The first two episodes (both directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi) contain bountiful helpings of action, as well as the war-movie cliches that have been part of the program’s formula since the beginning.

The show's biggest problem has been both scale and a sense of grounding. A cast clearly talented and a setting that is exceedingly-rare, Falling Skies works best when the action and the drama are not focused so much on alien technology but rather the human struggle and the visceral nature of the characters - something done quite well in this fifth season compared to the previous four. If you've stuck with the show thus far, you probably enjoy what you've seen. For me, Falling Skies had a huge, ambitious start but has likely been hampered by a cable TV budget. This has created a problem in presenting a believable alien invasion that feels as big and as threatening as it's meant to be. Even still, the characters and the story are good enough to move along episode after episode. There were numerous opportunities throughout the season to create a much deeper series, but every time the writers tried they ultimately pulled back in the same of safety. If the show hadn't been so by-the-book, we would have experienced perhaps one of the better action series on TV ever. I found season five to be one of the best seasons, if not THE best, of the Falling Skies run, simply because the creators did a good enough job wrapping things up. The unfortunate deal is that the show's final episode drums up a big fight that is undone by a whimper of a showdown. I had hoped for more of a Saving Private Ryan episode with a climatic finish given Spielberg's influence on the show. It never reaches that level and, when the final moments pass, I found the road to Washington and the battle to defeat the Espheni much more fulfilling than the results of the final battle.
