I love it. Hear me out. I was constantly told how smart and good of a show it was by friends, family and media. So I watched the first season, but then stopped just before the third season out of boredom. I finally finished the show, and I can't expressHear me out. I was constantly told how smart and good of a show it was by friends, family and media. So I watched the first season, but then stopped just before the third season out of boredom. I finally finished the show, and I can't express how disappointed I am. There were very few stellar moments, and most of those were in the first season. Here are my major gripes with the show:

Characters IMO the most important aspect of a show, and BB does not have many interesting or well developed characters. Skyler is an unrealistically **** wife. Jesse is made out to be overly stupid and simplistic, with random emotional outbursts used to cheaply propel the otherwise stagnant plot points. The show tries to hard to make him look stupid, which prevents him from ever saying anything meaningful or deep.

Walt is an absolute mess of a character. Seasons 1-4 he's a bumbling, nerdy, sympathetic character and then season 5 he turns into a "monster" because the show demands it. Most supporting characters are one-dimensional. The "why" for Walt's actions disappears after season 1, and then is only given in season 5 as a fan-service by regurgitating what forums/reviewers mentioned as a sort of "yeah, that's what we meant all along". Yet the argument for the lust for power isn't supported by the actual show, since there aren't many examples of Walt feeling powerful, or becoming empowered by making meth. He's always scared for his life, answering to bigger dogs.

Jesse's friends are just stereotypical meth-heads, zero depth. The coolest bad guy, Tuco, dies way too early.

Gus is just silent/ruthless, so underdeveloped for the sake of "mystery". Contrast this with Ben Linus from LOST who plays a similar character, except way more believably and to far better results.

There's a constant revolving door of characters because, hey, half of the non-essential characters were killed last season for shock value.

2. The Pacing After the very good first season, the show starts rinsing and repeating the same formula:

"Jesse, we need 2 cook" -> someone makes an unrealistically stupid mistake that puts the boys in trouble -> buddy hijinks galore -> "Chemistry **** haha" -> walt has lie to skyler.

Throw some "artistic" shots of NM fauna, awkward breakfast scenes, expository dialogue, and you've got a seasons 2-4. Also, there is very little good dialogue, it's usually just expository and rarely characterizes the characters beyond their initial caricature-izations. The show just drags on, and intense episodes are a rarity.

3. The lack of Intellectualism Besides some "smart" references (Levoisier, some chemistry tidbits) there is nothing smart about the show. Scenes are always screaming at you (This guy is a jerk! Look at how jerky he is! did you notice!! Oh, Look at how angry this character is!!! LOOK!!! CAN YOU SEE????? The show assumes the viewer is retarded and just highlights everything to the point of silliness. It lacked subtlety, and without subtlety there is no complexity.

4. Nothing is explained. Nothing. What is Gus's motivation. What is Mikes motivation, what happened, who is his daughter? What happened at Grey Matter? Anything meaningful about Walt's past.

5. The Bad Guys Shallow. One-dimensional. Temporary. Unexplained. After Tuco's brilliant and temporary tenure, Gus was just an underwhelming attempt at "mysterious" and was totally unexplained, which was super annoying. Why does Gus do what he does? Does he have a family? What caused him to act all robotic and ruthlessly? What was he like in Chile? What was his relationship like with the "hermano" that the Cartel killed? Why?

So, could you please change my view?… Expand

Slow burns are not my forte at all, I think most are boring with nothing going on with no stake whatsoever until the last two episodes of the first season, but Breaking Bad is a show that plays its hand immediately and never folds. Each episode is around 45 minutes, but each one feels like 20 because it's always doing something new, characters constantly changing, viewpoints shifting, trust diminishing, lies creeping forever until it reaches a boiling point, and of course, the transformation of the main character from a family man just trying to make his family money before he succumbs to his cancer into a cold calculating drug king with greater ambitions, or perhaps he had always been that man. Even the slowest episodes are filled with character development and fun interactions that keep you hooked through the whole ride. If you haven't heard it before I'll say it again for you, watch this show.… Expand

No other show has managed continuously top itself with each new season. The stakes are constantly raised while always being completely true to the original characters. While the remain consistent, they also change in a gradual and extremely honest way that few pieces of media have the ability to portray. The puns have probably been used plenty but Breaking Bad truly is a chemical reaction or gradual and methodically planned character change that amounts to an unforgettable conclusion. The show truly is a roller coaster and you'd be doing yourself a disservice to not give it the chance it deserves.… Expand

Extremely overrated. I would say watch the first season, and then you've seen what you need to see. It's clear the writers didn't have a plan after that. Cranston and Paul are fun to watch, but doesn't really have legs.

Breaking Bad is the sort of television that all aspirational pieces will be compared to. Those that measure up, will be counted among the best pieces ever made. There is so much meaning to be derived from the show, from themes of change,Breaking Bad is the sort of television that all aspirational pieces will be compared to. Those that measure up, will be counted among the best pieces ever made. There is so much meaning to be derived from the show, from themes of change, choice, relationships, and more. Too many to list. This show could serve an English class better than many of the classics currently prescribed. Walter's evolution, the ebb and flows of his relationship with Jesse, and more bring a deeply emotional element to it. Combined with the tension and action through the show, coupled with the cerebral manner in which the characters often behave, will keep you on the edge of your seat one moment, satisfied the next, then deflated. The apotheosis of the show was arguably the transition into a fifth season. Not only had the show arguably reached a very strong ending point at the end of the fourth season, it was hard to imagine what the show could use to fill another entire season, which were treated more like two mini seasons. If the show had ended there, it still might have been a 10, a perfect show, particularly because it wouldn't have had to been measured against itself with a fifth season! In a theoretical sense, it still would have been a 9.5, knowing what we know now.

But Gilligan and everyone involved in the fifth season took it to a new level. Not only was the fifth season a nearly perfect thread to tie up all ends, it elevated all the stakes, unleashed the characters to their fullest potential, and saw Walters arc completed in a dramatic fashion. The back half of the season had multiple jaw dropping moments. I remember speaking with a friend, after watching the third to last episode Ozymandias. With game of thrones fresh on my mind at the time, and at it's peak, I mentioned how most shows manage to have one, maybe two, key, pivotal, shocking, incredible, emotional, ultimate moments/scenes a season, and more often, over the course of the show. Game of thrones had recently had the Red Wedding, which qualified.

Ozymandias had four or five. In one episode. Breaking Bad was able to elevate and transform what epic television was capable of, redefining the concept itself. Breaking Bad is like watching our own lives, compacted and boiled down to all the key elements, and brought to life perfectly and excitedly. Breaking Bad, is easily, the best show I have ever watched. Character development, The Characters, The Story. It is the literal definition of a perfect show. The Story is exciting, and surprising. The Story is exciting, and surprising. You never know what is coming next, it has you guessing. You witness every character grow with the series. Walter, his wife, Jessie, his son, Saul, Mike. The most development went into Jessie, and most of all Walter. You witness them change entirely by the end.

Do I recommend this show, yes because it is perfection and I consider it the best show ever. Only show I consider a perfect 10/10.

The only negative I could even think for the show, is there is a stretch of time where there seems to be nothing happening. But this is needed, for drama and character development so I don't hold it against it.… Expand

Overall, a great show, albeit flawed. Not the greatest of all time, but top ten if only because there's so much crap out there.

Obviously, the show has created literal cultural icons, impressive for a show with such humble beginnings. There are some issues though, like the amount of filler, story arcs that go nowhere (Marie's stealing), the use of implausible coincidences to push the story forward, events that require the suspension of disbelief (like how Walt manages to not get caught), issues with the timeline (the whole series takes place in a year + one more year of Walt's disappearance, and Hank recovers from a debilitating gunshot wound in a matter of weeks or months.

Better Call Saul picks up the pieces though and makes the universe even better.

I'd give this show a 7.9 if I could, but 8 is fine.… Expand

On my first viewing of this series, I didn't like it. I don't care for drugs and drug wars. Now re-watching, I can see why it has been praised highly. Still don't care about drugs, but I enjoy the character development. Solid 8/10 for me.
