this series or presumably the next. I really don't know what the big fuss is with The Games Of Thrones. It is a very average show with a couple of exciting moments in the whole series after 6 seasons. Still got nothing on Breaking Bad. That was a roller coaster of a show, unlike this show. Lots of boring episodes throughout 6 seasons. Thank god there is only ten episodes per season.

The entire season felt rushed, many battles were implied instead of shown(I'm guessing they ran out of money), an enormous amount of stuff felt like it was shoved in to surprise people but it just felt pathetic.

The mixup between murder porn scenes, which have reached an overload by this point, and much more reserved character scenes is abominable, you spend 20 minutes watching people getting murdered left and right and then you shift to samwell tarly and his awkward family reunions that don't even matter at all to the main storyline.

Besides the editing and time spent on characters vs time spent on axing people and things, good job on the return of forgotten characters like Osha, who honestly considering her screen time, really didn't need to come back, or pointless murders where the emotional element is completely absent.

I could count the number of ways in which this season was horrid, but I haven't got 500 000 characters, so let's just say this: it feels like a fanfiction. A really, really crappy fanfiction of GoT.

To illustrate, let me remind you of something and then spoil something new: In Season 1(or 2, or 3), when Cersei wanted to kill someone, she'd make sure for him to get too much to drink and get skewered by a boar, or she had them discreetly assassinated, poisoned, or better yet she maneuvered so her enemies would infight. The complexity of the intrigue was what made GoT exciting, fun and feel like a real cohesive world filled with tons of awesome characters.

Here, and this is spoilers, she literally shoves a regiment of wildfire caskets under the Great Sept, then blasts them with Tyrells, members of the small council, and the entire Faith Militant standing above, setting fire to a huge portion of the city, destroying the entire standing government, killing all the heirs of a great House, and essentially showing that she will go to any length of massacre to get away with her crimes. And you know the best? Right after committing arson, destruction of national monuments and mass slaughter, she crowns herself queen! How? On what legal basis? Apparently, the basis of having killed everyone else that could claim the throne or contest the claim in the city at that moment.

Spoilers end here, and I'm pretty sure that now, it's best for GoT to also end here. I have not seen a series this great fall this low in a long, long time, possibly ever. I sincerely hope that it ends quickly, because by now a generally awesome series is damaged completely beyond repair, and it was already bad in season 5.

Game of Thrones is a series that requires fans to weather the bad times, while giving them very few good ones to relish along the way; so judging what's to come on just this fragment of material would be unfair. It takes its time stirring the pot before the steam lifts enough to reveal what has really been cooking.

I always loved the Game of Thrones, but had started to lose patience with it a little in Series 5. But series 6... well its going to be a long year wait till the next shortened series arrives. I simply can't wait. The highlights were the end of episode 5, episode 9 gave us the best battle scene since Saving Private Ryan and the climax of the series was immense. Loved It. Thank you HBO.

Season 6 of Game of Thrones is faster-paced and juggles with leaner storylines than previous seasons. This results in a more action-packed, visceral 10 episodes that is packed with twists, turns and plenty of fan service.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

But besides some mistakes, that are not that awful(except for Dorne, which is really disappointing) the show is going in the right way, with the daenerys forces starting to plan their attack on Westeros and Jon Snow doing a thousand things in the north.

It feels like a simplified version of what should've happened with predictable story telling, and quick and random character "developments". I mean season 6 was with no doubt better than season 5, but i can't help but get angry at the writers when they are given this huge world that has many colorful characters that can really make the show feel much more grand, but instead choose to go with the quick CW-esc way out of things. The final two episodes saved the season for me i guess, even though it has it's own problems. The season was overall just good, i felt like i only cared for the Sansa and Jon/ King's Landing/ Bran story lines this entire season. I absolutely can't stand Denaerys's story line, nor her character, and what pisses me off the most is when we can finally have moments that might interest me like a bigger civil war fight with the whole masters thing going on the entire season...instead we just skip it with a single shot of the Dothraki riding in, and a few shots of the dragons burning a ship. We could of had moments like Dany sailing out of Mereen/ Dany passing through Valyria/ Dany reaching Dorne/ Dany talking to Olenna and Elaria and making a pact/ Olenna going to Highgarden to rally the Tyrell fleet from whoever is ruling Highgarden right now, instead of ALL OF THAT, we just skip it all (in the same episode i may add) and just show Dany on a ship sailing with dornish and tyrell ships from Dorne to king's landing. Like that could've been a season's worth of material at most, but they skip all of that cause dan and dave are so full of themselves and are so eager to finish this show in 13 episodes... and that just proves on why the decline of the show's quality is happening, and that also shows how Dan and Dave clearly need G.R.R.M to help them through this massive story, and it's undeniably obvious that they needed him this season. I'm done with my review but I just want to make this clear, since Dany is already in Westeros that means MONTHS have passed in the story, and if Dany managed to move continents in that period of time, i will audibly shout at the screen if I see Bran still trying to get to Winterfell in the next episode. That would be just cheap ass writing at it's very best. Expand

While there still may be lots to unfold with the season or two, the show eventually begins to simplify itself - a huge plus that will help viewers on track with all that's going on in real-time. I won't divulge any spoilers but I must say that there are some VERY good episodes toward the later part of this season and includes, in my mind, the best final two episodes in the show's history that brilliantly set up next year's seventh season. The thing you'll need to be keen on is lineages and nuance as the story unfolds. I nearly missed very important bits of information in the final two episodes because I've been watching this show as it has come out. With all that has gone on and the show's lack of reinforcing back-stories, I had to rewatch and investigate what was significant about certain parts of the show, only to realize that there are some major plot thickening moments. I'm very excited for GoT going into season 7. That doesn't happen without a good season 6. If you've been begging for action, you'll get your fill. If you're begging for the seemingly random vantage points to narrow in focus, you'll also get your chance (though you see that more as a foreshadowing than actual story progression in this season). I enjoyed these 10 episodes more than the last (season 5) and think that most people will agree that have been following along with the series. If you're tired of it all... there's not a lot that can be done to sway your mind. HOWEVER, those that rated the entire season months before the June 26, 2016 finale graded with only a smaller fraction of the episodes being available and cannot speak to the entirety of the season. Don't be fooled by those that can't exercise their patience and see the bigger picture unfold episode by episode. Anyone grading in April saw a maximum of 2 episodes and need to go slap themselves in the face for judging an entire season on 20% of the product. SHAME! SHAME! SHAME! Expand

It's a shame the series was edited to put the large set pieces at the end, instead of where they would have made pacing the best. For example, putting Cersei's big act in the final episode created big problems for the timing of events across the entire series. It made her storyline plod along - it only needed to be about 5 episodes long. Plus is created issues in other storylines - e.g. Vary's trip to Dorne takes 3 episodes, but his return to Mereen only takes 20 minutes.
Arya stark's story is another one that plodded along, then time-warped at the end of the series - again the editors wanted big events to occur at the end of the series, instead of an appropriate place for good pacing.
The Deus Ex Machina of the Battle of the Bastards - too much like a Lord of the Ring's cliche, which is a shame because the battle was by far the best one in the series.
    GOOD
It awoke story lines from the books that had been ignored - much to my delight.
Bran's story returns and is the most emotionally powerful part of the series.

After a rather lacklustre Season 5 I was excited but anxious heading into Season 5, and with a timidly but enjoyable enough first episode things weren’t looking great again. Luckily, despite trawling itself through mud at some points this season brings some of Game of Thrones most intense and memorable moments.
Characters in this season seem to progress in what they’re doing at a great pace, which is greatly appreciated considering last years plodding (Sad travelling Tyrion anyone?). Whilst Daenerys may still just be a narrow eyed public speaker most of the time, her story is more enjoyable. Arya’s storyline gets a little ludicrous but overall brings Arya back to the one we loved from before.
Whilst some twists and turns in this season may have been in plain sight before they happened they still haven’t lost their significance, and there are still plenty of twists you don’t fully see coming.
Season 6 has easily been the grandest in its spectacle, with stunning visuals, brutal violence, compelling character performances and moving music, Season 6 provides an incredible viewing experience. Episode 9 and 10 are an extreme achievement in TV history, with Miguel Sapochnik creating some stunning imagery and in episode 10 combining his shots with a intense score to create with of the best first 20 minutes to a TV episode ever.
If you can get around the fact that the storylines don’t happen at the same time (so that you understand people don’t teleport…) and get through a few blips in the script (ARRYYYAA) then you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see one of the best season of Game of Thrones to date. Whilst I would not rate it above Season 4 or Season 1, I would put it about on level or just above Season 3.
A fascinating viewing experience almost non-stop, and a finale that you can actually feel more than happy with (Walking Dead, take some tips mate).

It has been an emotional experience, and seeing all of this without prior knowledge from the books makes it all the more special. Episode 5 was one of the only times I have ever been devastated by a character, and it wasn't even a major character. This season has been FIRE compared o season 5 , and so far its on par with season 4 and 3 ( my favorites). EDIT: THE LAST TWO EPISODES WERE SOME OF THE BEST TV I'VE EVER SEEN. Holy cow the battle was amazing and the cinematography adn directing was so captivating. The finale was probably my favorite episode of the series due to the 20 minute lead in music and Lena Heady's amazing portrayal as Cersei. This season has moments that will leave you speechless, some that may bring a tear to your eye and some parts you may of seen from a mile away. But most GoT fans will enjoy this season. Expand

While season 6 did maintain the slow pace of the previous season early on, It quickly began to push things forward. The results are far more satisfying than season 5. It actually does a lot to get the series back on track (not that it strayed too far in the first place).

The strength of this season is that it really sets up the endgame. All the pieces are coming together and the end is in sight. With some truly incredible moments, the always artful direction, big reveals, and many additions to the ever-growing body count, season 6 packs huge shocks and moments that will stand as some of the best this series has.

It won't be long until we see all these characters come together in some way. Season 6 makes that clear. It does so by delivering satisfying and emotional moments with it's 10 episodes. It's last two episodes in particular bring back that sense of shock and danger the first 4 had. It takes a bit, but once it gets going it doesn't stop. It keeps ramping up until it's conclusion and sets the bar for season 7 incredibly high. The wait will be almost unbearable. Especially given the promise that it will be even better than this one. Possibly even the best yet.

Regardless season 6 delivers. To make it matters evern more impressive it does so almost entirely without guidance from George R.R. Martin. Having moved past the novels, the show branches out into this new territory with a huge sense of confidence. You barely even notice they aren't following the novels anymore. I myself almost forgot when writing this review. Season 6 is just all around excellent. A step up from the admittedly disappointing season 5. This is no time to give up on Westeros. It's stories are still going strong.

Battle Of The Bastards saw the truly epic battle between Jon and Ramsay's army which left viewers with the satisfying death of Ramsay Bolton who will go down as the best villain Game of Thrones ever had. Then we had the most recent episode Winds Of Winter.

Winds Of Winter is without a doubt the most jaw dropping and sensational hour of television i have ever witnessed. From the Wildfire killing everybody in the Sept of Baelor to the assassination of Walder Frey it was pretty hard to pick what made this episode so special. We also got to see something that fans have been asking for since the show first started. Is R+L=J true? Well, i can happily confirm that this is true and that we finally know that Jon is a Targaryen.

The scene that confirms this is so emotionally exhausting as people have been waiting for years to see if this was true and the payoff was incredible.

Overall, season 6 is without a doubt one of my favourite seasons on this show as it is both powerful in writing and beautiful in visuals.

No season of Game of Thrones will ever be as good as the first, but this one is close. The only part that was bad was Arya's storyline. Just take a peek on Reddit and see all the people just as confused by her story as I was.

Other than that, great stuff, especially the finale.

This season has all the good elements of Game of Thrones. However, Dorne is really badly written, but it's screen time is shrunk to almost a single episode. Also the series seems to have dropped realistic time flow.

It’s fun to see the continuous journey of our beloved characters, good as bad ones. It’s one hell of a ride with many turns, and the scope have greatly gone bigger – there aren’t that many of the main characters left and the action is greatly superior. The plot continues to introduce new storylines, and it might be too many for the show’s own good but we love it don’t we. It’s one hell of a show, but it might have some small fragments of predictability, expositions, pacing issues & rushed moments throughout some of the episodes. Add the fact that it might have become a bit fan-service-ish & stretched out yes; well it’s not flawless! But let’s not forget what makes the show so great. It’s the characters -- their interactions, personalities and journey through this world that really matters. It’s the continuation we all wanted – especially the season finale! Can’t wait for season 7!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is becoming so neat. Not neat in a good way, but neat in the sense that somehow everything magically ties together, and/or works out perfectly for the good guys. Benjen shows up again as blatant fanservice (just in the nick of time to save Bran, of course), Daenerys is suddenly able to control her uncontrollable dragon out of nowhere because the plot requires it, Sam steals a valuable sword without his controlling father or anyone else noticing, and earlier in the season we've had that terrible tent burning scene with Dany, Jon Snow coming back to life despite the fact that the logical conclusion to character arc should've been his death, Yara managing to steal a whole fleet because apparently no one on the entire Iron Islands was guarding it. Not to mention that characters are suddenly able to kill their own family members left and right without repercussion, as seen with Ramsay and the Sand Snakes. Didn't this use to be a grave offense, something that you couldn't just do? Isn't that why Joffrey, for instance, didn't just kill Tyrion, despite the fact he was the king?

I don't remember the earlier seasons breaking their own established rules to such a ridiculous extent. The reason they moved along so slowly was because characters couldn't just walk up to each other and kill each other without consequence, and the reason they felt tense and exciting was because you truly didn't know who would bite the bullet the next time. Does anyone honestly feel the least bit afraid for Dany, Jon Snow, Tyrion or Bran? You just know these guys will pull through and go on to do the most boring, heroic stuff you can imagine, probably in that huge 'final battle' that everyone keeps pining for, that shouldn't logically happen because GoT isn't (or at least didn't used to be) Lord of the Rings.

I could be wrong about all of this and the show could surprise me, but I'm not holding my breath.

Shame!

This season was especially notable for its weird sexual politics. They wrecked the best female characters by taking multifaceted and interesting women and insultingly turning them into one-note Mary Sues (Arya, Sansa, Brienne, and especially Daenerys) who spend all their time smirking and snarking at people. Dany especially does almost nothing but smirk through half-closed eyes in every scene she's in, it's pretty comical once you pay attention to it.

Meanwhile the male characters are all either defenseless cripples (Tyrion, Varys, Theon, Doran), servile bootlickers of women (Daario, Jon Snow, Littlefinger, Podrick, Grey Worm, Samwell), or both (Jorah, Jaime). Honestly the only likable guy on the show this season was Ramsay Bolton, since he actually seemed to be having fun and acting on his own volition. So the women are all trying to be men (with hilarious results) a bunch of the men literally have their balls cut off, and the only people who could find this mess entertaining are nerds who are very confused about human sexual dimorphism.

They should make spin-off shows about Bronn picking tavern fights and Margaery making power plays in the royal court with charm and guile, because everything else on this show sucks now.

That is part of the reason why Game of Thrones was so amazing for the first 4 seasons, it didn't care if you didn't like it. Now that George RR Martin isn't as big of a part of the show, the writers seem to be trying to make it more palatable to the masses. It is as if the writers are glad that they finally got rid of Martin and can now start making a canned and pre packaged show....business as usual. I hardly watch TV anymore just for this reason. And am I seriously the only one who thinks the actress who plays Daenerys is obnoxious? It would take a few pages to explain my point of view on this but she drives me crazy. The battle for the Wall was hard because you wanted people on both sides to win. Ramsay cannot command just because he says so. A few misguided, but strong characters (for example from the Karstarks) might have helped this. But that is just one line. EVERY story thread has this problem now. Honestly, unless you're willing to put in the work and include and update aggregate reviews for each and every episode, than do not review TV show's seasons until they come to a conclusion!

Or hell, try this. Have a Metacritic aggregate score for each episode of a TV show. If that were the case, I would say that a 73 rating for Game of Thrones, Season 6, Episode 1 would be fair. It was a table-setting episode that was forced to address the many cliffhangers left at the end of Season 5, and thus felt rushed in places.

But the thing is that, since the first episode, Season 6 of Game of Thrones has been undoubtedly its best season yet. The pace has ramped up, major events are taking place in every episode, and the ending to the series is within sight. The characters and storylines that are secondary to the final conflict are being culled, and by Season 7 we should have White Walkers beyond the Wall, dragons in Westeros, and the city of King's Landing in ruins.

It is a travesty that a site as highly relied upon for critical response to media as Metacritic will have such a profoundly inaccurate score for this season of Game of Thrones, all because it's first episode was moderately worse than the rest of the season. A new system for reviewing TV seasons is needed, and is needed as soon as possible.

As far as the music is concerned, it's very entertaining and it highlights the suspense. It's very touching too, especially during Hodor's very last scene. I didn't cry, but I was so gutted !

Its not perfect however, the dialogue while good is not as sharp as we're used to seeing but that's to be expected as we're now almost fully liberated from George's material (while George has years to write the books the writers only have a few months to pen a script), the sand snakes also still look like they belong in another show and the show also seems to be forgetting the strong anti-war message in the books by its over glorification of violence.
But to conclude, overall its been excellent and its Game of Thrones seems to be back to its very best, its miles ahead of season 5 and it still has the potential to be the best season yet.

Game of Thrones is not what it once was. There is no intelligent, complicated and exciting dialogues as in the first 4 seasons. To generate an impression, they believe that they should kill someone by surprise. It looks like a show of many. It has become very predictable, exaggerated, forced and tedious.

Update for my 4 rating : The last two episodes (3 & 4) have been so good I had to re-evaluate this season entirely, when Game of Thones is on it's the best television show I've ever seen

In short, it was an episode of Game of Thrones, a show with little interest in or aptitude for self-editing. The aspects that worked were no better-written or more artfully shot than those that fell slightly flat; they simply had a sense of urgency that was, even by the standards of a show whose premieres are slow going, was absent elsewhere.

Surprise has its place, and isn't mandatory in a table-setting episode like this, which did its best to catch us up on most of the characters (while skipping over the likes of Littlefinger, Sam, and Hot Pie) and show us where their stories may be headed after all that went down at the end of last season.

The bodies still pile up in a sprawling episode full of ongoing storylines, but there's a definite sense that there's hope for some of these hopeless sorts. ... [Arya's] journey, as a young woman in a severely patriarchal society, has always been extremely compelling, but with every season, she gets more agency and strength, and becomes even more captivating.
