This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. Let me start off by saying that the first 2/3 of Death Note were fantastic. Great characters (save for Misa), brilliant writing, and a good concept. Then, L was killed off. I didn't have a problem with this. In fact, I thought it was the right thing to do. If Light and L kept up the whole cat-and-mouse thing, it would've gotten stale. But then they introduced Mello and Near, the latter of which is one of my least favorite characters in all of anime. I liked Mello because he was different from Ryuzaki, which was a change of pace I liked. But Near is just a mere imitation of L, a cardboard cutout, almost. Except Near is less, funny, likable, well-developed, and intelligent. The plot then becomes nonsensical. Near never does anything, all he does is guess and rip off other people's work. Even the ending is very disappointing. Death Note could've been one of my favorite animus, but unfortunately, it went into a downward spiral after L's death. Too many characters were introduced and the pacing was all over the place and inconsistent. Oh, Death Note, how you've fallen from grace. Full Review »
