This was the show stripped back to its best: a smart, simple concept, engaging supporting characters, and the Daleks at their most menacing.

Eve of the Daleks succeeds as a contained piece, a 'locked-room' thriller, sagging only a little in the middle but gaining momentum in the final minute’s loop. Anyone who’s ever spent time wandering through the warren of a dimly lit storage facility will know how damned creepy they can be – even without a Dalek materialising at every turn.

It’s great, great stuff, elevated not just by the propulsive thrill ride of the episode’s timey-wimey plot, but also by how genuinely funny “Eve Of The Daleks” is too.

Doctor Who returns with a New Year’s Day special brimming with fast-paced jokes, hilarious slapstick and impeccable comic timing. Yes, there’s still a time loop, but it’s deployed far more effectively here and is mercifully easy to follow. We watch the same things happen over and over, yet things never feel boring. If anything, this is the most gripping Doctor Who has been in years.

Eve of the Daleks was Doctor Who at its purest: giddily imaginative, old-fashioned fun and just frightening enough.
