This season promises to be darker, funnier and more immediate. Truly worth the wait. Expand

Absolute masterclass. Hader has revealed himself to be an true artist through the entirety of this show. Gripping performances, gritty uncomfortable closeups, and writing that is darkly funny and heartbreaking. Really leaves a mark.

Early in its third season Barry enters the Parthenon of series that have obtained the degree of storytelling that is perfect. It's firing on all cylinders. Bill Hader's direction alone puts this in the league of the best dramatic series of recent years. It may be billed as a comedy, and there are many comedic elements, but the desperation that seeps through each character is indelible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The evolution of this show is very symptomatic to the American series as an "art" form. While the first season was iconoclastic and realistic, and drew heartfelt parallels between the pathetic nihilism facing war vets and wanna-be actors, it jumped the proverbial shark in season 2 and veered into full-blown cartoonism: Garrish one-dimensional characters (unbearable gay cliché Hank), loud inflation of gratuitous yet nonsensical violence, constant terrible 180 degree plot twists (Cousineau wanna kill, protect, kill, protect, kill, protect Barry...) have ruined a once nuanced and finely-tuned show that ran like chamber music.
Sadly, music blaring horns, drums and one-tonal motifs has always appealed to the immature populace. And this is not an exception.

With his relationship strained and unable to find acting work, Barry returns to contract killing, but his past may be about to catch up with him.

After a three year absence Barry returns with an intense third season full of unexpected twists and turns. There is rarely a dull moment with this show.

This is a show about Karma. It is brilliantly written and acted. Winkler and Root are masterful. It is more shakepear or Greek comedy than a modern show. But works on all levels.

Television brillaince in its finest form. Never have I seen anything that encompasses quality in all aspects of production on TV as Barry's 3rd Season.

When I started watching Barry, never in a million years did I think I'd end up seeing so many crazy powerful moments. I mean wow, some of these episodes have left me completely drained, feeling like I'd just survived a few weeks alone in the wilderness. I love how trippy a lot of the season was, almost like they added a little Ron/Lily vibe to the whole season (in varying amounts). Hader is just brilliant, he won an Emmys for S1 and S2 and I'd bet everything I own that he wins again for this. I've been totally blown away by him (and Adam Scott in Severance), it's cool seeing traditionally comedic actors killing it in more dramatic roles.

Also the Beignet dude is one of my favorite random side characters of all time and I'll watch that dude in anything.

Amazing season with some of the best acting I‘ve seen in a long time. The show deserves more attention than it gets honestly. Also I have absolutely no clue how it’s going to go from here. One thing is for sure- it isn’t really a comedy anymore.

Barry is a funny and dark comedy about a retired hitman. Yeah, full on jokes in this masterpiece.

Fantastic! The writers keep proving that, however rare, good scripts ARE possible in modern Hollywood.

    A thrilling concoction of pitch black humor and nail-biting suspense. [9 - 22 May 2022, p.5]

Barry’s runtime always whizzes by like a hitman’s bullet, the laughs constantly killing and the tone hitting an elusive bullseye. Aside from these richly layered plot developments, the characterization and performances of Barry, Gene, Hank, and, above all Sally, help this hilarious and occasionally heart wrenching dramedy once again — just like its title character — hit the mark.

There’s good TV, there’s great TV, and then there’s the new Barry, a magnificent season of television that will unquestionably find its way onto your own personal best of the year list.
