    Simply wonderful, a piece of British television history. Better in every way (except for the special effects!) than the 2005 reboot of the series. Intelligent, articulate science fiction, the unique central concept allows for many differing stories, locations and characters. True, it may be difficult to get into now, it's perhaps a series you had to be there for the first time around. But,Simply wonderful, a piece of British television history.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I grew up watching this as a kid in the 80s (mostly the Tom Baker reruns repeatedly because that's mostly what TVO played). Now I was surprised to recently learn that the original series ran from 1963 to 1989! I went back and started to watch it from the beginning. Who knew the Dalaks were around in 1963 and the Cybermen in 1965! The Dalaks pretty much looked like they do in the later series minus a cheesy mini satellite dish on their side. Their tactics have pretty much been the same since their second appearance way back then. By contrast The Cybermen seem to evolve all the time, in the original appearance they were actually mostly humanoid with a few artificial parts. I was shocked to learn what a rip-off of The Cybermen the Borg from Star Trek TNG were. The Cybermen made their first appearance invading the Earth from Nibiru (Planet X) and their catch phrase was "Resistance is useless! You will become like us!". Makes you say hmm, when 24 years later The Borg (another Cyborg race) is introduced on Star Trek TNG trying to invade Earth with the catch phrase "Resistance is futile! You will be assimilated!". In fact that Borg Episode was called "Q Who?" I really wonder if the "Who" was a reference to "Doctor Who" now... I'm surprised TNG wasn't sued...). Unfortunately, many of the old Doctor Who episodes were destroyed/damaged in a fire(?) at the BBC including the final part to the first episodes featuring The Cybermen.There is a version of the finale episode as a 3D animation which somebody made as school project out there featuring the original audio from the episode, if you can find it it is worth watching. But if you want to know how that one ends here's a spoiler: Nibiru falls apart because it is too unstable near Earths gravity and The Cybermen are linked to it so they have to up and leave before they conquer the Earth.

    Now back to Doctor Who 1963+: This show has intelligent plots that make you think right from the start. Using fear to control people, and stuff like that that even speaks to what is going on in the world today. Also, with excellent sets and decent plots and scary monsters a Doctor Who fan from any era should appreciate. An where the heck did they pull that theme song from in 1963? It was 20 years ahead of its time too, I mean not until Blue Monday by New Order in 1983 can I think of anything that even remotely sounded like it. I have only seen the first few years of the original Doctor Who series recently, and I watched the Tom Baker episodes many time as a kid, I remember those being really cool (at least to a kid lol) with great costumes but kind of cheesy special effects due to a low special effects budget. They were enjoyable though.

    I think Doctor Who was to the UK what Star Trek the original series was to America. A great sci-fi show but unlike Star Trek which was cancelled after 3 seasons, Doctor Who successfully became the longest running Sci-Fi tv series and for that it deserves a 10/10 imo.    … Expand

It is about a alien time Lord called the doctor who travels around in time and space in a blue police box from the 1960's. When the doctor dies he will regenerate into a new body. There has already been eight doctors in the classic series and in the new series there has been three so far.I order the dvd off Amazon.com all the time. I currently own 10. I will give a list of them and a brief description of each.

    1. The Ark (1963) First Doctor.
    The Doctor, Steven and Dodo land on a space ship in the future. Dodo spreads her cold among the humans and their fellow race, the Monoids. Their bodies are not used to it since it had been dealt with long ago so both races start to die. The Doctor finds the cure, the TARDIS gets pulled back seven hundred years in the future....

    2. The Mind Robber (1968) Second Doctor.
    The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe, after just barely escaping from a volcano, end up outside of time itself. Then the
    get to the land of Fiction, where they meet characters like Rapunzel and Gulliver. But someone keeps sending robots after them. Who is it?

    3. Doctor Who and the Silurians (1970) Third Doctor.
    The Doctor and Liz investigate a mining facility with UNIT and The Brigadier in tow. People have been killed in the mines by unknown creatures. The Doctor discovers that the Silurians, an ancient race that lived on earth when men were cavemen and uncivilized, live in the mines. And they want their planet back....

    4. The Sea Devils (1972) Third Doctor.
    Ships have been sinking at a naval base, and when the Doctor and Jo investigate, they find an ancient race called the Sea Devils are behind it. They, like the Silurians, want their planet back. And with the help of the Doctor's archnemisis the Master, they just might get it....

    5. The Green Death (1973) Third Doctor.
    The Doctor and Jo, while investigating a mine, discover giant green maggots living there. Meanwhile, the Brigadier discovers that Panorama Chemicals are filling the mine with waste, which caused the maggots to grow. But because of the waste, the maggots start to surface. And they are killing people....

    6. The Planet of the Spiders (1974) Third Doctor.
    Giant Spiders are being called from Metebelis 3, and they want a certain blue crystal the Doctor gave to No in the Green Death. When it gets mailed back to him, the Spiders know it. Sarah and Mike Yates investigate and find where the Spiders are coming from. The Doctor goes there after the Spiders get the Crystal, and meets the Great One, a huge spider that wants to rule the university but needs the blue crystal. The Doctor met his greatest challenge yet....

    7. The Ark in Space (1975) Fourth Doctor.
    The Doctor, Sarah and Harry land on a space ship and discovers it sabotaged. He then finds the humans oversleeping in their chambers. The Doctors discovers the Wirrn, long ago, sabotaged the ship, and their 'alarm clock'. Slowly the humans began to awake, but soon the Doctor finds the Wirrn still on board.

    8. The Sontaran Experiment (1975) Fourth Doctor
    The Doctor, Sarah and Harry go down to earth and find it deserted. Four men are stranded there and are trying to survive from a mysterious alien. The Doctor discovers a Sontaran is doing experiments on the humans, and reporting back to an entire fleet....

    9. Castrovalva (1982) Fifth Doctor.
    After regenerating, Nyssa, Tegan, and Adric flee from the Master. But when Adric gets captured by the Master and the Doctors regeneration is failing, Nyssa and Tegan take the Doctor to Castrovalva....

    10. Survival (1989) Seventh Doctor.
    The Doctor takes Ace back to Perivale only to find her friends missing. And a certain black cat is following them. Soon they get transported to the Planet of the Cheetah People, where the Master waits for them....

    I am an American Whovian who did not quite know much about the original run. When I did get the chance, I was really amazed. With Tom Baker being my favorite. I will rate Doctor Who 10/10.
