Forever is the first appealing show to come out in a long time. It doesn't lean heavily on non-classy gimmicks such as sex to promote a truly original supernatural twist on the age old premise of crime fighters. It's a good balance of action, story, and character development. Highly recommend it. I can only see it getting better and more intriguing as the season unfolds.

Rarely does ABC tv have such a fun new series. The actors may pull off the limitations ina basic tv show. Hope it only gets better. Ive watched the pilot twice impatiently waiting for the series to start.

While it seems we have way to many crime drama shows (being second only to reality TV), when pulled off well, they can be quite entertaining to watch.
    what I like about Forever:
His immortality. brought about by unknown forces, and viewed by the lead as a burden rather than a gift, it adds another dimension to the lead character while also giving story writers a lot to play with.
His relationships: from the mutual respect and attraction he and the cop, Jo, feel, to the amusing but not too-embarrassing-to-watch dealings with his assistant, to his, frankly, sweet father/son relationship with Abe, to the memories of Abigail. They flesh him out as a character, and they are also interesting, real feeling characters in their own right.
his deductive skills: this is what puts so many people off. they act like he is ripping on the idea of Sherlock Holmes. Well, i think that that point has legitimacy, but i also feel that it is overblown, and that he SHOULD be the detective he is. After living for 200 years, it makes sense that you would know things others simply don't, and see patterns in places others don't. when you take a very intelligent person, who is naturally observant and aware, and you give him 200 years to hone those skills, he SHOULD make Holmes look like an amateur.
his deaths: 4 episodes in, and he has not died nearly as much as you'd expect, given the big deal his immortality is treated with. In episode 4, for example, he did not die at all, nor even came to a point where it seemed he would. this shows me that the show cares more about the story than the gimmick.

I am personally of the opinion that this show is well written, well acted, and intelligent, and i would be VERY upset to see it get cut short. That may change. In another 4 episodes it is entirely conceivable that enough could change that I'd be ready to write this whole thing off, but somehow I doubt it.

I think one of the worst things that could happen for this show is if it is given the disgusting treatment 'Almost Human' was given, where it is allowed to run its first full season, and then just quietly killed.

Forever is an amazing show. It is well written, well acted, and leaves the viewer with a 'all is well' feeling reminiscent of shows from the 80's. All while being very entertaining. Ioan Gruffudd, Alana De La Garza, and Joel David Moore are excellent. This show follows firefly, Almost Human and other such shows into cancellation.

Shows like this being cancelled are mounting reasons I should take ques from everyone I know and do as they do...avoid watching every single new series. Wait for a few seasons to be aired and then watch them on Netflix. As more and more people do this; then we can all save $100 a month with no TV channels as they just air garbage trash shows like "Once upon a time" and master chef or the Amazing race.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After watching either Gotham or The Flash, I happen to come across "Forever". Now the only thing that kept me on my seat and watching the episode was because the main protagonist played as Mr.Fantastic from the Fantastic Four movie. Now while reading this, you can probably tell im a comic guy. I only watched 2 episodes, one where Henry tried to investigate an old lady from his past who died from falling off the stairs and recently a killer who is trying to mimic the Jack the Ripper. Honestly episode 6 got me hooked on the show. How he was able to find out who the killer was and surprising encountered, and got knifed but luckily an anonymous who carries the same immortal curse as Henry, killed him quickly before his partner can see him dead. Really interesting stuff , i'm hooked but im sad there's only 1 episode left, I hope they go for a 2nd season! Expand

    Cons
It does suffer from that odd staple "I got a secret and i must hide it at all cost" issue.
Don't get me wrong i understand why he hides it but still i hope it does not become the main focus of the episodes later i mean maybe a few but i would hate to see this become a show all about hiding his secret.
They make Dr. Henry Morgan seem a little to smart for being only (Spoiler)
250 years old I mean don't get me wrong you would get tons of knowledge from being that old but unless you have a high IQ (And he could but i don't think it's said yet) i don't feel he should be as smart as they made him.

It reminds me a little of The Highlander and various other shows that deal with immortals, however the twist of him being reborn into water reminds me of the Bible passage below. This could be a great focus for the show, but right now everything so vague it will become tiring quickly if writers do not beef it up soon.

As Jesus talked with Nicodemus, He said, “‘I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.’ ‘How can a man be born when he is old?’ Nicodemus asked. ‘Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, “You must be born again" (John 3:3-7).

The main problem this show has had so far is episode plots that are a bit subdued compared to the more personal plots involving the main character's history. The flashbacks he has are fascinating, and the character interactions and acting are very good, but I don't think that's an excuse for episodic plots that aren't as fascinating as they could be.

With hints of deep plots as well as fairly interesting episodic plots, this is a shoe-in for my watch list. I'd give it a 9/10, but because some idiot who clearly watched 15 minutes of the first episode gave it a 1/10, I've gotta compensate somehow.

Update: Rewatched the premiere and I have decided to change my score from 7 to 8

A little bit iffy upon first screening, but I can easily imagine this becoming one of the season's more enticing note. On a similar note, it could easily end up bombing for two reasons:

    A) Familiarity/Differences to Shows & Complexity
The premise is similar to "Body of Proof" (a good, well loved show that fell apart thanks to an odd schedule and lack of episodes per season) with a hint of "Sleepy Hollow" (about a man who comes back to life after 200 years). It's a medical drama and a future/past drama combined (a bit too complex for one show); interesting and decently fresh, but will it connect with audiences?

    2) Poor Timeslot
If I had to pick one time period in ABC's weekly primetime line up that is sure to bomb, I'd pick Tuesdays at 10/9c. Why? Since the 2012-2013 television season, every show to air in the timeslot was removed from the line up after runs of 13 episodes or shorter (after 5 or less in multiple cases). "Private Practice" (a show that had decent, yet diminishing ratings ended in January 2013 after a 13 episode 6th and final season), "Body of Proof" (one of my personal favorite shows, and one of the most watched shows of the year, was canned in May 2013 after wrapping a 13 episode 3rd and final season), were the two shows with higher ratings that folded (both in the same season). On the low viewership scale, "Lucky 7", "Killer Women" and "Mind Games" were cancelled after 2, 2 and 5 episodes respectively (all in 2013-2014 in the Tuesday at 10/9c timeslot). Unless "Forever" hits it out of the park with its first two telecasts (two night premiere that started 9/22), its a goner. The only thing that could save it is the fact that "Agents of S.H.I.E.LD." will move from 8/7c to 9/8c (as a direct lead in). In turn, "Selfie" and "Manhattan Love Story" (which lead the night) could sink the whole night.

Hopefully it won't have the same fate as other shows that came before it.

Second, we are treated to a series of flashbacks and are expected to care about character we never meet, instead of developing the characters the story actually has in the present.

Third, related to the second one. We have a big "antagonist" in the background, but he is barely related to anything that's happening.

The cases are fine. Maybe too mundane for an immortal character, but they are not bad.

Bottom line, it would have been great if it was about everything the main character lived (that we see in flashbacks). But as a cop/detective show, can't recommend.

I disagree that this show should be cancelled. It is one of the best shows on TV. I have watched since the beginning sand never been dissatisfied. They need to promote this show more. I'm keeping my finger crossed to see if it survives.

what a waste of almost one hour. Boring. Will probably not watch again. Yawn. Nothing original about the plot, and not realistic....Who lives for 200 plus years?

At first, Forever was better than I expected. They actually did something interesting with the immortality - he experiences the victims deaths himself to learn more about them. The wake up naked in the river thing is pretty stupid but whatever. He also uses his 250 years of life experience to do the whole Sherlock thing. It also starts an interesting season arc with an immortal enemy. TheAt first, Forever was better than I expected. You could just pick the good episodes and skip the boring generic ones like Castle but looking at the ratings all signs point to cancellation anyway. Expand

Terrific murder solving series, with an incredible (supernatural) twist for the main character, which really adds to the whole plot. The writers should really explore the metaphysical aspect a little more. Other than that, it is really enjoyable and entertaining !

Ioan Gruffudd, who plays Henry Morgan, a kind of gentle Cary Grant, does autopsies on bodies after murders and assists a female detective in her investigations. The inevitable romantic aspect was handled with extreme subtlety and barely advanced at all; in fact everything about the show was handled with a subtlety and care that is extremely rare in TV series.

Oh and there's one thing: Henry was born in the 1700s but stopped aging at age 35 after he was tossed off a slave ship when he came to the aid of a slave (I think it was a slave ship, not sure). Now, whenever Henry is killed he disappears and finds himself reborn (at the same age, 35) naked in the East River. He has a record as long as your arm for indecent exposure apparently, but this hasn't hurt his career with the NYPD. His son, Judd Hirsch, works in an antique shop in Greenwich Village (I think) where he sells all the things his dad has accrued over the years but no longer uses. The show indulges in flashbacks to former lives of Henry through the decades and centuries, showing scenes that have a bearing or are analogous in some way to the events of the ongoing action in the present day.

A wonderful show, and a truly bizarre cancellation.

Of course the TV show could of been 'The Mentalist', 'Elementary', ETC... You get your quirky outsider poking his head into cases being investigated by a strong female lead that is always employed by the FBI, CBI, ADT... what does it matter... Having a citizen interfere with evidence and witnesses makes any of these cases non prosecutable, therefore setting our scariest criminals free forever due to double jeopardy laws. Ironically for some reason none of these shows have figured this out yet. As for this show it is a very good show and also a good example of this genre. I hope it sticks around in this crowded market of crime shows we have going on right now.

As for this show all I have to say is "East River!!!". Does he get a tetanus shot every time his buddy brings him his clothes? I could not think of a worse body of water to reincarnate in. "Wait a minute!". It's a good thing he does not live near a sewage plant.... That would be a little awkward.

I think that Forever had a really interesting concept, but that the scope of the show was just too limited. I thoroughly enjoyed Ioan Gruffudd as a leading man and found the whole show to be incredibly watchable.

"Forever" summed up in one word: Boring. Yes, it really is. It is un-challenging. It feels like it's made for people who don't want to think much, since it tells the viewer everything. Like the co-writer of this series was Captain Obvious himself. Most of the cases and events are predictable. The more and more you watch, the worse it gets. The plot line doesn't follow a red line. It is just a very bad attempt to "americanize" good intelligent series like Sherlock, while failing everything that makes a good challenging series

Easy to watch and entertaining show. The history flashbacks are effectively woven into the contemporary stories. While no one lives for ever, it's entertaining, especially that he comes bake naked and in the water....

The show has a Sherlock mixed with Quincy, M.E. vibe. Back story is strange, but interesting. Intelligently written and well acted. Ioan Gruffudd is very charming in his role as Dr. Morgan. Alana De La Garza come across as a strong, yet down to earth female lead. Judd Hirsch is a nice addition to the show as Abe's character. I'm hooked!

I have written ABC re: their stupid idea of cancelling at least 2x's. Does anyone have a better way of reaching them? I mean why aren't our opinions important to them? Instead they listen to the 'critics' and not the audience. I hope this website counts for something! Re: Forever: At first I wasn't so sure about the male lead, but after just a few shows, I cannot imagine another actor in his place. His charisma carries the show! And the romantic sparks are there between the 2 of them as we are starting to see! ABC just cannot cancel this before we get to know what happens with the characters and Jo learns his secret!! Expand
