It could've been great, but instead of aiming for higher quality they went with adding all the woke stuff. Shame.

This show is really great. It's sorta like X-Files but with the supernatural stuff being more religious.

Think Goosebumps for intellectually-numbed adults. The transition from blossoming supernatural/psychological thriller hybrid to confused satire is painfully tangible, and the only reason I continued watching after Rose390 was to see how it ended so that I could be through with the show and the investment I'd already made up to that point. The writers are complete boomers, and it shows in the cringeworthy, minimal-effort way modern technology and the Internet are painted. The dialogue is implicitly misogynistic and racist at nearly every turn, if not just plain prejudiced. The writing only gets worse and worse, and what used to be a fairly believable, immersive world quickly dissolves with lazy, silly interactions, random awful actors popping in, and soapbox-tier twists. There are some genuinely tense and gripping moments, but these are outweighed and washed away by the number of times I wanted to go back and smack the pencil out of the writer's hand out of frustration. The end of the first season makes absolutely no sense and leaves so many more details unexplained and outright contradicted. I don't even know who the intended audience is, because that seems to shift with every episode. I am deeply disappointed, and I know the Kings could've done better, because there are some stellar moments and performances in here. I can only recommend watching this show if you go in thinking of it as a parody or college production. Expand

The most #woke **** ever.
This is comedy, not horror/suspense.

That's all there is to say, but I need 75 characters...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Halfway through the first season and this network horror show has managed to side step most of the tropes that go along with “family friendly” horror shows. Aside from CBS’s all access programming, Evil may very well be this tired and outmoded networks most interesting offering. That said, it’s still like being king of the rejects. I’ll give it an 9/10
(Instead of an 8/10) mainly because the negative user reviews seem to be motivated by the pseudo-ideological hangups of in-cell losers. Nevertheless, if you’re in to psychological horror or demonic-possession genres, than this is the show for you.

The lead actressJust finished the season finale, and I'm close to saying definitively that this is the most interesting, most progressive show on network television. I'm a little shocked that it wasn't nominated for emmmys/golden globes. The lead actress (from WestWorld) is phenomenal, and her two investigation partners are amazing. The character of Leland (Ben from Lost) is perfectly diabolical, and the demons/devils are understated and hilarious. It's the perfect way to balance the intensity of the subject matter, which can get heavy. Expand

Actually pretty good show. It has a vibe similar to haunting of hill house/bly manor and black mirror. A psychological thriller that makes you question what is real and what isn't.

Was a solid 8 or 9 until they felt the need to be political and woke. I get it, all white men are bad in your opinion. How about keeping your opinion to yourselves and just produce a quality show without trying to divide the country?

The main "bad guy" is an old white guy. Fine but then add the episode in which the bad white dude cheers on a group of "bad white youth" skyping about hurting women with the American Flag in the background as they chant "USA" "USA" "USA"

Each episode has a "woke theme of the week" which is not a universal "be good to you fellow man" type theme like in ST TOS but a controversial current political agenda that is NOT universal in nature. They do not present both sides but the producers personal point of view. I acknowledge the show is well done but the woke-ness was "force added" as it did not have anything to do with the weekly plot and could have been totally left out without impacting the show one bit. It was added for a reason. Sorry but no thanks!

Just finished season one.

This show has good ideas but a lot of character choices and writing in general that takes hilarious curves. It's a perplexing median between good and bad. You want to see what happens next because there's definitely creativity in this show, but not because its stellar acting or writing. I think the main characters started to settle into their roles better after 5-8 episodes, but I think this can honestly be said about any TV show.

Some of these reviewers seem to get hyper-triggered at any semblance of modern social commentary or perspectives. I can't even pick up on the "woke" stuff they're complaining about, so they're clearly not barraging you with too many socially modern perspectives.

One thing that caught me off guard is how the next episode would skip past stuff I was expecting to happen on screen after seeing the previous. You may feel like you accidentally skipped an episode at some points. But now that I'm used to it, I like that it expedites the pace and gets to the main course events faster.

There's frequent cringe, but I just go along for the ride because it's hilarious. One of my favorite lines: "It's a suicide instruction meme!"

It looks like S2 and S3 have even higher reviews, so maybe it sorts some things out..

No, the problem with the show lies in its very premise. A scientific view of the world is not compatible with a supernatural view of the world. And any attempt to marry both is going to do a disservice to either one or both of them. I can't speak for the religious side (although many reviews on here clearly seem to indicate that they don't approve, either), but to me, the bias against science became clear the minute when I grew increasingly annoyed at the reason-driven characters trying to rationally explain what was clearly supernatural. As a writer, you're free to create any reality you like. And that's fine. But if you try to use your fantastical version of reality to make claims about reality, you're no longer just telling a story. You're actively lying. And this show is lying. It pretends to discuss big themes, but all it really does is use the freedom of writing to confirm the convicitons the writers already have. If a character has a crisis of faith, the show's writers will develop the plot in a way that proves the character wrong for doubting. In reality, of course, things would play out differently. Expand

Great show.

There are many reviews trying to censor the themes portrayed in this show, but rest assured, it is them that is the problem, not the show.

The show is laid out much like a psychological thriller with demonic elements, intentionally leaving you wondering if what is going on is 'demonic' in origin or has a more realistic cause. The acting is strong and the overarching plot points are interesting, with an interesting foil that continues to develop well into the second season.

If you, unlike the others reviewing this show, can handle seeing a diverse cast investigate demonic (or maybe not) causes for real-world situations in a believable and engaging way, then this show is for you.
