The dumb child/husband subplot ruined the show, also marionette puppets apparently defy gravity.*
The show is pretty boring and uninteresting. Terrible sci-fi - it's more like a highschool drama set in space

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel like this show is something that you watch when literally nothing else is peaks your interest; which is exactly what happened to me while I wait for my preferred shows to return to their normal schedule.

The acting was pretty good, but the context and the side stories were extremely boring. I feel like dividing each episode up to shine light on the side stories heavily takes away to the purpose -- which is a mission to mars centric story/show. The side stories were just bland and easily predictable as if it's just bloat. Not much effort was put into them. If more effort was put into individual roles each character had in the mission things would be different. All you know is a glimpse into the characters personal struggles and the bare minimum job roles (commander, engineer, botanist, an astronaut to represent China, and Ram I don't know exactly as it is unclear).

One thing in particular that drove me absolutely insane is the tether. Why in the seven hells are these ASTRONAUTS equipped with only a 5 foot tether? Seriously! I'd imagine if this were real life there would be numerous tethers available at varying lengths.

On the topic of astronauts, the dialogue is too simplistic. You would expect a higher level of conversation, but Netflix had to make this comprehensible for younger audiences. However, at the cost of the intelligence and critical thinking. That degrades the overall score as this is one of the most critical items in a story -- again, the dialogue.

Personally, this is not interesting in the slightest and I will not be watching s2. This show was extremely overhyped and incredibly overrated, no doubt. Now that I have seen what I am working with here, I would rather re-watch better tv shows and movies.

It's not without it's flaws just like every show but I find it entertaining. This is not your typical sci-fi so look elsewhere if that's what you are looking for. This is about astronauts and their back stories and sacrifices they've made to journey to Mars. Each episode has it's obstacle to overcome by the crew but that's what keeps me watching.

Oh Netflix. What's wrong with you. Only mediocre or bad series. This just missed a flop. The characters are full of clichés and are supposed to make the long journey to Mars even if they don't all like each other? Who comes up with that??? Mrs. Swank is getting heated up here again.

Clichéd schmaltz. How someone can throw so much money (the budget is definitely there) and talent (the two leads are solid) AWAY on something so talentless, tasteless and blatantly derivative, is beyond me.

They are "trainning" for two years to make an extremely important mission to Mars, and the first opportunity they have, the cliche China/Russia bAdgUYs kicks in, together with all the SJW nonsense. My God, what is happening?

    A good drama entertainment

a great space to improve , it is a good series and it deserves a second season.

Where to start, the acting was terrible, it’s a low budget sci-fi show, and to make it even worse they threw in all that SJW nonsense again. I couldn’t make it past the third episode, it got that bad.

Ugh! What a melodramatic piece of crap. What is it with these sci-fi shows that feel the need to pad themselves with family/relationship **** over the **** mission? They're going to Mars for **** sake! That is the **** headline.

Of course we have to have waman issues. Any NASA director who prioritizes putting a woman in command over the mission should be fired. No question if it had been

And finally, where are the no-spill cups? Wtf are they doing with reg cups in mission control and on the moon base?! No **** way that would happen.

If you're looking for hard sci-fi, this is not the series for you. There is a much stronger focus on interpersonal relationships and how they fare both in close quarters, and at great distances. Be prepared to suffer through the flashbacks into each character's history, which are honestly not that compelling. But there are some truly heartwarming moments.

I was surprised when I came here and saw the mediocre ratings from the critics and users alike. I found Away to be very solid. A very interesting story that's both, at times, gripping and moving. I thought the acting and writing were excellent. I definitely recommend watching it.

I played this show the moment it appeared on Netflix because I love sci-fi and anything about space, so I went in expecting to watch some kind of run-of-the-mill sci-fi thriller that we are all used to, what I got was a family drama - not a genre I usually watch, but I really enjoyed this show. It's well acted, thought provoking and emotional and somehow still managed to scratch my sci-fi itch. A great show and i really hope they make another season. The only criticism I would make is that the emotional messages between some of the characters did take up a lot of time in many of the episodes, and at points it started to feel a little tiresome and repetitive - but this only lessened my enjoyment a little during a couple of episodes. Actually liked this series. Took a chance on it ...pleasantly surprised. Swank does superlative work here and the human interest issues were paramount. Almost made me wish we were back in the space race. The rest of the cast also. Recommend highly.

Quite moving. A very human drama. So much personal tension, concern, relief, and celebration

Found myself remembering Grey's Anatomy. Yes, it's Grey's Anatomy in space, which makes Away an even worst watch than the other show about doctors lecturing each other around.

Although “Away” is ostensibly about humanity’s first expedition to Mars, that’s merely the spectacular setting for a drama that’s really about more intimate and universal themes: family, ambition, faith, hope, and our shared humanity. The production values are eye popping, but it’s the complexity of the script that makes the series stand out. Again and again the show turns away from clichés and easy answers, choosing instead a more challenging but ultimately more satisfying alternative. The filmmakers believe in the material enough to let it breathe, without filling every frame with noise and urgency. Instead, every scene feels intimate, and by the end of the first ten episodes, you genuinely care about every character.

On many occasions I was reminded of the movie “Arrival,” with its complex themes, stunning visuals, and subtle musical score. Both ask more of their audience than most dramas, but also deliver more in return. I can’t wait for season 2.

This series shows that the writers can take holidays too

Some absurd scenes taken just for the love of a picture that would look good on instagram have the feeling of the the last selfies of an influencer who fell from a cliff

Stay Away. This is not about space. It is dishonest to promote this as being about the future of space travel. They could have simply locked these people in a room without cell phones.

It’s hard to believe after watching two shows that any NASA executive or psychological professional would allow this group to be together on a three year mission. Let’s hope it gets better

Unfortunately, Away doesn’t deliver on its promise. The show’s formula reveals itself within the first couple of episodes, only to be endlessly repeated.

"Away" should be much better than it is, squandering a fascinating subject on pedestrian family drama.

Space is more of a backdrop for Away’s actual drama, which is about smart, ambitious people getting in each other’s way, and their own, and whether keeping your feet on the ground might not be the better decision.
