Season 1 Review: Ingenious. ... It's an inspired, imaginative technique, making the slices of standup routines fit seamlessly into the therapy sessions, which is sort of what standup comedy is, anyway. [26 May 1995]

Season 2 Review: Watching Dr. Katz, with its jittery cartoon figures and deadpan monologue rants, is like experiencing a particularly giggly head trip. [5 Apr 1996]

Season 1 Review: A low-key, deadpan program that is very amusing and unusually engaging. [27 May 1995]

Season 1 Review: Taking the sitcom-shrink genre beyond "Frasier" and "The Bob Newhart Show," Comedy Central's "Dr. Katz" enters the hip, surreal realm of "The Simpsons." [27 May 1995]

Season 2 Review: The regular sessions with comedians... provide uneven, occasionally forced-sounding comedy. While the moments that feel improvised between Katz and his guest sparkle (the animation is drawn to match the dialogue), the parts that feel like the same routine we'd hear at a nightclub can be rather lifeless, despite the program's efforts to pep them up by animating some of the stories told. But Katz and his principal co-writer, Tom Snyder, have wisely made the heart of the show Dr. Katz's tenuous relationship with his unemployed, still-living-at-home, adult son Ben. [1 Dec 1995]

Season 2 Review: The show's sense of humor might be described as highbrow deadpan. What's uncanny is how the animation captures each performer's physical and verbal tics. [6 Apr 1996]

Season 1 Review: The material is high in laugh content, but sometimes the handy wonders of animation tempt the makers of "Dr. Katz" to illustrate jokes unnecessarily. [28 May 1995]

Season 1 Review: It's a classic cable move: save money by recycling old material. But it works. The nightclub shtik improves with Snyder's squiggly computer animation and Katz's deadpan running commentary. [19 Jun 1995]

Season 1 Review: "Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist" is not always as clever or as comically savvy as it thinks itself. ... Yet at this point, there are more than a few scripted inventions to keep the viewer tuned in and returning for future sessions. [25 May 1995]
