The reviews for this season leave me scratching my head. Shame on "professional" publications for reviewing a whole season based on one episode and on metacritic for allowing this. Not really here to give a rating. Solely to mention that it is absolutely ridiculous that these 'season' ratings appear. As they are only reviews of the season premiere. Put season reviews only in there or make a review-section of episodes I don't know. Not a butthurt GOT-fan just something that generally annoys me.

Bad reviews after one episode skew the rating for future dude. Episode 2 was great so this is the rating I'm throwing on here. I suppose giving it a 10 after two episodes is just as bad?

I don't think some people actually understand what can be done during a season premiere.

I just finished watching episode 4 and must now ask: Has Game of Thrones ever been so good? It's hard for me to say because this is the first season I didn't know most of what was going to happen (having read the books and the show now surpassing them). So for me, I think so far, yes.

Each episode this season has shocked me, thrilled me, made my heart bleed, changed the 'game' in drastic ways; and make me love and hate characters and love to hate characters and love to love characters all at once. Or love/hate them more. Or just hate. /Stare Ramsey. We thought Joffrey was bad? Seven hells.

I think the GoT and HBO teams have really got this season nailed down. The worst part of every episode is when the credits roll and another week of waiting begins. Unlike last season, the *major,* end-game storylines are coalescing at a rapid pace that was missing in parts of books 4 and 5 (and season 5), into something none of us can possibly predict. In other words, it's heading towards its conclusion. And given what we know and what we guess, it's going to be one hell of an ending, whether any of the fan theories are right or not (I try to stay away from fan book/show theories).

Spoilers start here. Don't tread further.
-The first episode served as most GoT (and any show's) first episode does, reestablishing where everyone is and what's happening with them. Despite this, it did a much better job over the Season 5 'character catch-up' because it didn't feel like a catch-up episode, but rather a continuation of the story in the last moments of Season 5-- they managed to catch us up while still having very significant things happen within the episode, things that felt organic while catching us up.
-Seeing the backstory with Lyanna and Ned is great. It's interesting that Ned has allowed a rumor about killing the Sword of the Morning. If you believe a popular theory (to which these flashbacks are leading up to)-- well, for one, we'll finally get an answer that was asked in season 1, episode 1; but also, we find that Ned's not quite as honorable as he seems if he let the rumor fly (though I may be forgetting a time he attempted to dispell the rumor?).
-Tyrion, in the dungeon with the dragons-- wow. Brilliant, and I can't wait to see where that relationship with Tyrion and the dragons is taken.
-The last moment of episode 2, while predictable, was also great. I like that they didn't just throw the answer at us immediately. I like that Mellisandra struggled with her faith and it had to be Davos to prod her to try what she didn't believe she could do.In her moment of struggling for faith, while we've already been told she's seen Jon in the Winterfell fighting. We silently root her on while we wait for her to agonize over whether to try the revival.
-Sealing Olly's fate was tragic when considering the arc of his story. Allister, while wrong, "died an honorable death" in the end.
-The end of episode 4 was nearly as powerful as the end of season 1 when her dragons emerged from the flames with her; and the scene certainly mirrored and paid tribute to that earlier scene, completely in the context of the Dothraki. What an amazing moment, 180, for a storyline that was starting to feel stagnant. In book and show, you begin to wonder just how competent Dany is once she's trying to juggle 3 kingdoms and make a plan for invading Westeros. But she once again showed us, like she did with the masters of the Unsullied, that she is unflinching, if calculated, on her road to what she believes is her fate (now with our favorite Little Person trailing along).
-But Dany, just wow. She killed the Khal, making her the new Khal; she killed every Khal in that tent, making her one of the most powerful Khals in known GoT history.
-From what I understood, Arya's scene to mean that going to the fountain will kill anyone (obviously) who drinks from it, but not kill someone who is "nobody". It begs the question: What if she'd been faking and was still Arya (she still has the buried sword, Needle, after all).
-In general: Wow. 4 unimpeachably amazing episodes in a row; not that ‪‎Game of Thrones‬ hasn't accomplished this before, but most of the best episodes are saved for last. Can't wait to see what that means for the rest of the season.

-Speculation: Is Shaggydog dead? We know Rickon's a little nutty; Ramsey mentions in the letter. Is this part of another Stark power we have yet to see?
Book Spoiler: Nymeria is confirmed alive
Conclusion: Anyone paying close enough attention knows that we're suddenly hurtling toward the conclusions of these several storylines that are about to collide.
-The Knights of the Vale (sworn to the Vale Prince Robin and now "uncle" Peter now reside) are finally doing something after an entire book series of doing almost literally nothing. Heading to the wall-- to what end, Peytr?
-Snow heading to Winterfell with Wildlings; Peter meets up on the
-Lannister/Barratheon/Tyrells working together, everything to soon collide.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall I enjoyed the season premiere. Certainly got the ball rolling and it's hard to judge the first episode on it's own merit without the rest of the season to give it context.

But, I am a little bit concerned with some of the dialogue - Cersei talking to Jaime was a great scene and felt like authentic GoT, but some of the lines in other scenes just stuck out like a sore thumb for me. Also, is it necessary for Jorah to check his wrist ever time he's on camera? Just makes the situation feel dragged out.

Despite those few criticisms, it's shaping up to be another interesting season, there was genuine sense of dread during the final scene and I can't wait to see what follows - hopefully the show is able to maintain the standard of previous seasons.

This season has all the good elements of Game of Thrones. However, Dorne is really badly written, but it's screen time is shrunk to almost a single episode. Also the series seems to have dropped realistic time flow.

Metacritic needs to stop doing TV reviews until they figure out how to handle the fact that, unlike a movie, album, or video game, the content cannot be judged solely on the first episode or two of a 10-episode or more season. Honestly, unless you're willing to put in the work and include and update aggregate reviews for each and every episode, than do not review TV show's seasons until they come to a conclusion!

Or hell, try this. Have a Metacritic aggregate score for each episode of a TV show. If that were the case, I would say that a 73 rating for Game of Thrones, Season 6, Episode 1 would be fair. It was a table-setting episode that was forced to address the many cliffhangers left at the end of Season 5, and thus felt rushed in places.

But the thing is that, since the first episode, Season 6 of Game of Thrones has been undoubtedly its best season yet. The pace has ramped up, major events are taking place in every episode, and the ending to the series is within sight. The characters and storylines that are secondary to the final conflict are being culled, and by Season 7 we should have White Walkers beyond the Wall, dragons in Westeros, and the city of King's Landing in ruins.

It is a travesty that a site as highly relied upon for critical response to media as Metacritic will have such a profoundly inaccurate score for this season of Game of Thrones, all because it's first episode was moderately worse than the rest of the season. A new system for reviewing TV seasons is needed, and is needed as soon as possible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly this has been one of the strongest seasons of the show so far. It has been an emotional experience, and seeing all of this without prior knowledge from the books makes it all the more special. Episode 5 was one of the only times I have ever been devastated by a character, and it wasn't even a major character. This season has been FIRE compared o season 5 , and so far its on par with season 4 and 3 ( my favorites). EDIT: THE LAST TWO EPISODES WERE SOME OF THE BEST TV I'VE EVER SEEN. Holy cow the battle was amazing and the cinematography adn directing was so captivating. The finale was probably my favorite episode of the series due to the 20 minute lead in music and Lena Heady's amazing portrayal as Cersei. The BIG reveal happened and it was so very satisfying I teared up. These last two episodes paired with episode 5 "The Door" has catapulted this season was above season 5, and that's why this needs to be at something higher than a 73. You cannot as a reputable reviewer place a season's grade based off the first episode. This season was beyond amazing and I wouldn't be surprised if the show swept the Emmys like last year. I personally cannot wait until season 7, and I hope George RR Martin releases the next book soon so I can experience both of these amazing stories. Expand

The strength of this season is that it really sets up the endgame. All the pieces are coming together and the end is in sight. With some truly incredible moments, the always artful direction, big reveals, and many additions to the ever-growing body count, season 6 packs huge shocks and moments that will stand as some of the best this series has.

It won't be long until we see all these characters come together in some way. Season 6 makes that clear. It does so by delivering satisfying and emotional moments with it's 10 episodes. It's last two episodes in particular bring back that sense of shock and danger the first 4 had. It takes a bit, but once it gets going it doesn't stop. It keeps ramping up until it's conclusion and sets the bar for season 7 incredibly high. The wait will be almost unbearable. Especially given the promise that it will be even better than this one. Possibly even the best yet.

Regardless season 6 delivers. To make it matters evern more impressive it does so almost entirely without guidance from George R.R. Martin. Having moved past the novels, the show branches out into this new territory with a huge sense of confidence. You barely even notice they aren't following the novels anymore. I myself almost forgot when writing this review. Season 6 is just all around excellent. A step up from the admittedly disappointing season 5. This is no time to give up on Westeros. It's stories are still going strong.

After a rather lacklustre Season 5 I was excited but anxious heading into Season 5, and with a timidly but enjoyable enough first episode things weren’t looking great again. Luckily, despite trawling itself through mud at some points this season brings some of Game of Thrones most intense and memorable moments.
Characters in this season seem to progress in what they’re doing at a great pace, which is greatly appreciated considering last years plodding (Sad travelling Tyrion anyone?). Whilst Daenerys may still just be a narrow eyed public speaker most of the time, her story is more enjoyable. Arya’s storyline gets a little ludicrous but overall brings Arya back to the one we loved from before.
Whilst some twists and turns in this season may have been in plain sight before they happened they still haven’t lost their significance, and there are still plenty of twists you don’t fully see coming.
Season 6 has easily been the grandest in its spectacle, with stunning visuals, brutal violence, compelling character performances and moving music, Season 6 provides an incredible viewing experience. Episode 9 and 10 are an extreme achievement in TV history, with Miguel Sapochnik creating some stunning imagery and in episode 10 combining his shots with a intense score to create with of the best first 20 minutes to a TV episode ever.
If you can get around the fact that the storylines don’t happen at the same time (so that you understand people don’t teleport…) and get through a few blips in the script (ARRYYYAA) then you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see one of the best season of Game of Thrones to date. Whilst I would not rate it above Season 4 or Season 1, I would put it about on level or just above Season 3.
A fascinating viewing experience almost non-stop, and a finale that you can actually feel more than happy with (Walking Dead, take some tips mate).

Battle Of The Bastards saw the truly epic battle between Jon and Ramsay's army which left viewers with the satisfying death of Ramsay Bolton who will go down as the best villain Game of Thrones ever had. Then we had the most recent episode Winds Of Winter.

Winds Of Winter is without a doubt the most jaw dropping and sensational hour of television i have ever witnessed. From the Wildfire killing everybody in the Sept of Baelor to the assassination of Walder Frey it was pretty hard to pick what made this episode so special. We also got to see something that fans have been asking for since the show first started. Is R+L=J true? Well, i can happily confirm that this is true and that we finally know that Jon is a Targaryen.

The scene that confirms this is so emotionally exhausting as people have been waiting for years to see if this was true and the payoff was incredible.

Overall, season 6 is without a doubt one of my favourite seasons on this show as it is both powerful in writing and beautiful in visuals.

There are a lot of positives here, most of the storylines are moving at jet pace which is welcome. Jon, Sansa, Dany and Bran's storylines have been particularly compelling. And while Arya is still floundering in Braavos. There is potential and a lot to look forward to as well.
Its not perfect however, the dialogue while good is not as sharp as we're used to seeing but that's to be expected as we're now almost fully liberated from George's material (while George has years to write the books the writers only have a few months to pen a script), the sand snakes also still look like they belong in another show and the show also seems to be forgetting the strong anti-war message in the books by its over glorification of violence.
But to conclude, overall its been excellent and its Game of Thrones seems to be back to its very best, its miles ahead of season 5 and it still has the potential to be the best season yet.

It feels like a simplified version of what should've happened with predictable story telling, and quick and random character "developments". I mean season 6 was with no doubt better than season 5, but i can't help but get angry at the writers when they are given this huge world that has many colorful characters that can really make the show feel much more grand, but instead choose to go with the quick CW-esc way out of things. The final two episodes saved the season for me i guess, even though it has it's own problems. The season was overall just good, i felt like i only cared for the Sansa and Jon/ King's Landing/ Bran story lines this entire season. I absolutely can't stand Denaerys's story line, nor her character, and what pisses me off the most is when we can finally have moments that might interest me like a bigger civil war fight with the whole masters thing going on the entire season...instead we just skip it with a single shot of the Dothraki riding in, and a few shots of the dragons burning a ship. We could of had moments like Dany sailing out of Mereen/ Dany passing through Valyria/ Dany reaching Dorne/ Dany talking to Olenna and Elaria and making a pact/ Olenna going to Highgarden to rally the Tyrell fleet from whoever is ruling Highgarden right now, instead of ALL OF THAT, we just skip it all (in the same episode i may add) and just show Dany on a ship sailing with dornish and tyrell ships from Dorne to king's landing. Like that could've been a season's worth of material at most, but they skip all of that cause dan and dave are so full of themselves and are so eager to finish this show in 13 episodes... and that just proves on why the decline of the show's quality is happening, and that also shows how Dan and Dave clearly need G.R.R.M to help them through this massive story, and it's undeniably obvious that they needed him this season. I'm done with my review but I just want to make this clear, since Dany is already in Westeros that means MONTHS have passed in the story, and if Dany managed to move continents in that period of time, i will audibly shout at the screen if I see Bran still trying to get to Winterfell in the next episode. That would be just cheap ass writing at it's very best. Expand

Beautifully written and expertly directed, it's as clear as day that the team is getting more and more skilled by the season. This season is much better than season 5 was from the start.

The subplots finally feel as though they're moving towards something concrete. The Sansa/Jon, Ramsay, Bran, Tyrion, and surprisingly enough, even the Dany subplots are substantial.

I was afraid the show had run out of steam... not yet! Episode 4 delivers! I actually shed tears of epicness! I'm impressed with the moral depth and sophistication of the show, and that it can supply so many layers to keep a full range of people entertained.

Great episode, such an incredible story with amazing writing by David and Dan and also George RR Martin. So far so good. Great premier full with suprises and action. What more would you want for a premier. This is truly the greatest show of all time.

In short, it was an episode of Game of Thrones, a show with little interest in or aptitude for self-editing. The aspects that worked were no better-written or more artfully shot than those that fell slightly flat; they simply had a sense of urgency that was, even by the standards of a show whose premieres are slow going, was absent elsewhere.

Surprise has its place, and isn't mandatory in a table-setting episode like this, which did its best to catch us up on most of the characters (while skipping over the likes of Littlefinger, Sam, and Hot Pie) and show us where their stories may be headed after all that went down at the end of last season.

The bodies still pile up in a sprawling episode full of ongoing storylines, but there's a definite sense that there's hope for some of these hopeless sorts. ... [Arya's] journey, as a young woman in a severely patriarchal society, has always been extremely compelling, but with every season, she gets more agency and strength, and becomes even more captivating.
