Everybody was waiting this show to be The Simpsons. This isn't the Simpsons. The characters are interesting and not plain once they are fully presented. The medieval world portrayed is amazing and the animation is beautifully performed.

Jokes don't stem from crazy antics or one liners but instead from characterization that develops over the season.
Take Elfo for example. He is basically a badass of an Elf. Yet when he gets to the human world he goes on to gradually realize just how innocent and gullible he really is. And he changes. He becomes increasingly manipulative of others and temperamental (In the entertaining way). That's the key to this. The characters are multidimensional and change.

The season does get of to a slow start. While I was amused, I didn't binge this until around the 5th or 6th episode. But that's not to say the episodes were bad. Rather, they have satisfying conclusions that don't make me feel a need to find out what happens next. A show like this would be better suited for a weekly release schedule.

This show is entertaining. But if you constantly try to compare it to the Simpsons or Futurama, you will be disappointed. Because this show, at it's core, is not like Futurama or The simpsons. It is far bloodier and dare-I-say sexier than those. It's not a pure comedy. It's an adventure show.

If you're looking for the same kind of 2-jokes-a-minute comedy as Futurama or Simpsons, you will be disappointed. If you're looking for something to just kick back and enjoy while eating a pizza, this is the show for you.

I'm looking forward to the future of this series. The world evidently has a ton of thought and lore put into it and I can't wait to find out more about the Demons.

I bet that by the time of it's third season, Disenchantment will have a rabid fanbase of conspiracy theorists. Might as well get on the bandwagon now.

All in all, a decent show with great world building and fleshed out characters. Not binge-worthy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show depends too heavily on ongoing one-joke character gags: a demon who's always saying on-the-nose evil things, a drunken Tomboy of a princess, a slob King with a Brooklyn accent. This is old. It goes back to the '40s, and it really wasn't that funny even then. There are other, more interesting ways to subvert expectations, but Disenchantment seems to go for all the easy ones. The characters are so defined by their stereotypes, that you can't really get beyond them. And even in cartoons, character matters. This is a disappointing offering from a brilliant team. Maybe they're just too tired to come up with new things. Expand

Made by Matt Groening (known for The Simpsons and Futurama) this show is painfully average. It's not a bad show, but it's not good either. The biggest problem is it's lack of likable characters. This show boils down to Eflo=dumb and naive, the demon's evil and a bad influence, Bean is a rebellious alcoholic, and the king is dumb and yells a lot.

That's about as developed as the characters get. As far as the plot and story telling, well, it's mediocre at best. The things that happen in the episodes have no consequence, but that's kind of how these types of cartoons are. The first two episodes had a couple witch looking mofos watching Bean in a crystal ball talking about how the demon is working and so is their plan and whatnot. I don't know what happened to that because I'm at like episode 9 and that hasn't been brought up again (I'm sure the show will revisit that eventually). Basically it's not a bad show, but there's not a single memorable thing to it. It's nice to watch an episode then leave it on to fall asleep to.

You will neither care about the story nor the characters.

Comedy was also a bit hit and miss for me, though I remember laughing more in the later half of the season than in the first half.

Where it really became interesting for me was in the last two or three episodes where more of the ongoing plot, which continues to play out in the background over the course of the season, became more apparent. And we do learn some new things about Bean and Elfo...right before it ends on a big cliffhanger!

Overall, Disenchantment is a good, but not great, show that took too long to get me hooked. It'll give you a few laughs, especially if you liked Futurama and The Simpsons, but like I said it took me a few episodes to genuinely start enjoying it and actually get interested in it. I remember that it took me some time with Futurama before I really loved it too, but generally saying "It's not great, but give it a few episodes and you might like it." isn't high praise.

Still...give it a few episodes, and you might like it. For now, I'd say Disenchantment is a solid 7 for me and I am curious about Season 2.

So I think people were hoping for something great but had the good sense not to expect it, and like I said, the reviews bear this out.

I'm here to tell you the reviews are wrong, or at least the Metacritic rating is wrong. There is no way this is a 55% show, as it is at the moment. It is much, much worse. It is fist-chewingly bad in places, and at times I just had to marvel at the fact that it got made at all.
Sometimes with a show it's a combination of factors that render it unwatchable - the actin, plot holes, rubbish soundtrack, etc., they all come together to make something rubbish on a general level. That's not the case with Disenchantment, because there is plenty about it that is very good...
    - it's lovely to look at; I still like the Groening aesthetic, it still has charm, and character designs are as likable as ever, the princess with her two buck teeth in particular.
    - the soundtrack is decent enough
    - the voice acting is pretty good, with some brilliant choices in regards to British comedians. Noel Fielding, from The Mighty Boosh and The IT Crowd pops up, as does Matt Berry from The IT Crowd again, who is as dementedly brilliant as usual, and does the best he can given the quality of writing he has to work with.

And that's what decimates the show: the writing. It is so bad, SO bad, there are moments where your mouth falls open at its awfulness. There are jokes where you spend thirty seconds trying to figure out whether it even is a joke, or just a non-sequitur that randomly found its way into the script. There are awful, obvious jokes, there are jokes that try to be smart, there are obvious jokes, there are ones that aim for subtlety but just end up unintelligible. There are all kinds of jokes, and I'd say 98% of them are either awful or depressingly obvious. The writing is staggeringly bad. Its best moments are so few and far between that you end up thinking they weren't actually intentional, and the writers just accidentally wrote something funny, much like one chimp in a thousand will accidentally manage to get onto the zookeeper's phone and start Skyping someone.

It's baffling that something with Groening's name attached to it is so profoundly unfunny. Despite the nosedive in quality over at the Simpsons, and despite the slightly up and down quality of late Futurama, both those shows started out focused and uproariously funny, with brilliant characters embedded from the very beginning. The first series of Futurama is sublime, both in its pastichey elements and in the tightness and brilliance of its writing, and although The Simpsons' peak came, imho, around season 4, its first season was still fabulously, cynically, funny. The writing in Disenchantment is so bewilderingly bad it's impossible to understand how Groening thought it was acceptable as is. I can only assume his involvement extended no further than coming up with the setting and the three main characters, because if I thought he was satisfied with things as they stand my respect for him would go through the floor. Maybe he's bored - you certainly get the feeling from this show, that no-one involved cared that much about the quality.

Either way, I promise you, you _will_ be disappointed. This is one of the worst things I've watched in a long time. Fans of Groening's work might want to watch it for the appearance of some of his staple voice actors and actresses(John DiMaggio as the king is relatively likable, perhaps a character that could be rescued from the mediocrity of the show if they fleshed him out a little), or the reassuring Groening art style, or they might just like watching a well animated, stylish cartoon that parodies the fantasy world.
But if you're a Groening fan above all because of the sheer brilliance of the writing in his shows, the scrape-yourself-up-off-the-floor hilariousness of prime Simpsons, then you may find your heart broken after watching this.

But annoyingly, John D ("Bender" before, "King Zog" here) largely channels Archie Bunker of 70s classic "All in the Family". "Luci" the flatly drawn demon "cat" is a much too obvious comedic foil, akin to JarJar Binks. And the writing is lazy throughout. The elf character is named "Elfo", great, thanks guys for spending the 2 minutes to determine that. The series plays out in sequential fashion so it's more like an extended movie/film than a tv series. This departs from Futurama and Family Guy where the episodes are more disconnected. That in itself doesn't make it better or worse but when you do the serialized plot then there better be a good payoff to justify the 10 episode commitment you've made, and it's not, it's just meh and disappointing overall. There's good potential here, and in the shows more insane scenarios you start to see the writers really take advantage of the world they've created. The pacing of the comedy also gets better after the first four or so episodes which feel pretty...disjointed. I did also enjoy that the narrative feels a lot more procedural than the past two Groening outings but we'll see how they resolve the cliffhangers to know the full effect of that quality. One thing that bothered me a bit was that all the funniest stuff in season 1 came from the non regular characters.

First off, Luci. Luci to me was the weakest part of the show. I mean I love Eric Andre but his line delivery sounded like he would pop ambien before going into the recording booth and try to say his lines while trying to stay awake. Luci is basically Bender if you took Bender's energy and brashness from a 10 to a 2. I mean the funniest Luci parts were background characters talking or interacting with him. He offered very little that hasn't been done before and better. If you're gonna do a Bender type, it has to be a bender type. Not a Bender that acts and sounds Narcoleptic.

Elfo was fine overall. His boyish obliviousness makes the moments where he acts up and says something outlandish amusing.

Bean I think was fine but not very funny. Where Fry was immediately funny because of his lack of intelligence it feels like the writers can't figure out how to make Bean funny. Others have said she's not relatable, and I can see that argument cause it's hard to relate to someone who has access to the comfort and glamor of royalty and finds such a life tedious. But I think there's something to the idea that such a life would make her feel imprisoned when she'd rather explore the world and go on adventures. It's a classic preset for the hero's journey and so in that sense I think Bean works as a protagonist but as a comedic lead? I'm not so sure.

Zog is...occasionally funny. More so towards the end. It's just kinda hard to get past hearing the fat slob Futurama character.

Oona is an utter waste of a character. Muh foreign accent and being like an alien. At least with Zoidberg it was funny given the Jewish sounding name and voice. Oona's humor is: she's got a foreign accent and is gross and annoying. I hope going forward they give her more substance.

The Little alien prince half brother (forget his name): basically Ralph Wiggums but replacing rocks for brains with hyper pampered and oblivious. He had one mildly amusing line the whole season.

The Wizard: outside of one side story in the party while Zog is away episode and one fourth wall break he really wasn't all that funny. Oh no wait, there was this gag where he was getting threatened to get beaten by a chair that was amusing. But outside that, his role is to be some Professor Farnsworth type but it is severely lacking in Farnsworth's crotchety old man unpredictability.

The court...Varys type guy with three eyes. Voiced with the same voice as the eldest of Mom's (Futurama) sons, forget the name, he's just not all that funny. Granted neither was the aforementioned Futurama character, but given the expanded role I expect more. All he is is an unfunny Varys type.

Pendergast: outside an amusing locker room moment, there just wasn't any comedy with this character. And the problem is there's potential there for so much good stuff. He has some inklings of a seeming obsession with sex and then his courting of Bean, while also being the head knight. There's so much to work with there without going full Zapp Brannigan. Make him an overconfident but unsuccessful sex addict who always has his head in his own pants and there's plenty you could jump off with. All he becomes is this loyal knight with a minor fixation on courting Bean, and even that felt underdeveloped.

Merkimer: one of the funniest "regulars." he should have gotten more screen time. His voice acting and joke delivery is the quality I expect from Groening products. I can only assume there was a scheduling conflict or something cause he was fantastic.

Bunty: with that cockney accent and dark background there's a lot more potential with Bunty that was unmet. She did have a couple amusing moments.

But with all these regulars combined, the bulk of the comedic weight comes from one or two off characters that have very limited moments to shine and do so by using the main cast as a platform or just work on their own. Chazz, a laughing horse, two maids attracted to Luci, an even smaller than usual elf, an unseen guy screaming up at Zog's balcony, an unnamed assassin. All combined for great fleeting moments.

I give it a 7 cause there's a great framework to work with and the last half did show a lot of growth and showed some sign of heart. Hopefully season 2 builds on all that.
