He definitely did that for a reason but it just wasn't entertaining. Though I don't think he did this special to be entertaining, as he makes some very serious points toward the end as he builds up the central theme of this hour. It was his last standup special as part of a Netflix multi-film deal. I encourage you to watch and determine for yourself. Expand

I've been a fan of every Chappelle special except for this one. The highlight of course being STICKS AND STONES, but here it seems like he is too focussed on rehashing his past specials and responding to criticism.

If you are new to the party, there's not much to enjoy here - try Age of Spin instead. As with this all Chappelle stand ups, there is a lot of what Chappelle calls "victim-blaming" - if you don't find sexual harassment or gay-bashing jokes funny you might take offence. Expand

This was oneAfter finally watching the new Dave Chappelle special, “The Closer,” there were two claims right off the bat that I found egregious. The first of which was that the gays of the stonewall riot aren’t the gays in the streets today. This was one of the most bizarre statements made in the whole special. He claims to support the brick throwing, fire starting, cop punching queers of the stonewall riots, so then what of the ones doing that exact thing in the streets right now? We clearly have modern examples of this, but those movements have received mostly backlash and criticism from across the country. His audience cheers when he brings up the Stonewall queers. He says “those were some badass gays.” But we have no reason to believe they wouldn’t all call the police on those rioters today. The other claim is that gay people have made more progress than black people. This is simply artificial conflict. The struggles between queer and black people have to be neither mutually exclusive or the same. They are just different. “Gays” just recently within the last couple decades received the right to marry, which is a right currently under threat today. I also think that it’s important to recognize that queer people have indeed existed for as long as black people have existed, and I would venture to say there are probably a lot of queer black people who are especially oppressed. It seems to me like Dave’s issue is with the white liberal feminist movement, while completely disregarding the struggles of grass roots transfeminist movements led by queer black people happening right now. The initial abolition movement in Portland during the summer of 2020 was itself started by black, indigenous, and queer femmes. I don’t think intersectionalism is something that has ever crossed Dave’s mind in his entire life. The transphobia all throughout the special is just horrid, and could only possibly be digested by someone who thinks it’s okay to say whatever you want about trans people- so long as you “have a trans friend.” This hasn’t been a publicly acceptable argument to make fun of any persecuted group since at least the 60’s. These statements simply aren’t compatible with anyone who calls themself a feminist. Dave is taking advantage of the fact that although it has been considered widely unacceptable to be homophobic in more recent times, (something Dave clearly still has a problem with) the modern day **** bashers can still get away with setting their sights on the trans community. This special is a death throw for Chappelle. The last thing anyone needed was another millionaire who had his own show and currently has over half a dozen Netflix specials crying about “cancel culture” or “punching down” from a literal stage, with a microphone, in front of hundreds of people. The irony is obviously completely lost in him. Although it is sometimes hard to tell when he does this intentionally, for example using the words “frumpy dyke” a mere 5 seconds after describing himself as a “feminist” following a very heartwarming story about him searching what that word meant on Google. Heavy sarcasm implied there. People are too aware for comedy like this anymore, but Dave just doesn’t want to change. He very clearly wants to have his cake and eat it too. He can’t possibly understand why anyone would be hurt by the words he says and then seemingly with intention, he says the most offensive things he thinks he can get away with. He’s an aging, geriatric relic of a bygone era desperately grasping for attention as he fades into obscurity. He cries common media tropes and queerphobic dogwhistles consistent with a person who has the ability to decide when he wants to leave america or come back to make comedy specials based on Facebook boomer memes. Give it another few years and he’ll be about as relevant as Dane Cook. (Hopefully) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a weird one, man. Dave obviously still knows how to get a laugh, but almost all of the special is consumed by his relationship with the transgender community, the jokes he made about them in the past, and the public reaction to these jokes. His stance, as far as I can tell, seems to be that he just wants to treat transgender people as human beings, which entails being able to make fun of them just like he does about everybody else. That sounds good, but he seems completely unable to understand where the trans community is coming from when criticising him; very uneducated about trans issues, as evidenced by his endorsement of JK Rowling (I highly recommend watching ContraPoints' video on Youtube to understand why Rowling's stance is so problematic); and generally unwilling to re-examine his own position. Basically, he comes across as kind of unsympathetic to any other group aside from African-Americans (whose issues he frequently refers back to as whataboutisms to deflect criticism) and cannot grasp that anybody who is white could possibly have real problems and feel marginalized. In the end, he tugs on the crowd's heart-strings by telling the tale of a trans friend of his who publicly supported him and comitted suicide, but in this special it only seems to serve the purpose of being the trans-equivalent of the old "I can't be racist, one of my best friends is black!" defense. I presume that this special, for all these reasons, is going to find a lot of fans in a certain demographic that tends to talk and think a lot about "SJWs", "cancel culture" and how "free speech is under attack" and listens to the JRE religiously.

Aside from all that, I also found this to probably be Dave's least funny special as measured by the number of really good laughs I had. All in all, a very weird and weak one to go out on (maybe calling yourself the GOAT here was a little premature Dave).

Dave Chappelle is a rare gem! You can split his demographic into two representative portions. On the one side, comedy fans from all religions, races, genders. On the other side, the alphabet mafia.

Ru Paul isn’t that funny anymore. These specials have been pretty overrated. Lot of faux enlightenment. Laughs per minute would make you think it’s a Ted talk. Vibes of a baby boomer who’s lost his self awareness.

Because the radical leftists have gained too much social power now. They have the power to literally cancel you for going against their beliefs. Regardless, the comedy king, Dave Chappelle, is standing up against this tyrannous system, and I believe that he should be held in high regard for that. In a time where standing up and speaking against the system can get you chastised, we regular folk ought to support those who are actually brave and daring enough to do that, like Dave is doing in this special. It's the least we can do. Expand

Just like with Sticks & Stones, he doesn't hold back and speaks the truth in the only way he knows how... Comedy. This is what comedy is! No holding back, taking on everyone equally. With Sticks & Stones, I watched it twice. The first time to laugh at the jokes, the second time to listen to the message. I recommend doing that with The closer as well. Dave's heartfelt and emotional speech about his trans friend who was tragically bullied to death by those that call themselves "trans allies" and "woke" shows how much Dave cared for her. Dave loves everyone, no matter their sexuality, race, or gender identity. But he is against the lobby that forces things down people's throats. How comedians in the '80s and '90s targeted organized religion, Chappelle is on the forefront, targeting the woke community that has become the modern-day equivalent of the 80's religious puritan America. I got to hangout with him in San Francisco a few years ago and he definitely has his head on his shoulders, something that the racist-leftists hate for a black man in the west to have. The Closer was a perfect conclusion and it was enjoyable. The whole "transgender" subject and community needs to be called out. The community is being propped up by extremely dangerous Marxists how do not truly represent or care about the community itself, and in fact they are hurting trans individuals! I have two trans friends here in SF and they questions the movement, especially since they are so few as % of the population. For example, everyone wonders why "they" are pushing it on kids through their school system. How is this helping the trans community with a 40%+ suicide rate? This sh*t needs to stop. Expand

He touches every nerve and the funny bone, over and over again. Critics are playing the woke part, as usual, making sure we know that they're outraged and offended on behalf of everyone else. Most of them likely laughed their asses off, watching alone in their sad apartments, and then got on their laptops to express the pain they suffered by jokes that have gone "too far" and "hurt" too many. Sticks and stones...

This inability to laugh at ourselves, each other, and the most sensitive topics in our culture is the saddest disability one can have in life. But humorless **** make for great targets in comedy. And the last thing you want is the master Dave Chappelle placing a bulls-eye on your face!
