The first thing most will notice is that the production values have improved significantly with the fight scenes in particular looking much more realistic and, with a bit more experience under their belts, the main cast certainly stepped up their performances. The writing, while as fast paced and humorous a one would expect form Josh Whedon, also had a bit more depth to it allowing for some real character development. On top of all this season two also saw the introduction of Spike, a character that would quickly become a fan favourite.

This is when Buffy really became must watch television.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Season 2 of Buffy the vampire slayer came with one of the best story lines a TV Series could offer at any given time. And the arrival of Spike and Drusilla (Mainly Spike) makes this season of Buffy even better. And if you thought that it couldn't get any better, well it does. When Angel loses his soul the stakes get even higher, it's truly a once in a lifetime season. This season comes with more depth and one of the best assembled cast in any TV Show. The show is more realistic, the structure of the episodes are better and who doesn't love James Masters as Spike and David Boreanaz as Angel, and the fact that Angel and Spikes past is looked at in more depth (Because Spike wasn't around in season 1) makes this show ever better. Season 2 eclipses the first in every way, the comedies better, the actions better, hell, even the dialogue is better. Given the circumstances of the first season, Joss Whedon really had to improve this season in order to lure fans in, and boy did he deliver. Joss Whedon is a classic director. Expand

The show really kicks into gear here with the main characters being given allot more depth. The chemistry between these 2 is apparent, especially Buffy who plays her role fantastically throughout the season. The effects are still a little sloppy for most of the first half of the season but the overall improvement can be noticed. Overall: Season 2 is a huge improvement on the first season, further cementing Buffy's already solid reputation. My hats off to Sarah Michelle Gellar for a stunning performance in this season, clearly outshining the rest. Expand

Buffy's second year improves on everything from the previous season. There's a whole lot of twists and turns, of emotional highs, of witty, memorable one-liners, and of excellent character development, from Buffy to Xander to Willow to Cordelia.

This season made Buffy popular and it is also the reason I became a fan. This time we get even more good characters in form of Spike and Drusilla in addition to the gang. Spike is one of the best vampires in fiction. He has the best development of all characters in this show and was transferred to Angel season 5 after Buffy ended with season 7 (Story was continued in comic books). Drusilla is an interesting mad character with lots of facets. I will praise Juliet Landau for her performance as I have seen nothing like this back then. This season is the story of Buffy and Angel as it is about Spike and Drusilla. Many things for further season were set up. Spike takes the first steps to an obsession with Buffy. Spike and Drusillas relationship gets flashed out. Angel and Buffy face the problems of being different while being also a couple for the ages. There is a character I wont spoil. You can say he reawakens in this season. He is a villain you will enjoy and love to hate. They used him again in Angel and in flashbacks because he was so intense and diabolical sadistic. He is the master of abuse and (psychological) torture. Like I say they know how to make good villains in this show. The ending of the season is some of the most intense moments in the series as it is in TV. It got me emotional attached and I am not ashamed to had tears in my eyes even as man. I do the rest of the cast injustice if I don't praise them. Buffy, Angel, Giles, Willow and Xander are one of the best casts in TV. With Joss Whedon they can shine. I repeat myself by saying the intelligent stories, character developments / interactions and great humor work well here. He polished his formula. Overall this is were Buffy gets to 10/10 territory and I can fully recommend you this season. Expand

"Buffy" is the best show of the year about kids in high school, with the most refreshingly original dialogue and pop cultural references. [17 Nov 1997]

Its second season has so far been fabulous — even funnier and scarier than the first.
