Season 16 Review:
I would not go so far as to say that Criminal Minds: Evolution is the product of “What if Criminal Minds and a prestige cable drama had a baby?” But that wouldn’t be too far off. It’s just wonderfully different, in assorted ways that longtime viewers may not have realized they wanted.

Season 17 Review:
While there’s potential for the Gold Star story—which is already much more interesting than Voit’s—it remains to be seen if that is enough to cover up the outstanding issues. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still enjoying this season for what it is, but the first two episodes definitely tempered my expectations about what it might achieve.

Season 16 Review:
Has Criminal Minds: Evolution changed the tried and true formula that carried its original show to over 320 episodes? Not really. But with an extended storyline and most of the cast back, it’ll feel like a refresh to the show’s longtime fans, while feeling familiar enough to keep them very happy.

Season 1 Review:
It has a few points going for it: Mandy Patinkin's onscreen magnetism; some truly eerie episodes; and a smartness that it wears on its sleeve. On the downside, it draws on too many other recent hits -- "CSI," "Crossing Jordan," "Medium," "House," "Law & Order: SVU""Law & Order: SVU" -- for visual style, character tics, mind games and an ability to find the truth in confounding evidence.

Season 16 Review:
At times the plotting is facile, and the scripts have their share of groaners ("Agent Rossi has forgotten more about serial offenders than we will ever know!"), but nobody comes to Criminal Minds for complexity and nuance. Showrunner Erica Messer knows that her viewers want something very simple and satisfying.

Season 1 Review:
Now and then, there are instances in which the profilers, and Gideon in particular, literally walk out of one scene and into another. It's a nice touch and a visually creative change of pace, but it's not enough -- not even with frequent shots of Patinkin's expressive face -- to distinguish this series in a particularly crowded genre.

Season 1 Review:
The problem with "Criminal Minds" -- other than there are 48 series in a similar vein, 39 of them on CBS -- is that every person in this cast has an area of expertise, and they spend the hour telling you about it in the most unrealistic workplace conversations you'll ever hear.
