Having not read the book, I can't evaluate the series' fidelity to it. On its own, however, "Dare Me" is definitely not for people who like a little naturalism with their melodrama. On its own, however, "Dare Me" is definitely not for people who like a little naturalism with their melodrama. The series take place in a parallel universe where no adult notices when a new cheerleading coach smokes in her office or throws daily alcohol-soaked house parties for her squad. This adult oblivion allows the coach to openly enjoy the high-school humpery she missed as a teenager and allows the teenagers to run similarly wild, which makes the coach and the cheerleaders peers in one sense, even though the squad remains an absolute monarchy with coach as queen. This tension between the coach's age-inappropriate behavior and her absolute rule sets up disaster, as does the seething resentment of the queen she deposed, squad captain and top girl Beth.

I have to pause and say I quite like Marlo Kelly as Beth, a more subtle sociopath than most TV mean girls.

Anyway, having seen 4 episodes, I'm still watching but just barely. I'm curious to see how much of this weird parallel universe turns out to be imaginary, and I'm also enjoying Beth's deviousness, though it's a guilty pleasure because she's a bully, and we're not supposed to side with bullies any more, even when they're the most interesting people onscreen. Are mild curiosity and Beth enough to get me through the series? Depends what else clamors for my attention over the next month or so.… Expand
