I don't like much of the writing, some acting feels off for me, and I just am not engaged with Kate Kane and what she's doing. Once season 2 is over I will review it once I am done watching it, because so far I prefer the second season.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Batwoman is one of my top 10 favorite new shows of 2019, one of my top 5 favorite superhero shows, my 2nd favorite DC Comics show, and one of my favorite shows of all time. The acting is outstanding especially from Rachel Skarsten and Ruby Rose. Nicole Kang also gave a terrific performance. The stunts are awesome and very well executed. The costumes were stupendous especially the ones that Ruby Rose, Rachel Skarsten, Nicole Kang, Camrus Johnson, Elizabeth Anweis, Meagan Tandy, and Kayla Ewell wore. The makeup and hairstyling was excellent especially on Ruby Rose, Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Kayla Ewell, and Nicole Kang. The writing and storylines are superb, I love the alternate Earth sister storyline. An A+ first season to me. Expand

I genuinely enjoyed this, but I admit that this first season was finding it's legs.

Generally, this is part of the Arrowverse. What makes this show differ from the others is that It's definitely the darkest and most violent. Seriously, it has THE darkest episodes in the Arrowverse. This is also a show that heavily emphasizes story. The writers had a vision and I appreciated that they went

Generally, this is part of the Arrowverse. What makes this show differ from the others is that It's definitely the darkest and most violent. Seriously, it has THE darkest episodes in the Arrowverse. This is also a show that heavily emphasizes story. The writers had a vision and I appreciated that they went all in.

However, like most of the Arrowverse shows, a hammer is taken to real world logic and consequences in order to get to where the writers want. Batwoman is the most egregious of all the shows when it comes to it. The show tries to be serious, but it's hard to take it so when it's so cartoonish with it's logic.

Standalone stories are hit and miss. There are some pretty good ones. They do a better job with with the Executioner's origins than the entire long setup done in Gotham. Others are half-baked. A couple antagonists' first live-action depictions don't do them justice.

The cast is mostly good. Ruby Rose is fine as Kate Kane/Batwoman. The supporting characters Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson), Batwoman's "guy-in-the-chair," and Mary Hamilton (Nicole Kang), Kate's step-sister, become likable, but it takes the writers half a season to really find them. Luke, though likable and well acted by Johnson, suffers from being a completely stereotypical superhero tech guy. Probably the strongest character in this is the main villain White Alice. Rachel Skarstein delivers a hell of a performance, and the character has a hell of a backstory. Admittedly, her habit of quoting lines from "Alice in Wonderland" gets old.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 caused the show to end before all episodes were filmed. Expect a less satisfying conclusion to what should've been a self-contained season.

Overall, I recommend this. Batwoman is an entertaining show, which does manage to feel different from the other CW superhero shows. If you like them in general, you should give this a shot. I just hope the story to be a little less soapy next season.

I'm dumbfounded as to how this show and The Flash can exist in the same universe. Even if this wasn't a comicbook show it has the worst writing and plots I've ever seen in a TV show that lasted more than 6 episodes.

God awful. Poor Ruby Rose, her talent could have been put to such better use.

Instead of the show relying on a capable hero standing her own ground, it constantly has to throw in weak and completely unnecessary "stings" that are absolute, without doubt or remorse openly sexist to a degree near racism, and pit man vs woman instead of hero vs villain, and force a woman to clearly adopt

Instead of the show relying on a capable hero standing her own ground, it constantly has to throw in weak and completely unnecessary "stings" that are absolute, without doubt or remorse openly sexist to a degree near racism, and pit man vs woman instead of hero vs villain, and force a woman to clearly adopt super traditional douche bag male stereotypes (which doesn't this undermine the whole principle that women are as capable as men?). It destroys the characters individuality and stuffs frivolous attempts for the writers to "show their wokeness" in search for Twitter high-fives, and it ruins the whole show. They should take note from Catwoman in Dark Knight Rises. She is all female, and all powerful. A great character.

The writing in this show is so completely transparent in its pathetic attempt to rally current social radicalized niches against one-another instead of just being a great, well written show with a great lead and some great support cast too.

Huge disappointment, and I blame almost all issues on the pathetic writing team. Someone please fire them all and ban them from ever writing again. I heard McDonalds is hiring?

Batwoman, the actor, is cast well. The rest are not. The plot is incredibly predictable. There are inconsistencies and actions by characters which are nonsensical. A cookie cutter superhero show which will only be enjoyably to those too young or too recluse to have seen any other superhero show. Too bad.

Holy moly this wasn't worse than the trailer... but it was close.
Please someone drop some money for acting lessons, this level of "quality" can't be intentional. Maybe its the writing, I mean these actors can't all be that bad.

But hey it's woke, that's enough to get the zealots to watch these days. So enjoy, I guess.

I was super-excited with Ruby Rose when i read she was picked. Turns out she has a pretty face, a badass look but she doesnt convince me with her acting. There is something missing.
So now I'm stuck; on the one hand i dont want the show to get cut off coz of the terrible reviews (including mine) thus its rare to actually get a lesbian leading character and a superhero. On the other hand, i find myself not eager to see the next episode.

Critics are nothing but bloggers that have no real education nor experience to critique the art, production value or cinematic quality of a release. Whatever score that is derived is meaningless to the demographic that the creation is trying to target. The Audience is the true critic, and what the response here tells me is that the viewer is tired of characters being used to carry out a sexual role agenda. The Audience does not care about the sexual preference of a Superhero and is focused on the comic book style action and storylines that are synonymous with being a Superhero character. As long as garbage like this BATWOMAN continued to get released, the Audience will continue to voice extreme displeasure and realize that the Critics are also part of the problem. Do not waste your valuable time with this BATWOMAN tripe, nor with the spew these Critics spread. Expand

This show is so bad it's good, like a train wreck where you want to look away but can't and then you can't unsee it. A progressive dream with all the stereotypes an SJW would want and it's very PC. I do wish they'd fix her Bat Hat though 'cause it kind of looks like a light bulb.

I went in with a neutral stance.
So far, I love the arrowverse, flash, supergirl is okay, but I assumed the trend would be: good, good, decent, good.
But I was wrong. If batwoman was a man, people could call it "a fantasy for toxic masculinity", and that's what this is. Toxic femininity. Identity politics so over the top, that it just turns me away. I don't care about it, you can

    Toxic femininity.

I don't care about it, you can have your stupid politics as long as you keep it on a very low pitch.

Critics only liking it because it's political.
If this was pro-Trump or whatever this stuff is supposed to be, the critics would give it a 1.

The fact that critics rate this higher than the Joker just shows this show is a dog whistle to the extremists.

Stop your politics, because it's not profitable.
How many comics following this nonsense political stuff have gone away? Right, all of them.

Gender identity nonsense mumbo jumbo doesn't sell.
Bad acting and cringe don't sell either.
This show shouldn't make it to season 3 if they continue this nonsense.

Everyone involved, of course, might fare better if they had a decent script, proper lighting, well-choreographed fight scenes and sets that didn’t look as if they had been nailed together from whatever was left after Michael Keaton left the building in 1989. ... For now, though, pure and perfect trash is what we need – and Batwoman provides.
  2. The show doesn’t seem to know how to handle Bruce’s absence, so he’s mentioned at every turn, making Kate feel less like a person with her own story than someone grafted onto his. ... The visual palette is all muddled grays or treacly, warmly lit flashbacks. The fight scenes lack tension and dynamism, relying on quick cuts and multiple angles to manufacture a false sense of energy. There’s also a missing spark of chemistry among the cast.

Batwoman has a welcome amount of openness and information sharing from the get-go. The series also does surprisingly well with establishing several key supporting characters. ... Around Kate Kane and Rose, there's a question mark. The camera is intrigued, gravitating toward her angular features, spiky hair and convincing swagger. I'm not sure she's as good at conveying the required authority or enigmatic mystery.
