This show was a huge blow that came out of nowhere.
At first I definitely thought it would be a good show. The subject was too interesting and above all it was an HBO production but once I started watching it, the excellent quality of all the production, in all its levels left me quite impressed.

The first episode catches you in seconds and from that moment you are already inside and the story never lets you go.

The story is heartbreaking and allows you understand a little more the extent of the disaster and how close Europe was to become a wasteland.

Chernobyl is a small miniseries of only five episodes but they are all excellent. Sometimes it's good to be short and concise and this series understands it perfectly.
Undoubtedly one of the best productions of HBO in years.
Don't try to compare it with Game of Thrones, that's a mistake and offense for the work of both productions.

If you haven't seen it, I will not tell you should give it a chance, what I'll say is watch it immediately.

I usually write long reviews when I'm trying to warn people against watching a movie or series, when I have strongly negative opinion of the subject. When it's the opposite, I feel no need for an extensive review. Watch this. It is excellent.

It's just ok. The high user score here is absolutely baffling.

I would have appreciated just a little bit more historical accuracy. I understand it's a dramatization, but the strong female character shoehorned into it doesn't really work at all. I wouldn't have liked her even if I had no idea she didn't exist irl.

Besides that, it's really difficult to care about any of the characters because we don't really know anything about them and spent no time with them. And I'd like to have seen something - *anything* before the accident happened.

There are scenes explaining nuclear reactors and the effects of radiation on the human body that are extremely heavy-handed and clearly only there for the audience.

Overall, it's just ok and really further evidence that HBO is circling the drain, at least in terms of their ability to deliver a quality show.

Craig Mazin is an idiot that blatantly lied about current political landscape in regards to reactor meltdowns. Claiming that Chernobyl is the worst nuclear event to happen AND ONLY time a meltdown happened in the initial podcast before this series was released... when Fukushima is the most current, and the worst nuclear event(s) were Bikini Atoll, Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

Japan has covered up dumping radioactive water into the ocean, and the radioactive dust that has been spread throughout Japan. Everybody that lives there, or stays there temporarily is being exposed on a daily basis, and will inevitably develop cancer, thyroid issues, and the possibly of mutations.

Extremely relevant with the happenings at Fukushima, but the idiot of a director, and anti-Soviet stances severely hurt this miniseries.

There is a blatant disregard to the evil deeds the USA and Japan have done and that affects this rating immensely.

Politics aside Episodes 1, 2, and 5 contained the best aspects, and contained the horror, despair, and the important bits that you could probably attribute to modern events. It is a shame that this show seems to portray a dire situation in a negative light with criticism of handling a national emergency that the west had no involvement with, therefore they should have held their tongues.

I'm late to this, and I cannot stress this enough if you were like me and thought this seemed like homework, WATCH THIS. It is not that. Its only 5 episodes and it is gd lightning in a bottle. To quote the writer, Craig Mazin, "Everyone knowsI'm late to this, and I cannot stress this enough if you were like me and thought this seemed like homework, WATCH THIS. It is not that. Its only 5 episodes and it is gd lightning in a bottle. To quote the writer, Craig Mazin, "Everyone knows what happened at Chernobyl but, on the whole, most people do not know how or why." Not only does this show answer that, it does so in a dramatic and entertaining way. Some dramatic license is taken, but I've learned from the accompanying podcast that even when it was taken, said license was taken in a way that still stayed true to the happenings and sentiments of the actual events.

This show is heartbreaking, brutally honest, and sometimes hard to watch. Mazin claims they held back with some of the truly more horrifying imagery and stories, and I'm inclined to believe him, but what they've shown here did still shake me quite a bit. This may be in part due to the relevance that the message of this show has to modern times. In this period of fake news, propaganda, and misdirection all being on full display, you cant help but draw some parallels to the lies that both led to the Chernobyl disaster and that made the effects of the disaster far worse than they needed to be.

Regardless of that last point, this is a beautifully crafted mini series full of expertly adapted stories, compelling performances, and scientific explanations that a J general audience can definitely understand. This truly is lightning in a bottle and I believe it easily deserves a place in the conversation for best dramatic series of the year.

The attention to detail, story telling and compelling portrayals make this a "must see" series. The show should be a big winner during awards season. Over the course of five episodes we learn of the monumental effort of hundreds of people. They bravely gave their lives to try to contain the meltdown. Without their sacrifice, the outcome could have been MUCH worse. I kept yelling at the TV for them to run far away. But we know they didnt. The average citizen had no idea what they were dealing with. The Soviet government insisted only 31 people died. More accurate estimates are between 4000 and 93,000 eventual deaths-- many the result of thyroid cancer. All I can say is watch the series for yourself... and prepare to have your heart broken. Honestly, if youFirst of all, the acting in this show is just outstanding. I just want to shout out the casting people who took the time to make sure that the actors they choose to play these important roles looked like the real-life person. Honestly, if you looked at a photo from the HBO series and another in real-life other than the quality you can’t tell the difference. Now even though the cast looks the part they need to act the part as well and well they also succeed in that department. Jared Harris, who plays Valery Legasov, is amazing in this role. He’s the main character you follow in this role and from the first time you see him to the last episode he changes so much. He learns from his mistakes and keeps on fighting for what he believes in. Stellan Skarsgard, who plays Boris Shcherbina, is also a stand out for me. Boris changes over time and you grow to love him. He also has an amazing friendship with Jared Harris and I understand that it was because the real-life people were friends but they portrayed it in such an honest way that makes it seem like they are friends in real life. Paul Ritter, who plays Anatoly Dyatlov, is just great as a bad guy. His character was the guy that even though the reactor was not stable he still kept the trial going which ended up having the reactor blow up. Every single time that he’s on-screen he made me angry and just wanted to beat him up. Just like with the casting the creator of the series, Craig Mazin, took the time to make sure that everything looked exactly like how it was back when this event happened. You can look at a photo from the past and compare it to the series and I bet you it will be accurate. This just goes to show how dedicated he was at making this show to pay tribute to the people who lost loved ones, died, or the survivors of this event. The suspense in this show is just spectacular and it works. There is a scene where three guys are going into the building and there is light music in the background but all you can hear is the Radiation Geiger going off. There are so many scenes like this and because you feel for the characters you hope they will live. This show only has five episodes in it and every single episode just gets better and better as you go along. In my opinion, the best episode is the last episode with the court trial. But honestly, all of the episodes are important and helps show you how serious this event was. Also, once you are done watching this show you will feel dumb but after another watch, you will feel smart because you learn stuff. The show explains stuff that’s hard to understand in an easy way so that everyday people will be able to understand what the characters are saying. In the end, Chernobyl is a series that everybody needs to watch at least once in their life. This show is so interesting and shows you the true story of the worst man-made catastrophes. Expand

I only saw one new movie in 2016, and that was the last one I saw. But Chernobyl sparked my interest because the town close to it(Pripyat) has been on my radar of interest for nearly a decade now, so it's kinda obvious I wanted to see it even though I knew it was going to be filled with typical Hollywood propaganda.

The TV-series itself is very well made, probably one of the best I've seen from an entertainment point of view(if you can call this disaster something to enjoy). The production value is very high and you almost felt you were taken back to the 80s. The acting was well crafted. The cinematography is good, but nothing innovative(there hasn't been any progress in that area over the last 15 years, so I don't blame this show in particular).

Now, to the plot itself. The main character, Legasov was based on a real man named Valery Legasov, a brave and talented scientist that was the leading liquidator of the disaster. His companion Boris Shcherbina, was also a real guy. Dyatlov was real, Akimov was real, Tuptunov, Fomin etc. etc. And then you have Ulana Khomyuk, a nuclear physicist, who is the most capable, the bravest, the smartest person in the series. After the accident, the following morning, by wiping some dust of the window she figures out that there has been a nuclear accident somewhere in the area close to her lab. She starts making calls, and eventually finds out everything before any accident is even reported or confirmed. She storms the authoritative headquarters and demands to see everyone involved with the cleanup. At one point she makes Legasov look like a school boy, while she looks like a professor. AND she is one hundred percent fictional. Totally made up, as is her involvement in this incident. She is supposedly a culmination of all the people that helped Legasov during the aftermath. And here is where the propaganda part comes in. The show is obviously pushing forced feminism. It's barely subtle. But most people aren't going to bother to look up her character and will be affected of how super capable a woman can be.

And I can't help but mention that the producers just happened to be of a small minority in the U.S. that Hollywood just happened to be filled with in almost every movie/show made. But I have to remind my bigoted brain that it is all PURE COINCIDENCE.

The caliber of cast gets characters rich as their potential, squeezing all their experience in, they almost carved this biography into documentary.

Chernobyl

Craig Mazin, the creator, of this hauntingly honest series seeks to document all the tragedy in one big symphony that can melt you down in its first verse. And yes, often or not, going through a sensitive content as such, the tears and gasps are anticipated. But what Mazin along with the director, Johan Renck, has pulled off is a horror. Yes, the jarring reaction was expected, but blending in with the narration is an example of pure brilliance. The cinematography is beautifully precise. For instance, the camera is always shaking showcasing how unstable the situation was and how nervous, everyone was and should be, even the observer.

Now, this doesn't catch your eye, from the first frame, but after half way through, you start realising, experiencing the uncomfortable world that has surrounded you, just because the lens is manipulating you to believe in this world, by a simple expression as such. The narration could easily be toned down, either out of respect or to make it more adaptable and edible for the viewers. And since there were only two ways to go through this.

And the maker didn't wish to keep it subtle. In fact, they don't want to, at least not this part of the series, ergo they turned the heat to 11. They deliberately cast an impeccable impression that is going to come off as an accurate documentation of what went by so rapidly and knowingly. A by-product that I adored in this adaptation is how their nature turned out to be their doom or the passage for the solace. The pretenders had to pretend all the way through, the givers gets a chance to give or pour their hearts out and storytellers a golden window to tell the truth, maybe Chernobyl, the series, isn't all murky and barbaric.

The series that HBO created to be a kind of successor to Game of Thrones. 2019 was duly crowned with this great spectacle, since the end of GOT did not please most of the Internet users. Chernobyl's main premise is to show how the lie can distort the facts and simply annul the true heroes. Technically, one of the best series ever, it is an impeccable work of direction and script. The performances are impeccable, Jared Harris probably plays the best role of his career, it is a very emotional performance. Stellan Skarsgård is the other pillar of these great performances. I honestly don't have much more to say about this series without going into spoliers, but know that this is one of the best series of all time, it's perfect in every way, you can watch it without fear. The visual effects, cast, writing and production value are exceptional. Cinematography and soundtrack give weight to its serious tone and I must commend the decision to allow the actors to use their own English accents rather than force a 'russian-glish' versioning of it. It's tough to watch due to the tragic nature of what happens but the incredible bravery of the men who worked to clear the aftermath is very moving to watch. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of the most powerful and difficult things to watch I've ever seen committed to film. I didn't know they made TV like this anymore. Like I hope many Americans born after the Chernobyl disaster have, I had a passing knowledge of the events of April 26th, 1986 in Ukraine beforehand, But after watching the show and more importantly doing some research on what was depicted accurately and what was embellished for dramatic effect, I can say that I knew very comparatively very little. And it seems that the Soviet government would have preferred it that way, as was their practice.

The show centers on the efforts of scientist Valery Legasov, brilliantly portrayed here by Jared Harris, an actor with an incredible screen presence and a talent for soft-spoken but room-shaking delivery of lines. But I had never heard of Legasov before watching this show, nor did I know that his subsequent suicide was the final catalyst for the correcting of the flaw that led in part to the incident in other surviving RBMK reactors, of which I am told nine are still in operation to this day.

I knew before that Chernobyl had perpetrators and victims, but I never knew their names. And I did not know at all that it also had heroes, like the general, Pikalov, a WW2 veteran, who volunteered to drive a truck up to the exposed reactor and measure the radiation in place of his troops, and like the three men who went into the underground, flooded by irradiated water, to drain said water and prevent a second, far more devastating explosion that could have poisoned an area of land far larger the Exclusion Zone of today, for millennia yet to come, and like the cadre of scientists represented by the fictional composite character of Ulana Khomyuk who helped Legasov pick up the pieces. And I learned that this disaster could have been prevented, that there were flaws known in the design of the RBMK reactor years before. Covered up as a matter of "national pride" in the design. "A nuclear disaster is not possible in the Soviet Union", indeed. It's difficult to believe that this show's writer, Craig Mazin, could go from the likes of Scary Movie 3 to this, but here we are. I can only hope he has more work of this caliber up his sleeve.

This series, even with its artistic license, manages to be more haunting by far then then any depiction I have seen before of the infamous Exclusion Zone, such as in Call of Duty 4 and the STALKER series, the scenes of the irradiated firefighters and plant workers, the sight of the exposed, burning reactor core, and the evacuation and abandonment of the city of Pripyat more disturbing by far then any nuclear mutant that fiction could conjure up, merely by implication of what it meant, what could have been avoided, and what WAS avoided. It is harrowing because it is true, regardless of what the series abridged or altered.

Interspersed with this horror are profound moments of camaraderie and friendship, bleak sorrow and even the occasional black comedy of a quintessentially Russian stripe. It is as compelling as it is disquieting.

It is also important series in light of events that have occurred since its airing. The efforts of political apparatchiks to lie, to shift blame and to cover their asses did not begin or end with the Soviet Union, however infamous for such it might have been, and has not faded with the revelations of Chernobyl's cause or from any other incident. Jared Harris as Legasov asks the audience, "what is the cost of lies?" A question that is by no means rhetorical and yet difficult to answer in its entirety. But I choose to believe the cost of lies is quantifiable, in lives, in land, in money, and as Legasov points out, in truth. Sooner or later, that debt has to be paid, and the costs of lying about things like nuclear meltdowns, phonecalls to foreign officials, voter fraud, viral pandemics and treasonous insurrections may yet incur a cost we have not foreseen. As someone not born in a former Eastern Bloc country there is a level at which I may not fully understand the chain of irresponsibility that lead to the destruction of the No. 4 reactor and all that followed. But as an American I'd like to think I understand what happens when the people who are supposed to be in charge don't do their jobs right, and this series is a good way for a Western audience to learn about that. I can holy hope they're smart enough to take the hint, and I think the jury is still out on that.
