A solid 40-50% of it is a teen drama full of tropes about being a gay kid in America. That hasn’t been a hundred times in the last decade… Know how you normalize gay people in society? By not making their sexuality the crux of your characters personalities or as a way to drive the plot. The fact the original creator was gay could have influence upon this decision, but it really does feel forced and inauthentic.

The dialogue is questionable (it’s a slasher in theory so can’t expect much), but the acting is actually decent with few exceptions. Plenty of gore, lore, funny kills, and and black comedy. Irreverent, but still colors within PC lines. Worth a single binge, but like “Seed of Chucky” probably not worth revisiting.

The violence is classic chucky. Creative and dumb (but in a good way). The elephant in the room is obviously all the pandering. In a 45 minute episode at least 30 minutes were spent just pandering to lgbtq people. They aren't even the core demographic so why bend the script in that direction? It felt so forced and off putting. Can we just have ONE show that isn't all about virtue signalling? Expand

I’m not lieing when I say most of the episode focused solely on overboard bullying and this kids sexual orientation. Please don’t waste your time. This show is terrible. The only good thing from it was the 3 or so minutes of time dedicated to chucky being evil. Chucky was very creepy and voiced well but the terrible camera work and pandering made this unwatchable. You would think but the way the film was shot you were watching a 90s movie. Don’t waste your time, you’ll thank me later. Expand

Right away, I will tell you, the pilot did not impress me, in fact, it actually felt like I am watching a cheesy fan film with horrible acting and poor dialogue. What happened to the cult classic Chucky? A doll that gave you nightmares, a doll that slowly messed with your head, making you think that the main hero was actually the killer all along, but instead, now we have a cheesy series about a boy who is struggling with himself because he is gay (the "bullies" don't sound anything like people do in the real world, in here, it feels like a PSA for anti-bullying, so whenever someone would make fun of him, I would either cringe or laugh my ass off because of how poor the writing was) and doesn't focus on Chucky himself. It's as if he was kicked out of his own show and replaced with a PC cast. The lighting is decent and the photography is ok I guess, but I can't watch a movie with horrible writing, I just can't! When seeing the trailers, I didn't expect much from it, and after seeing the episode... I can't say I am surprised. Normally, TV shows always make their pilots the most interesting episode out of all to attract the most viewers, and safe to say, I now expect the rest of the show to be even more horrible! At the end, I can't tell if it was mostly the writers and directors fault, or the casts horrible acting, but I do know the people who filmed this did the best they could. So I won't leave on an extremely low note, and instead just leave it at a 2. Expand

I heard a rumor that they were going to focus on the protagonist being gay. Unfortunately, that was a true statement, instead of being about a killer doll, it was about a gay kid being bullied with a crazy doll in the background. Bad first episode.

I don't get why people are calling this show "woke" or "virtue signaling". The creator of Chucky is gay and probably wanted to write something from the perspective of his younger self. A lot of LGBTQ+ people watch and enjoy this franchise for the reason that Mancini was never afraid to express ideas from (t)his community through the Child's Play movies (Chucky has a transgender child for God's sake). If having a gay main character makes this show "woke" or "virtue signaling" I would do some research regarding this franchise and its creator. And after that, I would f*** right off. Expand

It's even in the music in episode 1. 15 minutes in and I'm already wanting to vomit from all the woke homosexual talk. And the kid is hispanic to boot and he is fantasizing about the black kid on the bus. What kind of liberal agenda is this garbage? This isn't Chucky. This is woke america crap that will make you want to puke. Do yourselves a favor and watch the original movies, at least the first two. This is garbage. I'll give it 1 out of 10 just for the fact it has the legendary voice actor for Chucky from the originals. If the homosexual, bullied high school boy, doll playing woke crap keeps being the main focus then I won't even bother continuing to watch. This pilot episode is 95% about lgbtqapwefoiajflk crap and the acting is HORRIBLE. Writing is HORRIBLE. Seems completely fake and more like an ad for bullied kids, which would make sense if it it wasn't called Chucky. Sigh, stay away from this garbage pilot at least. If you can't see how liberal this trash is then you need to wake up and stop being blinded by media and politics. Expand

I was here to experience the fun and interesting first 2 Child's Play films, and the weird yet fun Bride and Seed, To enjoy the rebooted Curse and Cult films. To say my excitement for the Chucky TV Series was beyond high would've been an understatement, I was anticipating this show for years after Cult of Chucky, and this show utterly disappointed me. Don Mancini, left us with a lot of promise, he said this show was going to really explore Charles Lee Ray's origins, have a good mixture of things for old and new fans, and pure Chucky camp. The show didn't deliver on a lot of that. The new cast of characters like Jake, Devon, Junior, Lexy, are all FINE, painfully fine in fact. The problem I take with a lot of it is for some reason in the current year of 2021 people bully Jake to death, as if kids these days even care about someone's sexual orientation, it doesn't ever feel realistic at all with how much Jake is attacked. Lexy for some reason hates Jake? Why? It's never explained it's because he's gay or that she and he have a bad past with one another. She just does it because it's funny? Okay?...

Devon and Jakes's relationship: wasn't as deep or connected as Mancini made it out to be. They just kinda like each other and wound up with one another. It isn't really well written or told. It just happens. Junior is just spiteful and I mean that just how Lexy is, it is never explained past "I hate my cousin just because I feel inconvenienced" So the new characters aren't all that great or fun to watch, and half the time I can't get behind EVERYONE hating on Jake for just how unrealistic it all feels to me. So, how about those old characters? Did Mancini deliver on giving old fans stuff to work with as well? Eh, yes and no? Andy, Kyle, Nica, and Tiffany are barely in the show, and when they are it's honestly the strongest parts. I loved Andy and Kyles's brother-sister relationship, to see that again after all these years was truly special to me. I love how badass the two felt to each other, its just insane to me it took until episode 6 to actually see them again and it wasn't even for more than 10 minutes of the episode. At the end of the day seeing them was heartwarming and nice.

Nica on the other hand...has NOTHING to do the entire show and I mean NOTHING. She was introduced and was used to spout exposition dialogue to the audience of people who never saw Curse or Cult. Other than that, all she does is scream and beg the entire show's run. Tiffany was really fun to see again, but her character was confusing and just downright aggravating at times. One moment she's over Chucky the next she's hitting on the guy again. She's incredibly inconsistent and for some reason forms some sort of connection or bond for Nica? Why? From what it looks like they've never actually gotten the chance to speak to each other like humans and like people. Why does she even have any sort of feelings towards Nica? It's once again POORLY explained, just like a lot of characters. The origin: It's so terrible. This was the most disappointing part to me, actually getting to explore Chucky's origin. They biffed it, ruined it, explained almost nothing of value from when he was a kid growing up in the '60s to a young adult in the '70s or a middle-aged man in the 80's. Why does Chucky love killing? What was his downfall to becoming a murderer? Why did he murder his mom? DON'T KNOW because the show never spent a minute explaining any of that to the audience! What a waste of time. I learned next to nothing about the character, got a couple of nice hints to older characters like Eddie Caputo and Tiffany, but they never meant anything. While we're on the topic of the origin they decided to retcon the reason Chucky got caught by the police again! This time it was Tiffany being angry because Chucky isn't spending time with her?...so let me get this straight, Tiffany, the woman who is shown in Bride to be nothing, but loyal to Chucky and thought that Chucky was going to purpose to her and waited for him to return is the one who called the cops now and got him killed? Yeah...sure..ok. Chucky himself is the highlight, every damn word that the doll says in this show is just as iconic and fun in the previous films. It's honestly what kept me watching other than Andy and Kyle. His quips are just as good as ever, with very few not landing.

In conclusion, this has been a very unfun ride as a fan. Mancini promised a lot, and at the end of the day the show has some good points and decent whatever characters, but truly this is a step down from the rebooted Curse and Cult. It makes me sad too because I can't judge this show how I would judge Bride or Seed, as stupid films that I know are bad, but I have fun with them because this show wants me to take it seriously, it wants me to think it's deep and it's simply not.

Surprisingly this show is great. It introduces a lot of new characters who are all very likable. That really kept me interested but on top of that Chucky is amazing. There are so many great scenes which range from hilarious to mildly horrifying and tons of great callbacks which fans will appreciate but which aren't going to leave newcomers confused. I can't recommend it enough.

The show itself is somewhat enjoyable, though there is a little bit too much over acting in the lead characters facial expressions, and let's see is a bit over the top with her mean girls impression. But ultimately it is entertaining. But disliking the let's find gay love perspective the way it's pushed so much in this series does tend to wear thin after a while, and if that makes me not work enough, or something stupid like that, it is what it is. People don't need this in their entertainment. Mancini can go do a book or a documentary if he truly wants to talk about her childhood, and honestly no one would really care. Hence the reason he does it in his Chucky series Expand
