It's hard to conceive of anything ever matching or surpassing this, i'm not sure it's even possible, life is better and the world is a better place with this in it, if this isn't the most glowing, positive review you have ever read then #1 I want to watch what the other guy was reviewing and #2 I have not give this show what it deserves. It's actually crazy this can even exist, I have seen masterpieces that look really weak by comparison, mind-boggling. If I was only going by the quality and didn't know any better, i'd think god himself must have made it.

I wanted to watch Death Note for a long time now but I never managed to get into the series until recently.
After hearing how Death Note doesn't necessarily excel in action, I expected it will emphasize on delivering a compelling story, and it does; the story is very intriguing, focused and amusing... for the most part.
Same goes for everything else, like the concept, the main characters and even the music.
Honestly, I haven't seen something like it before... however, unfortunately for the series, the second part (the last 12 episodes) is disappointing; it feels rushed, it introduces some uninteresting characters and most importantly, it lacks focus, unlike the first part. On the bright side though, the second part is significantly shorter than the first part, it keeps some good elements from the first part and the ending is so good, it saves the series from going downhill.
Lastly, I don't consider it a flaw but I want to get this off my chest. Misa Amane - a major character - has to be the most stubborn and annoying character I've seen in a while; I'm genuinely impressed by how much she was able to make me despise her character, like... she's absolutely insufferable at times.

Pros:
+ Engaging story
+ Interesting concept
+ Good characters
+ Great music

Cons:
- Underwhelming second part

Narrative: 8/10
Characters: 7/10
Music: 8/10

Final Rating: 8.5/10
- Really Great -
In the end, Death Note is extremely entertaining and unique despite the noticeable weaker second part.

Do I recommend it?:
Yes because it's surprisingly enjoyable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just Great, In the dark, desolate world of shinigamis (death gods), a bored shinigami named Ryuk decides to come to the human world. There, he drops his Death Note, a book that shinigamis use to kill people. Anyone who's name is written in the Death Note will die within 40 seconds, and the time, place, and method of death can also be controlled. Ryuk's Death Note is soon found by Light Yagami, an intelligent but insensitive high school student. Since Light touched the Death Note, Ryuk becomes visible to him. Ryuk explains to Light how to use the Death Note (all the instructions are also written in the book itself), and Light decides to use the Death Note's power to cleanse the world of all criminals and create a new, "perfect" world.

Secretly, and unbeknown to anyone, even his father who's a police officer, Light looks up every criminal he can find and uses the Death Note to kill them. After a while, authorities from around the world take notice of the mysterious mass deaths of their criminals and decide that someone must be behind it all. The unknown murderer, nicknamed "Kira," becomes a major news item, heralding both people who support and are against his "divine punishment" of criminals. The police force finally decides to hire the legendary detective L to figure out exactly who Kira is. Kira's whereabouts are traced back to Japan and Light's father becomes chief of the police force that is investigating Kira, totally unaware that his own son is the very person he's seeking. A battle of wits ensues between Light and L, as Light becomes more obsessed with the Death Note's power and continues to baffle the world with his mysterious, discreet murders, and L keeps getting closer and closer to discovering Kira's true identity. But in spite of L's wits being a good match for his own, Light remains confident in his task of using the Death Note to abolish evil in the world and create a new world with him as the "god." Even when new obstacles arise, such as Misa, a hyperactive supermodel who also has a Death Note and a huge crush on Light, the Yotsuba company who are after Kira too, Mikami Teru, a man who believes Kira is "god" and he is meant to serve Kira's wishes, and the SPK, another detective agency lead by Near who is meant to follow in L's footsteps. But even with all these complications that arise, Light's amazing intelligence continues to keep him one step ahead of his pursers. However, as he becomes more obsessed with the power of the Death Note, he seems to lose his own humanity. When he's able to unfaltering kill anyone who may be a threat to his plans, even if they haven't done anything wrong, it becomes obvious that the Death Note is the one controlling Light instead of vice versa. Light's original intention of creating a pure world turns into an ego trip for him with the people around him as pawns. Light's actions and further descent into obsession with the Death Note brings up the question of whether a single human being should ever be in possession of such non-human power, great story

I might just say that it's a shame that the 2nd half of the series isn't as good and that's because of the fans, so that the series doesn't end up being drawn out and it shows. However, it is still my favourite anime and that's mainly because of its idea. Expand

I'm disappointed. Death Note is one of the most famous Anime and I was expecting quality similar to Ghost in the Shell, Hunter X Hunter and other greats. But this isn't even close.

The concept is interesting and grasped my imagination. What would I have done?

Well the characters in the show definitely acted different to what I would have done. It's basically a bunch of high school kids playing god. Easily offended and full of revenge. The goal seems to be winning, instead of being a true godlike character that doesn't care about small things. Just like what you have to expect from young adults.

The original L is the only redeeming character and what kept me watching. I just like quirky but highly intellectual characters like Sherlock Holmes.

Almost all female characters are horribly submissive, while portrait to be smart. That leads into a couple of sexists if not misogynistic jokes, this anime is definitely not from 2020.

Visually and acoustically it's great.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Death Note is one of the best animes I've had the opportunity to get my hands on, I dare say it's the best to represent investigation and suspense in the world of anime.

The story is presented to us through a different perspective, we follow Light Yagami, the genius student of primitive sense of justice, but of profoundly advanced intellect, a chemical combination ready to explode when he puts his hands on the Death Note, thus bringing his vile ideas on the fate of criminals. But suddenly we are surprised by the triumphant appearance of the greatest detective in the world using the nickname of L, it is at this moment that the spectators start to change chairs, thinking again about which of them is right, who is the true justice.

Now, as no work is free from criticism, I need to point out the biggest sin, in my opinion, in this anime. Close to the final stretch, we have L's death, to everyone's surprise, which in my opinion was a good decision, to the surprise of everyone reading here, I really felt his death, he fulfilled his role, moving with viewers' emotions, but this is where we go from positive to negative, the future consequences of L's death were bad for the work. We are introduced to the home where L grew up, there we meet Mihael Keehl (Mello) and Nate River (Near), who are about to continue the hunt for Kira, disputing over who will be L's successor, but unfortunately the work gives little development to both, especially for Mello, since their presentation was late, it was difficult to sympathize with them, I confess that I liked Mello more, since he follows a completely original ideology, different from Near, who is, practically, a clone from L, the difference is just the change in hair color (Sorry for the joke).

Concluding my analysis, I comment on the end of the story, where Ryuk, Light's shinigami, takes his Death Note, as he had promised at the beginning of the story, ending the life of the false god Kira in a poetic way, just like the first name written in the Death Note was authored by Light, the last name closes the list with a golden key being his own name.

We learned that alone we cannot change the world, that actions have consequences and that depending on the path we choose, we can have our stories ended prematurely, as wisely shown in the scene where Light is running, after Touta Matsuda shoots him, and can glimpse with his eyes how his life could have been different if he didn't have the Death Note.

(Bonus comment) I want to declare that Touta Matsuda is one of the characters I had the most affection for in the work, he is extremely funny, serious when necessary and proved that he is indeed useful filling Kira with accurate shots, a true gunslinger!
