    I generally liked this season.

I felt the individual filler episodes really improved. Last season the writers seemed to be mostly repeating themselves, but here they try some new things which usually pay off. Unfortunately, the overall story arc is the weakest of the group. A lot of it feels like a poor retread of last season. The finale is interesting, but I felt they spent way more time than they needed leading up to this.

Jaimie Alexander gets to play double roles in this and until now I haven't realized how much a good actress she is. This season really gets into Jane Doe's character more than ever before.

The wisecracking RIch Dotcom (Ennis Esmer) finally becomes a cast regular, and he and prickly straight man Patterson (Ashley Johnson) make a great comedy team. Longtime thorn in the team's side Matthew Weitz is now the director of the FBI and he brings a new dynamic in comparison to his predecessors, being ladder climbing and more humorous.

They continue the Reade (Rob Brown) and Zapata (Audrey Esparza) romantic tension, despite the two characters not having much chemistry. I felt the character of Blake Crawford was really poorly utilized given the amount of time spent on her last season. Jane's daughter is weirdly dropped without even a mention.

Most frustrating element of the is the main villain: motives are tenuous, annoying personality, and she kills so many underlings that you wonder why anyone works for her.

I'd rank this season on the same level as season 3 but weaker than seasons 1 and two. If you're beginning to question your loyalty to the show as it moves farther away from the original concept, I'd recommend you still give this a second chance just for the individual episodes.
