I watched this for the first time only a few months ago. I have known about it for quite some time and knew of its reputation. Honestly, I don't see what all the fuss was about and why this series stands out more than many other more superior ones. Still, I thought it was fun and I enjoyed it.

Visually it's pretty decent, not as high end as some Animes of its time are, but good enough.

I am very mixed with my thoughts on the characters. I loved every single one of them, except the main protagonist who comes across as extremely stupid for a majority of the series.

Story is, both good and flawed at the same time. FSN does have a very interesting premise that plays out as pretty decently, and yet also feels like they barely touch upon most of the lesser story arcs, leaving allot of loose ends or disappointing "conveniences" to rush the plot along.

    Overall:
Fate/Stay Night is not the Juggernaut of Anime as I was led to believe. But it's still pretty good and worth watching.

    Side Note:
FSN: Unlimited Blade Works is VERY worth watching and more or less is what FSN should have been (in my opinion.) Pretty much one of the best "What if?" scenarios I have ever seen. If you liked FSN but felt underwhelmed then this movie will give the closure you desperately seek

    ~ Story ~

Premise - Every decade or so Masters are chosen to enter the Holy Grail War these Masters summon servants but not just any old servants they summon Heroic Spirits such as King Arthur Princess Madea and etc. Servants can use special abilities known as Noble Phantasms and every servant comes from a certain class Saber, Lancer, Assassin, Berserker, Archer, Caster and Rider. Each Master has Command Seals which they use to control the Servants when they don't listen and that servant is forced to do whatever command that Master tells them. Each Master has 3 Command Seals if you use all the Command Seals you are no longer the Master of that servant.

The Fate Saga - A boy by the name of Shirou Emiya finds 2 Servants fighting at his school[Archer and Lancer]once he sees them he runs like a man has never ran before. Lancer chases him because spectators & witnesses of the Holy Grail War are to be killed no questions asked. Shirou is then stabbed by Lancer right through his weak pathetic heart and he waits there to die until a girl named Tohsaka feels sorry for the loser and decides to heal the poor bastard. Later Shirou is confronted by Lancer again this time he tries to fight back but he fails and once again he is about to be killed then a servant was summoned from out of the blue her name was Saber and she defended this poor defenseless loser Shirou from danger. To find out what happens next and to answer unanswered questions you may have like how she came out of the blue? Watch the show.

    ~ Beginning Characters ~

Shirou - The kind hearted self-sacrificing loser who gets himself into pointless situations

Saber - A knight class servant summoned to aid Shirou in the Holy Grail War

Tohsaka - A tsundere who has summoned an Archer Class summon to aid her in the Holy Grail War she becomes partners with Shirou.

Lancer - A spear wielding heroic Spirit whose master is unknown.

    ~ Animation ~

This Anime is from 2006 and its not that bad for its time although it could be better. The biggest down point of its Animation is of a CGI Dragon they failed at attempting to do in the Anime.

    ~ Soundtrack ~

This is probably the best thing about this show the OST is amazing but not entirely amazing just some songs that stand out from the rest, such as Unmei No Yoru and Emiya which make some moments really epic and sad sometimes.

    ~ Enjoyment ~

You will definitely enjoy most of the show and you might dislike some parts but most of it is enjoyable. Especially at the beginning when you have so many questions so many mysteries to uncover it hooks you with its amazing universe however it disappoints at the end but if your going to get into the Fate Series start with this one. After watching this you'll be ready for Fate/Zero which is way better than this and also the new 2014 Fate/Stay Night.

    ~ Would I Recommend This? ~

I recommend this for people who want to start the Fate Series if you hate this I understand but trust me Fate/Zero is so much better than this its a prequel to F/SN but watching the 2006 F/SN is a good way to get into the Fate Universe and Lore. If your just watching this just to watch an Anime then go ahead you'll be in for one hell of a ride.

    ~ To Avoid Confusion ~

Fate/Stay Night is from a Visual Novel and it has 3 Routes The Fate Route The Unlimited Blade Works Route and The Heavens Feel Route.

Fate/Stay Night 2006 covers the Fate Route.

UBW - Fate/Stay Night 2010 covers the Unlimited Blade Works Route in Movie Form.

Fate/Zero 2011 is the prequel to Fate/Stay Night which answers alot of unanswered questions from F/SN.

Fate/Stay Night 2014 covers the Unlimited Blade Works Route again but it is done in a 25 Episode Series and it has amazing Animation[oh my god]. The Movie is not as good as the Series but the Movie is still pretty **** amazing.

Fate/Stay Night Heavens Feel[Movie] - is based on the Heavens Feel Route its coming soon to theaters in Japan. No date for its release has been made.

    ~ Overall ~

**** Shirou **** Gilgamesh and **** You. I'm done. The score is 7 F/SN 2006 is awesome but not awesome its **** and its not **** I enjoyed it but it was flawed beyond redemption and its a big disappointment[To avoid spoilers I won't explain the flaws]. I recommend you to watch Fate/Zero and the 2014 Fate/Stay Night after watching this crap and if you want something else go watch Kara No Kyokai aka Garden of Sinners. Now be gone mongrels.
