While some steps were taken to improve upon the previous season, the extremely darker tone that follows the show, plus the almost complete exclusion of Amanda Peets character from the season, really held it back from being great. I personally love what Azaria and Tyrell Jackson do this season as they've both clearly improved upon their characters from the previous season. I personally love what Azaria and Tyrell Jackson do this season as they've both clearly improved upon their characters from the previous season. However the loss of Amanda Peet for about 99% of the season really shows that the series needs that 3rd character to help drive it along. The very few scenes she was in with Azaria are easily the highlight of the season and they have great chemistry with each other. It's just a shame the writers decided to focus so little on her. It probably has to do with the very dark tone the series starts to take towards the end of the season. The last episode in particular feels almost out of place for the vibe the rest of the series gives off and almost ruined it for me. Fortunately it seems the writers didn't go completely off the deep end here and will be bringing it back down a notch for season 3. Hopefully with more Peet this time around. The season is worth watching since it's only 8 episodes again but this season is a bit different from the previous one and fan of the first season who may not have IFC to watch it might be a bit surprised as to where it goes in the end. "Brockmire" has always been able to deliver some of the best jokes around ... but now one of the funniest shows on TV is becoming one of its most thoughtful.

The emotional balance of the season is very different, even though it’s leading somewhere rewarding and meaningful by the end.
