Everybody was waiting this show to be The Simpsons. This isn't the Simpsons. The characters are interesting and not plain once they are fully presented. The medieval world portrayed is amazing and the animation is beautifully performed.

Jokes don't stem from crazy antics or one liners but instead from characterization that develops over the season.
Take Elfo for example. He is basically a badass of an Elf. Yet when he gets to the human world he goes on to gradually realize just how innocent and gullible he really is. And he changes. He becomes increasingly manipulative of others and temperamental (In the entertaining way). That's the key to this. The characters are multidimensional and change.

The season does get of to a slow start. While I was amused, I didn't binge this until around the 5th or 6th episode. But that's not to say the episodes were bad. Rather, they have satisfying conclusions that don't make me feel a need to find out what happens next. A show like this would be better suited for a weekly release schedule.

This show is entertaining. But if you constantly try to compare it to the Simpsons or Futurama, you will be disappointed. Because this show, at it's core, is not like Futurama or The simpsons. It is far bloodier and dare-I-say sexier than those. It's not a pure comedy. It's an adventure show.

If you're looking for the same kind of 2-jokes-a-minute comedy as Futurama or Simpsons, you will be disappointed. If you're looking for something to just kick back and enjoy while eating a pizza, this is the show for you.

I'm looking forward to the future of this series. The world evidently has a ton of thought and lore put into it and I can't wait to find out more about the Demons.

I bet that by the time of it's third season, Disenchantment will have a rabid fanbase of conspiracy theorists. Might as well get on the bandwagon now.

All in all, a decent show with great world building and fleshed out characters. Not binge-worthy.

I must admit, the first few episodes didn't really grab me. It all felt...rushed, even though the first episode was nearly 40 minutes long.

Comedy was also a bit hit and miss for me, though I remember laughing more in the later half of the season than in the first half.

Where it really became interesting for me was in the last two or three episodes where more of the ongoing plot, which continues to play out in the background over the course of the season, became more apparent. And we do learn some new things about Bean and Elfo...right before it ends on a big cliffhanger!

Overall, Disenchantment is a good, but not great, show that took too long to get me hooked. It'll give you a few laughs, especially if you liked Futurama and The Simpsons, but like I said it took me a few episodes to genuinely start enjoying it and actually get interested in it. I remember that it took me some time with Futurama before I really loved it too, but generally saying "It's not great, but give it a few episodes and you might like it." isn't high praise.

Still...give it a few episodes, and you might like it. For now, I'd say Disenchantment is a solid 7 for me and I am curious about Season 2.

My favourite qualities of the show are found in the attention to detail that the animators put into the signs and background writing of every episode. At first glance, it seems like the show has a general cyclical structure, but this structure is undermined in later episodes in which the plot becomes more important and slightly darker. Many of the reviews below seem overly harsh and have failed to give the show a chance, as I genuinely cannot see how someone could rate this lower than a 6. Expand

There's good potential here, and in the shows more insane scenarios you start to see the writers really take advantage of the world they've created. The pacing of the comedy also gets better after the first four or so episodes which feel pretty...disjointed. I did also enjoy that the narrative feels a lot more procedural than the past two Groening outings but we'll see how they resolve the cliffhangers to know the full effect of that quality. One thing that bothered me a bit was that all the funniest stuff in season 1 came from the non regular characters.

First off, Luci. Luci to me was the weakest part of the show. I mean I love Eric Andre but his line delivery sounded like he would pop ambien before going into the recording booth and try to say his lines while trying to stay awake. Luci is basically Bender if you took Bender's energy and brashness from a 10 to a 2. I mean the funniest Luci parts were background characters talking or interacting with him. He offered very little that hasn't been done before and better. If you're gonna do a Bender type, it has to be a bender type. Not a Bender that acts and sounds Narcoleptic.

Elfo was fine overall. His boyish obliviousness makes the moments where he acts up and says something outlandish amusing.

Bean I think was fine but not very funny. Where Fry was immediately funny because of his lack of intelligence it feels like the writers can't figure out how to make Bean funny. Others have said she's not relatable, and I can see that argument cause it's hard to relate to someone who has access to the comfort and glamor of royalty and finds such a life tedious. But I think there's something to the idea that such a life would make her feel imprisoned when she'd rather explore the world and go on adventures. It's a classic preset for the hero's journey and so in that sense I think Bean works as a protagonist but as a comedic lead? I'm not so sure.

Zog is...occasionally funny. More so towards the end. It's just kinda hard to get past hearing the fat slob Futurama character.

Oona is an utter waste of a character. Muh foreign accent and being like an alien. At least with Zoidberg it was funny given the Jewish sounding name and voice. Oona's humor is: she's got a foreign accent and is gross and annoying. I hope going forward they give her more substance.

The Little alien prince half brother (forget his name): basically Ralph Wiggums but replacing rocks for brains with hyper pampered and oblivious. He had one mildly amusing line the whole season.

The Wizard: outside of one side story in the party while Zog is away episode and one fourth wall break he really wasn't all that funny. Oh no wait, there was this gag where he was getting threatened to get beaten by a chair that was amusing. But outside that, his role is to be some Professor Farnsworth type but it is severely lacking in Farnsworth's crotchety old man unpredictability.

The court...Varys type guy with three eyes. Voiced with the same voice as the eldest of Mom's (Futurama) sons, forget the name, he's just not all that funny. Granted neither was the aforementioned Futurama character, but given the expanded role I expect more. All he is is an unfunny Varys type.

Pendergast: outside an amusing locker room moment, there just wasn't any comedy with this character. And the problem is there's potential there for so much good stuff. He has some inklings of a seeming obsession with sex and then his courting of Bean, while also being the head knight. There's so much to work with there without going full Zapp Brannigan. Make him an overconfident but unsuccessful sex addict who always has his head in his own pants and there's plenty you could jump off with. All he becomes is this loyal knight with a minor fixation on courting Bean, and even that felt underdeveloped.

Merkimer: one of the funniest "regulars." he should have gotten more screen time. His voice acting and joke delivery is the quality I expect from Groening products. I can only assume there was a scheduling conflict or something cause he was fantastic.

Bunty: with that cockney accent and dark background there's a lot more potential with Bunty that was unmet. She did have a couple amusing moments.

But with all these regulars combined, the bulk of the comedic weight comes from one or two off characters that have very limited moments to shine and do so by using the main cast as a platform or just work on their own. Chazz, a laughing horse, two maids attracted to Luci, an even smaller than usual elf, an unseen guy screaming up at Zog's balcony, an unnamed assassin. All combined for great fleeting moments.

I give it a 7 cause there's a great framework to work with and the last half did show a lot of growth and showed some sign of heart. Hopefully season 2 builds on all that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is very entertaining to me as a fan of dark fantasy and rick and Morty. This show cheerfully takes fantasy tropes and corrupts them. For example the elves are happy and singy . And they stay happy and singy as they are lynching and stabbing people, which got really disturbing fast. The giant in the show (middle of the run) is not a stomping evil monster it’s a really annoyed person who’s being used for a lie. The princess is not a generic princess she’s a violent murderous alcoholic. It’s wonderful. Expand

It is certainly a shame that some of the wit and charm from the main characters is lost when compared to Groening's other works, however the amount of genuinely funny gags within the world such as the constant sign quips and repeating appearances of unique character gags show that the comedy is not completely lost. Now that the world-building is over and the writers have gained experience with these new characters, the stage is set for a new, wonderfully comedic group dynamic for the next season.

I commend this show for trying a few new things compared to The Simpsons and Futurama. The story is serialized and does a good job of world building. There are also a few truly emotional moments for the characters and a couple philosophical ponderings. Being on Netflix also allows the show more leeway when it comes to content and darker humor.

Overall, the show is more interesting than outright funny. I mean it is funny; it's just that the laugh-out-loud moments are few and far between. Plus, several of the jokes rely on tired medieval times cliches.

The episodes are a bit repetitive as most of them revolve around Princess Bea trying to be independent while arguing with her father. The main trio are good, but the supporting cast is lacking. I mean they have their moments, but they're mostly based on tropes like the weird/cranky advisor or the arrogant captain-of-the guard. They have their moments but not a lot of strong personalities. You'll find no Moes or Zoidbergs here.

The animation is really good. The background coloring and lines truly have a fairy tale quality to them. The show utilizes 2 1/2 half computer graphics to give buildings and such dimension and it's very impressive. The music is rather unique.

I am looking forward to the next season. I'm invested in what's happening, I just hope next season will be a little funnier.
