Season 3 is where things get ugly.
To provide a basis for my statement, Season 3 felt like they were trying to cram two seasons worth of materiel into one. The story for Season 3 should have focused exclusively on General Rahm Tak's attempt to invade Defiance. By bringing in both the Votanis Collective, and a completely new race called the Omec, into a single season's worth of episodes leaves little time to truly explore either storyline.
The show takes very little time even talking about the VC in earlier seasons, and this was a good opportunity to explore their culture and motivations much the way the show focused on the Earth Republic in Season 2.
Instead, Rahm Tak is defeated rather quickly, the VC representative offers a trumped-up apology, then the whole thing is swept under the rug by new story developments.
The second half of Season 3 focuses on the Omec. Once again, spending only half a season on their storyline doesn't give enough time to examine the character of the Omec, or learn about their culture and motivations. In fact, the first half of the season had a sub-plot involving the potential dangers of this new species, but when the season is resolved, so too are the Omec. The threat they pose never actually materializes, and they are disposed of in a plot twist that I can only call "confusing".
Given the fact the entire season feels like it is being played in fast forward, there are many instances where logic and reason are thrown out the airlock in order to move the story forward at as fast a pace as possible. I have to admit several times where I pointed at the screen and called **** when a character does something dumb, or completely against the grain.
This all came to a head when Amanda Rosewater, upon hearing about the Omec "invasion", collapses into a sobbing heap in the doctor's office. There are several times where she had stared into the face of total catastrophe without blinking, that to have her break down and sob "We're all gonna die!" seemed so inconsistent with her character it actually made me angry at the script writers.
That basically set up the rest of Season 3 for me, every episode after that one had at least one "****" moment. It honestly feels like the show creators were planning and writing two more seasons, then were informed there would only be one. Instead of doing the sensible thing, and picking one story to run with, they tried to do everything at once, and made a mess of it.
I don't even know if Defiance will be picked up for another season, but given the way this one ended, it doesn't seem possible.
If you are a die-hard fan of Defiance then watch Season 3, but if you're expecting it to top how great the show was in Season 2, you will be very disappointed.
General Rahm Tak as a character is absolutely great, and it's worth watching the first half of Season 3 just to watch him do his thing. He's evil, and he loves it, and that's my favorite type of villain ;)
In fact, I gave one whole extra point in my score just for him.… Expand
