Can't help comparing the acting talent for several of the lesser roles to Lynch's version. But on the other hand it treats the mystic side of Dune far less carelessly.

However, the production values are just not up to snuff for this kind of thing; it feels like a play, not a scifi epic. The camera work can be lazy too, except when there's an important melee fight (separate action director at work?), which are actually done quite well.

Don't let this discourage you from watching the sequel, Children of Dune, which is far better put together in every way.

If you've never read the book, this is basically a "lawrence of arabia in space" sort of story. This version is a longer rendition of DuneIf you've never read the book, this is basically a "lawrence of arabia in space" sort of story. This version is a longer rendition of Dune than the 1984 movie (and it's more accurate to the book). For the most part, the length is really required to try and help cover the details. Dune is a political type of story, and so having time to pick up on the personalities and situations is vital to understanding what's going on. Most of the book's plot comes out well, even the more mystical parts with the worm life cycle and such have explanations of what's going on when it becomes important.

It's the sort of story that you have to sit down and want to be interested in to enjoy. It's long enough that you can lose track of things a little unless you're paying attention; so I wouldn't say it's a movie for everyone. If you like sci-fi stuff though, then give this a watch for sure.
