As stated by many other people, it started off on bit of an awkward foot. The humour didn't quite land for me and I thought I would be another "adult animated comedy" where the humour comes by how extraordinarily dumb and morally corrupt the characters are. There is still a bit of that mind you, but the show really starts getting into its stride by the send half of the first season and by season 2 onwards it became one of my favourite shows.

The show tackles some dark topics and does so with honesty and earnest that I can't help but feel for the characters. They feel like real people with real emotional and psychological problems in spite of the fact that they are animated and half of them are anthropomorphic animals. You get they sense that the show isn't doing it for shock value or for cheap emotional gut punches. They really do have something to say about how people are affected by the choices they make. Over time the comedy started to gel with me more as well. I don't know if it's because I started to like the characters more or if it genuinely got more funny to me, but I did notice that I started to have some laughs and even started quoting a line or two from the show with my friends. This is a show that really embodies the term 'adult cartoon.' It isn't for adults just because it is inappropriate for children. It's for adults because it explores themes that only adults can appreciate; like mental health, substance abuse and emotional abuse. It does so, because it actually has a message about these topics and not just to be 'edgy.' This is why I and so many others love this cartoon about a talking horse that used to be in a 90's sitcom.

Yes it is whacky and zany and goofy however this show is like the behind the scenes of after the joke. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is so bad I made a metacritic account This show is unlogical, people claim these characters are so real but they are really not. Dumb world, full of "furries", characters are not interesting or engaging apart from the dog(mr.pickles) which may only be engaging because he's a dog ?. Horrible people, horrible decision, don't watch it. Gets worst and worst as the show goes on, the longer the show goes the more stupid the everyday plot becomes . Expand

This is an animated series about anthropomorphic animals, which for me is much more alive than many others LIVING actors.
Bojack Horseman makes you think about the meaning of life, problems, your mistakes, possibly future mistakes and teaches you how to act in certain situations and in general in life.
After watching some episodes, you plunge into a certain apathy. This is only series, that can drive you into depression, and then get out of it.
In general, this series just needs to be watched and depressed with it.

Bojack Horseman is perhaps the most overrated animated show of all time.

To bite a keen line: This is a stupid person's idea of what an intelligent show looks like.

Despite the praise that Bojack recieves for its approach of human issues, its clever humour, and its heartfelt writing, it handles each of these with a persistent inelegance, and lack of genuine daring.

In reality, the emotional approach is caught somewhere between carelessly hipfire and outright jarring; the toneless humour is borrowed straight from Hollywood's creative landfil; and the clever writing is... I mean, it's simply completent writing, and not much more.

Many people exclaimed that the series became better after the first half of the first season. In reality, it just became more generic - dropping the funny-animal humour that clearly failed to gain traction - settling into life as yet another show that bites the majority of its humour and style from the most marketable and easily adaptable adult cartoons of the past decade; and flexes emotional depth by shoehorning in the most approachable human issues it can find (while blatantly skirting any of the more risky or difficult ones). Sure, it does make more of an effor to delve into the human condition; but it does so with praise-driven desperation, and with no more skill than is needed to trick the inexperienced.

This lack of originality is (clearly) easy to miss, if you've got a small pool from which to draw your comparisons.

In short, Bojack Horseman is about as smart as a wet fart, and as tactful as a slap on the nose (Perhaps with an rolled newspaper). It's furbait, it's Oscarbait, and ultimately, it's a minor peak in the greater landscape of adult animation; elevated by a cultism that stems more from a need for thoughtful entertainment, than from the successful execution of such.

Is it outright bad? No, it's not; it's simply alright, though far too caught up in its own aspirations - and, quite frankly, so are many of its fans.

It came off more as just bashing on Bojack and disregarding the environment he was cultivated in. It shifted the explanation for the cause of all his destructive behaviour from a holistic standpoint to a purely an individualized one. And I don't mean that the writing just solely focused on the standpoint of Bojack and the people he hurt. The episodes also utterly avoided talking about today's America in any sort of capacity aside from a throwaway joke.

The penultimate episode was the most emotionally devastating one to me... But that also made everything before it meaningless. In the end, nothing matters. Everyone will cling to life and to some sort of meaning, but in the end we all will die. Yet if you slam that sort of message on the table with frankly a cosmic horror level of imagery (the black slime)... doesn't that have quite an effect on everything you have made before? Everything from Bojack's alcoholism, Diana's depression, Mr. Peanutbutter's denial, Princess Carolyn's workaholicism, Todd's zany schemes... In the end it will all be for nothing. They too will be consumed by the black slime and jump into the void, even if they regret it like Secretariat did.

The scene in the fake church turned out to not only be a warning, but also symbolic. Almost in the same way Stephen King addressed the reader in the final volume of the Dark Tower Saga to not to turn the page. This story had come to a close. Whatever loose threads this series may have had ultimately were too weak to tie something around. Yes, Penny's trauma was real. But even in those annoying reporters' eyes she was only a tool to use in regards to a maybe breakout story on a washout 90's star. And even those reporter's personal... relationship could not resolve in a satisfying manner. Thinking further, if we truly explored Princess Caroline's relationship with Judah in earnest, would it really have looked like the happy end we got presented with no context? And that's not even talking about Todd, Mr. Peanutbutter, and so many others in the series...

In the end, Bojack may have gotten what we consider justice for his actions. But did it do anything good in the end? Sarah Lynn is still dead. We don't know if Kelsey Jannings got a meaningful movie out. Not to mention that Gina's fate in Hollywoob is still unknown. And whatever happened to Hollyhock let alone Penny in the end?

All in all, this last half of the season is non canon in my mind. It did not resolve the threads left in the story to any sort of satisfactory end. The ones it did address it did so in a way that seemed to focus purely on causing Bojack misery, and that is unworthy of the fantastic cast of characters this show has built up. Raphael Bob-Waksberg gave me a sense of despair with this show. A feeling that nothing mattered and that nobody could be redeemed, no matter

Little did I know, I would be journeying through one of the greatest shows of all time. I've never had issues with substance/drug abuse, but I've tasted the highs and lows of stardom and been through more than one bout of depression. I related to pretty much everything in this show, besides the drugs and alcohol obviously. This wistful, dark, hopelessly hopeful tale of a horse that's endlessly beaten down but somehow finds a way to pick himself back up is one of the greatest fables ever put to screen and done through some of the most creative plot-lines and one of the most visually striking shows of all time. I laughed until I teared up, I teared up until I cried, and I took forever to finish the final season because I didn't want to say goodbye to my dear friend Bojack.

I love you, Bojack. I have infinite gratitude to the wonderful geniuses that blessed the world with this masterpiece. It got me through more than anyone could ever know.

Bojack at first might be the stupid animated series about a drunk horse (and this is, in part, correct), but the more you watch it, the more you fall in love with the lives of the protagonists and you get to understand the simple, yet complex, world of Hollywoo. But, i think this show got the fame it deserved because it makes you feel something, which is more than a laugh: infact, i don't think i have ever watched an animated series and i had felt the same i felt with bojack: it is deep, really deep, it makes you feel real emotions. During the episodes, Bojack is facing dark topics and psycological problems and this introspective is what the thing that really wins you over.
Bojack is really a genius show. If you're new on Netflix, defenitely check this first, you won't regret it.

One of the best TV shows I have ever watched. No other show can go so seamlessly from silly animal/celebrity jokes, to absolute despair and hopelessness.

The show starts off seemingly slow (although is more enjoyable in subsequent rewatches) with the first 6 or-so episodes of S1, but once it reaches that first penultimate episode climax, it never looks back. What seemed like another adult animated show at first, becomes one of the most witty, thought provoking, hilarious, and soul-crushing series TV has to offer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bojack Horseman is one of those shows you decide to watch because you are bored, but as you watch you slowly get mesmerised by the world it entails. Every season it ends with what seems to be Bojack getting better but everytime he manages to pull himself down to a new low while dragging someone else down with him.

He ends up developing these dysfunctional codependent relationships with a range of characters that all want what's best for him, but his trauma always stops things from ever being healthy.

Then, to avoid exclusively being a melancholic drama, the show employs common stylistic humour that both maintains a whackiness to the universe, while also breaking up the brutality of what the show is illustrating.

As popular as this show is, I believe it is sorely underated.

It's surprising how good this gets, and is a great character study on a man going through internal struggles of existentialism and a cautionary tale of how poor decisions lead to bad consequences. I love how much care the writers put into each character in the show, they're filled with nuance and conflict. Their are times that the show does lose me though, Diana especially gets on my nerves around the 4th season, even if she is a better character in the 5th, and Bojack at times feels like his decisions only move the plot along because the writers wanted him to, otherwise their'd be no conflict in that situation, he can be uncharacteristically arrogant after learning an important life lesson just to drive the conflict of the whole show and it can be jarring at times.
